My son, a HS sophomore, received an invite yesterday to try out for the Area Code Games. Does anyone know about this event? What are the tryouts like? Is it something he should attend?

I'm not familiar, but know where you might get more info. Go to the enclosed link, which is a NJ High School baseball forum, and post your question. One guy in particular, Pangrande, is an ex pro player and now an expert on NJ HS baseball and helps place players in colleges and gives free advice. I've followed this fourm for years as I am big NJ HS baseball fan. Good luck.

Yes he should 100% attend. Every big time school will be there, even Rutgers. It isn't a big deal if he doesn't make the area code team. It's just like a combine where he will take a few cuts, fun a 60 yard dash, or if he is a pitcher, throw like 10-15 pitches.

Getting an invite to the Area Code Games is a big deal. He should absolutely go with the idea that he will receive nice exposure and will be able to compare himself to other kids. That will provide him with a nice basis for understanding at what collegiate level he can potentially play. Another showcase to consider is HeadFirst. If he is a strong academic kid this showcase is excellent. Most of the Ivys, plus schools like Virginia, Duke, Maryland all attend. If he is a top tier student and a D3 prospect, all the great academic schools like Hopkins, Amherst, Williams etc...are there.

Should also consider a Perfect Game Showcase. You will compete against some of the best HS players in the country (although there are lower level players as well). Finally, if you desire to spring for the cost of going to California, Stanford has a premier showcase that tons of college coaches attend from all over the country. You have to go on the Stanford website to select the right one and it is by lottery only. Best to do it between junior and senior year of HS. Good luck on the journey.

Thumb thru any Baseball America publication and you'll find numerous references to the AC Games. The previous posters recommending he go are spot on

Bdodger post is spot on. What you can expect if your a position player is to run the 60 (starting position is like taking a lead from first base) then outfielders generally make throws from right field to third base, and infielders make throws from shortstop to first base, and catchers make throws to second base like a players stealing (POP time). After they tested your speed and arm, they will have you hit BP. The pitchers at these combines tend to wait around and then throw a bullpen session that is on the gun usually after the position players have run and thrown. They might cut down some players and then have the remaining players hit live from the remaining pitchers. The Area Code Games are a big deal though. I think this area you play for the Yankee scouts like Matt Hyde and Cesar Presbott
