OT: Lady GaGa to play Super Bowl halftime

Because it is not about football during halftime...it is not even about those at the stadium...it is about making the tv audience grow, beyond those who watch the game.

Yup - but if it's truly about expanding the TV audience they need to be more creative and cross multiple and diverse genres. As an example, why not have a popular country artist thrown in as well if it's really about mass appeal. I'm not the biggest country music fan but it's probably one of, if not the most popular genre in North America and quite so in other parts of the word too.

Country music gets the NFL every other game of the year.

While not necessarily a fan I also recognize that Lady Gaga is very talented and I will watch her halftime show. She is certainly a better pick than Katy Perry.

A few years ago the NFL said they would make the artists pay them to appear - did this really happen? That would explain Katy Perry. Acts like Swift or Zak Brown would not pay since they are already hugely popular.

Not sure why the hate for Katy Perry, but she is certainly on the same list in terms of popularity as Gaga et al. (sorry for the formatting). Swift is on a different level (150-170 million).

As others have mentioned she's a musician first, pop-star second. Her acoustic stuff is off the charts good. Also, while some tunes are catchy in that poppy way, her music is not my cup of tea. But I respect talent and I respect her.

Anyone who is a Maiden fan AND a pop diva is OK in my book.

SB is pop event at this point anyway, it just so happens that there is also a football game going on. So, she's as qualified as anyone. Still think Prince, in the rain with his hot twinz backups, was the best halftime show ever.

My dream show, super bowl or otherwise:
Plant
Page
Jones
Bonham (Jason)

Super Bowl Football Games and Super Bowl Half Time Shows risk becoming virtually incompatible.

The Super Bowl halftime is stated to be planned to last 30 minutes, while the usual NFL halftime is scheduled as a 12-minute break - - so they are already messing with some of the rhythm of the game .... plus -

There is a relentless quest to produce more & more elaborate shows that have multiple highly complex aspects - all of which add up to longer & longer half times. Sooner or later there will be a time (worse than the power outage) where some enormously intricate / hastily configured portable stage unit snaps a drive shaft & it is stranded in the middle of the field for two hours - or - the monster contraption malfunctions - but crawls off the field while carving huge ruts & destroying the playing surface.

Not sure I see how this shows how little star power there is in the music industry.

She has a new album this month - the single was being blasted all over a CFB game I was watching a week ago. Heavily Bruce inspired, and apparently she has all kinds of love for Bruce.

Anyway, not my cup of tea, but she's still a huge star with number 1 albums. I gave up on Super Bowl halftime shows after Tom Petty, Bruce and The Who back to back to back, but this makes as much sense as anything.

OP still wants to see 80s retreads like Madonna, if I recall correctly .. talk about hasn't been relevant in 15+ years.

looks like her first single is going to flop

Over the top costumes, great voice, and an "out there" personality make this a great choice for the extravaganza the game has become. Maybe Tony Bennett will show up for the oldtimers.

That'd actually be pretty cool and wouldn't be too surprised. Transitions between high-energy, over-the-top songs and melodic duets could work well.

While not necessarily a fan I also recognize that Lady Gaga is very talented and I will watch her halftime show. She is certainly a better pick than Katy Perry. Over the years, between her touching tributes to Clarence Clemons when he passed, her work with Tony Bennet and her rendition of the national anthem, I have become a fan of her talent if not her own music.

As far as other who can do the show, they have hit most of the classic rock acts that have widespread popularity (as opposed to the Metallica, Foo Fighter types who, while deserving, may scare some viewers off due to the nature of the music). Other great choices would be Zak Brown Band or Taylor Swift. Both have crossover popularity and are great in concert.

A few years ago the NFL said they would make the artists pay them to appear - did this really happen? That would explain Katy Perry. Acts like Swift or Zak Brown would not pay since they are already hugely popular.

Katy Perry was the highest paid artist last year. She's way bigger than Zack Brown Band. Taylor and Perry are about the same but they both hate each other.

So basically you're a hater. At least say that in the OP.

I don't really care whether it's a hit or not, whether her album fails or soars. I can see why they chose her, though, and it's going to be a nice promo for her.

I got through about two paragraphs of that article, and it was the most poorly written steamer I've read in a while. Not a great source.

I found that statement puzzling as well. Not like Perry is some unknown act. Had to google Zak Brown Band.

How about a Taylor Swift - Katy Perry cat fight? Now that would be a half time show!

I feel like the real NFL audience and country music audience already overlap a lot.

oh I can post others. I dont question her talent, I question her relevance in longterm history. You can make fun all you want of old artists but they built up the pedigree to perform. GaGa to me is like Alanis Morrissette. Made a big splash initially and then declines with each release. I dont deny she has a loyal fanbase, so does Britney Spears. Now they seem to choose who will draw in the most teenagers and gays to watch the superbowl halftime and comment on social media

Umm, no duh. Guys like you, me, and probably most here will watch the game regardless. I've been to plenty of SB parties that were 1/2 filled with friends (yes some that were, *gasp*, female or gay or gay females) that were more interested in the commercials and half time. The SB is a pop culture event, has been for 30 years.
