OT: LSU loses entire basketball team to transfer portal, NBA Draft after Will Wade firing

This is what you call a complete rebuild
Matt Mahon is going to need to go after the players in the portal hot and heavy.
Losing the whole team seems like a disaster, but with the portal being a big part of recruiting now,
LSU might come out of this in fairly good shape if they make the portal work for them now and start recruiting HS talent for the 2023-24 season.

What penalties they get from the NCAA will be a drawback, but with roster filled with portal players LSU might survive while building a program to win in the future while being as competitive as possible while under NCAA sanctions using the portal to survive.

Not sure what sanctions are worse than, your entire roster transfers out. And you have no commitments. Isn't that enough of a death penalty ?

Now with NIL, u can get paid.
We see UNC, u don't need real classes.

So what are the infractions exactly?

Like I said they will be in better shape than us soon.

really like your thought on this.

OPPORTUNITY.. transfers will know they have no unmentioned competition and I expect th4e LSU boosters will deliver what is needed by rallying for the team (if they get footballl tickets oe benefits out of it).

L$U can throw far more money at the problem than RU can. This much is historical fact. It may not take them that long to at least be tournament worthy.

This may be true historically, but not the current reality.

LSU endowment $500 m
RU $2bn

LSU alumni 225k
RU 500k+

LSU students: 35k (28k undergrad)
RU 70k (50k undergrad)

LSU Athletics expense (2021): $131m
RU athletics expense(2021): $118m

Louisiana population: 4.6m
NJ : 9m

Median HHI Louisiana: $50k
NJ: $85k

LSU has plenty going for it, but it’s hard to argue we can’t “afford” to do anything for 5-10 student athletes that LSU (both as an institution and community) can.

Sure they can. They have more millionaire boosters with money to burn who want to live vicariously through the Tigers. It’s not the masses that pay for these types of things, but the few dedicated millionaire boosters.

The only real point is the existence of current deep-pocketed boosters and their willingness to shell out for college sports. Northeast states don't seem to produce those people. Maybe in many of those aggro states it is really US price support for farms that makes some wealthy enough to donate.. cost of living low too. So much of that earned by local Rutgers grads has to go into local government and exorbitant cost of living.

You're talking about a booster base that didn't even bat an eye ponying up the $17.5mm it took to part with Ed O a year and a half after an undefeated, national championship season.

I’m not doubting how dedicated the LSU fan base is- but football is a different animal.

In basketball, 2nd rd draft picks don’t necessarily make $1m/yr.

What would the “open market” pay a h.s. recruit? Maybe the top 10 guys get $1m? $500k? it would be a steep decline from there, but even in that scenario you could outfit a Fab5 because there’s effectively a “cap” on the labor market.

That kind of $$ is well within RU’s ability to raise. It’s a rounding error compared to infrastructure investments.
