He was an official at 444 NFL games, starting in 1960 as a field judge and became as a referee in 1966.He remains the only referee for two consecutive Super Bowls,11 and 12.
His last game as a field judge was the 1965 divisional playoff game between the Colts and the Packers that resulted in the NFL raising the goal posts by 10 feet because of a late in the 4th quarter attempted FG by the Packers' Don Chandler appeared to go wide above the left upright,so much so that Chandler began walking off of the field shaking his head, thinking that the Packers were done for 1965.
However,Tunney judged the kick to be good, causing an uproar and sending the game into OT resulting in a Packers' win-on a undisputed Chandler FG-and a subsequent NFL title.
Tunney also had some splanin' to do after he allowed the 1988 Divisional Playoff Game between the Bears and the Eagles to continue after the fog rolling in from Lake Michigan made the game impossible to see from the stands but visible to the those on the field. The on field cameras were able to follow the ball so Tunney decided to keep it going.Portions of the telecast are available on YT.
Despite these two incidents,he was regarded as a top ranked official overall.
