My daughter is a recent graduate of UK. I coached, officiated and have been a basketball fan my whole life. IMHO Calipari is a shining example of everything that is wrong with college sports today.
Below is taken from an old article from the Bleacher Report (2010) which named "Coach Cal" the #4 "scummiest college basketball coach" in NCAA history.
If I was ever blessed with a son who could play at the level Calipari would be one of the last guys I'd want him with.

  1. Coach Calipari’s list of indiscretions is long and illustrious. In fact, his rap sheet is so damning that it’s amazing the NCAA still allows him to coach. The Final Four berths he earned while coaching UMass were vacated when it was learned Marcus Camby had illegally received payments.

Calipari took a job with the New Jersey Nets before returning to the college ranks to coach Memphis. There, Calipari would have an entire season voided after violations surfaced that Derrick Rose had cheated on his SAT’s and that Rose’s brother had travel expenses paid for by the school.

How is that type of condemning behavior punished? With an eight-year, $31.65 million contract at Kentucky.

Already Calipari has created controversy for the Wildcats, with the NCAA investigating Eric Bledsoe about academic fraud. He’s an embarrassment to the values that the NCAA is supposed to stand for, and should have been placed on probation years ago.

I'm interested in how ESPN portrays him.

He got Lou Roe into UMass. Bob could not get him into Rutgers. The admissions folks looked at his transcript from Atlantic City HS and said "are you kidding?"

The Camby saga is well documented.

He did it. Did he do it the right way?

If you separate the coaching kids aspect away from the "business" of college basketball, Cal is a hell of a coach. In game he is meh, but his ability to get Uber talented kids to play hard and together at the highest level is pretty remarkable. Yeah he has a ton of talent to work with, but most coaches can't get talent to work with talent, especially one and dones that want to showcase their skills.

Heres my question. Calipari was in NJ with the nets, and then philly with the 76ers and had always been an east coast guy. So why the **** didnt we offer him the job after the nets canned him and when he went to the 76ers and canned o'bannon? ****

Calipari would have had us on probation in less than a year. But he's at Kentucky and the NCAA doesn't care what Kentucky does.

Anyone expecting the NCAA to actually do anything significant when dealing with things like this is just kidding themselves. Winning just seems to trump anything that is bad in college sports.
I put the NCAA in the same category of other organizations that have failed miserably in their missions like the UN and the International Olympic Comm.

RU would never hire anyone like Calipari
You think the faculty is agreeable to our current athletic policies?
Cal type would create a revolution.

Would rather we retain an ethical posture.

"the values that the NCAA is SUPPOSED to stand for"....The NCAA is a business and Cal is just playing the game. I respect his honesty with these guys. Cal genuinely seems to enjoy the process of taking guys from varied backgrounds and helping them achieve their realistic dreams of acquiring generational wealth. The trail left at the various schools is not pretty, but his ex-players seem to love him and have had great success.

I guess that's one way to look at it.

You are kidding right?

In 1989 the NCAA put UK on probation for three years for recruiting and academic violations, and took the unusual step of banning one Kentucky player, Eric Manuel, from NCAA competition on any level. Another player, Chris Mills, was barred from playing at Kentucky. They received a two year post season ban and a one year TV ban. They were also limited to adding three scholarship players for two consecutive years.

They had a point shaving scandal that rocked college basketball in the 1950’s, in fact Kentucky would cancel their 1952-53 season.

Btw, at no point was the University of Kentucky under investigation by the NCAA in the Eric Bledsoe situation. In fact,
an independent investigation into the high school transcript of Bledsoe found no direct evidence to support allegations of academic fraud.

Even if it did, I don't see how that's Coach Cal's fault. That happened before the kid even came to UK and he was cleared by the NCAA Eligibility Center (just like Rose was). These coaches aren't allowed to go to their player's classes to make sure they attend class, how are they supposed to know if someone is doing some shenanigans with a kid's transcript when he is in HS?

If Cal wanted to Coach at my alma mater, I would happily help the current head coach pack and help Cal unpack when he arrived.

Me too. I would personally drive him from Lexington to Piscataway.

Calipari aside, what about that Ref Wirtz who called an "outside the coaching box" technical agianst Calipari in the Final Four in the last few minutes of a TWO POINT GAME. From the other end of the court. Watch the violation and tell me you wouldn't check the Ref's bank account.

Laughable call

Kentucky is one of those programs that will never get investigated. So he can cheat there and the NCAA and everyone else looks the other way and protects the brand. Yeah, they get investigated if someone sends a recruit a boatload of cash in the mail aka Chris mills . But that's about it.

I would love cal to be our coach. Guy wins and that's all that matters at this level. Many Rutgers fans would rather to continue to stink.

Wrong. Kentucky has been hammered by the NCAA under Eddie Sutton. Russ's comments have all the details. The NCAA was very harsh with Kentucky.

Not me. I would like to keep a shred of my dignity. I'll stay with Pike and watch him build something the right way.

Maybe the dumbest thing I ever read here. What does your personal dignity have to do with a college basketball team? You know college basketball is one of the sleaziest thinfs there is.

My god man read my post ! I said that's the only time they get investigated . Another example of some imbecile not reading a post. So I am correct !

I don't want to continue to stink. I just never want a guy like that associated with RU.
This is the Coach Cal timeline.

1. Named head coach. Becomes the highest paid coach in RU history for any sport.
2. Brings in top level recruits by year 2 or 3.
3. In NCAA tournament no later than year 3.
4. RU advances to Sweet 16 by year 5.
5.NCAA begins investigation of RU basketball in year 6.
6. RU advance to Elite 8 in year 6.
7. NCAA sanctions RU basketball in year 7. Must vacate all NCAA wins in years 5 & 6.
Banned from NCAA tournament years 8 & 9.
8, Coach Cal leaves RU to and signs muti million dollar contract at (fill in the blank) University.

If you are willing to have the thrill of a phony NCAA run that will end up just being make believe then bring him in.

Yes, would love to have all those thrills. Myself and this fanbase is getting old. Would be great to actually have a fun team before I die.

You obviously haven't read a lot on this board. When I say "my" I'm referring to the university. Thanks for the eye opening statement re: college basketball. Doesn't mean that we (again meaning the University) have to go down there too.
Once again I'd rather win the right way.

The thing is we don't win. So let's just win anyway we can. As the great woody harreslon said "you'd rather look good and lose than look bad and win" Well, just want to win!

Sorry about that and I'm on the downslope of my life too. But still wouldn't want to do it that way.

I wouldn't mind having it go that way. I want to win. I don't care if the coach arranges payments, hookers and blow for the players. I just want to win.

For the holier than thou crowd: grow up. This is the shadiest of businesses. We lost any chance of dignity with guys like bannon and rice. Guys like Jordan, Fred hill and waters were not much better since we lost on the court, and in this game that's the greatest sin. You play college sports to win at this level. If we aren't ok with that then we need to drop down a level and out of the BIG.

Well I guess you told me!!!!
I have grown up and maybe you're right. If you have to win by running a program with the threat of sanctions hanging over your head all the time maybe we should drop down a notch. Or we could try to win by doing things the right way.
The "everyone else is doing it" excuse kind of ran it's course in second grade.

Seems the flood Princeton affair is soon forgotten.
The non- sports columnists would toast a coach with Calipari's background and methods.

Whatever happened to the back in the day scolding of " if Johnny jumped off the Albany street bridge would you?"

I don't buy the argument everyone else is doing it we should as well!

What drove alot of us crazy was the noise during the flood Julie era
No thanks!

NCAA Tourny by year 2. He can take 5 freshmen to the Sweet 16 even at Rutgers. By year 3 Rutgers has ribbon cutting ceremony for new luxury boxes. Year 4 Rutgers has ribbon cutting ceremony for new concourse surrounding the RAC. Rutgers fans get free cheese fries and pretzels to celebrate as a thank you from the Towers.

I am right. Let's make an analogy to real life now that you brought up the second grade "everyone else is doing it" argument. Let's say the "everyone else is doing it" way of life gets you a nice wife, family, job and big house. Doing things the other way gets you nowhere, working a crap job if you're lucky and you live in mommy's basement. You're the joke of the neighborhood. But yeah take solace that you did things the right way as everyone laughs at you and you go nowhere.
