OT: Intriguing proposal to fix the way many basketball games end

I've heard of that. The counter-argument is that the fouling will just start earlier, before the game clock is shut off.

My fix would be much simpler: Mandatory 5 second runoff for all fouls. 10 seconds for all intentional fouls.

I really like the Elam ending. Of course, I'd vote for having to win by 2-3 points once you reach the target score or first to 7-10 past the target score. Essentially OT for closer games and how we still typically play, e.g., to "15 by 2 or 21 straight".

Two minutes to go:

Each team can only use one timeout.

Each foul is two shots and the ball.

I have thought about the 2 shots and the ball suggestion before, and I think that is a good suggestion..... it would really kill the idea of fouling late when behind....

as a sidenote, I think it was Jim Valvano that took extending the game to a new level, when coaching at NC state.... at least some "credited" him with it

I like this idea. Simple but brilliant.

the Jim Valvano ending is what we have now. It's such a weird quirk of basketball that you don't have in other sports. I think as someone else said the fouling will just start earlier and then really ruin the game. What if fouls counted double in the last 3 mins.

The fact that less of 1% of the teams actually win by using this method to me means that there needs to be a fix. If it was 10% or something I'd say there is a chance so keep the rules, but less than 1%. That's just torturing the fans for the inevitable.

This isn't a bad idea....

I actually think the OLD rules for basketball really work in the spirit of the game. So

-get rid of the one and one at 7 fouls and 2 foul shots at 10 fouls
-keep the rule that you keep possession if there is a foul and the shot clock resets on the foul when under 7 team fouls
-when you get to 7 team fouls in a half....you get ONE foul shot. And the ball back with a fresh shot clock inbounding at half court

This way, the only way you can actually make points up is actually earning the possession of the basketball by stopping the other team with possession of the ball. You can't earn possession of the ball by making a negative play....

not sure it would work. If it is a high scoring game (say 90-85) with 4 mins to go 7 point may not be a big deal. If it is a low scoring game 40-33 than 7 point may take 20 mins of game time. It probably should be 10% of the higher scoring team's score.

The argument that fouling will start earlier is valid.

Probably better for under 2 mins:
- all fouls are 2 shots
- if the team fouls surpasses 15 then it is 3 shots
with extra foul shots even a bad foul shooting player should be able to make 2 of 3 iff fouled at the end which would make it harder for the team that is down to come back with made shots.

Even with the proposed concept, teams can still attempt to foul. Even though there is a final score to achieve, teams can try to trade a foul (0-2 points) for a chance at 2-3 points. Overall the game will be quicker as there is a final score to hit. I'm up for anything to speed up the end of the games as long as it doesn't involve a foul shooting contest (until we get better at them at least).

Allow team under two minutes the option of free inbounds on any non shooting foul when in the bonus. The shot clock would be reset. The defense most remain on the defensive half of the court until the ball is put into play.
