OT: Mount Rushmore of NJ HS Basketball Players

I thought Brokaw slightly better skilled.
Perth Amboy had better players and beat NB several times.

Taylor may have had a little edge in competitive fire although both were high.

Taylor has great Genes. His brother Bruce played CB for the 49ers.
And younger brother Blake Taylor was also a damn good player for Perth Amboy.
I grew up down there and nobody outside of New Brunswick ever thought that Brokaw was as good as Brian Taylor.
Although Gary was one of the best ever in Middlesex county.
My South River Rams had a couple of pretty good basketball players back then as well...Joey Theismann and Drew Pearson....although those two went on to play a different sport in college and the pros.
As one of my buds used to say.......Brian Taylor was David Thompson before David Thompson.

Bobby Hurley outstanding high school player at St.Anthony and point guard for Duke NCAA Champions.

Cason started out at Long Beach State and played for Jerry Tarkanian, transferred to Rutgers. Died homeless with AIDS. Very sad story.
Cason never played for Tarkanian. Yes, he accepted scholarship but didn’t qualify. Went to San Jacinto junior college before coming to RU.

How did you know where i was from?

I hated Perth Amboy for beating my zebras in the county and state tourneys

Then i think VaTech but not sure he played there either. So tragic

My Dad also compared him to David Thompson.

Totally uncalled for. so the fk what.
If he were alive, or if I thought I was offending anyone, I would not say it

As most know here, I never insult any posters on the board, even if I strongly disagree
That is the way I conduct myself

I grew up with Les. (Pee wee)
I know the story, as Rubaseball78 does also

Les should not have graduated high school
Most EAst Rutherford people knew that

My father who coached in some capacity in NJ for over 40 years swears Brian Taylor of Perth Amboy is the greatest NJ player he has ever seen.
The best thing about Brian Taylor is that he got to play with Dr. J on the Nets before he started having knee problems. They played some of the most exciting, high flying basketball ever!

If I'm remembering this right, there was a county tournament game where Amboy was down all of its starters except for Brian Taylor. He scored 82 points in that game.

Accepted scholarship but never played there. Played San Jacinto JC then RU.
He was actually at Long Beach St, flunked out and went to Jacinto CC. Not sure if he ever saw the court at LBS but I remember an article about the backdoor payments he was getting from Tark. The story goes he was getting paid for turning the gym lights on and off.

Why announce it and call the man "dumb as a rock"?

Granted I could have been more delicate
I could have said he wasn't the best student growing up, etc

Around town, we all knew he was pushed through high school, not really able to pass
the courses

And, to actually go to a college with serious academics would be nearly impossible

In high school, Despite all that, I often thought I would trade my future for his, The potential for making huge money was there

He ended up dying pretty much homeless, drug addict, in the city

Les was a casual friend, we played babe Ruth bb together, I gave him rides occasionally if needed, etc

It was a shame, and maybe my original remark was a bit of anger about that wasted opportunity and wasted life

I meant to offend no one, sorry if it offended you
For me it was a bit personal

Brevin Knight was an incredible high school player.i saw him as a sophomore in Essex County Tournament and he was 2 gears faster than everyone on the court.

Shaheed Holloway (begrudgingly)

LaMar Greer was 1st player in NJ history to average a triple double in high school and was McDs AA

Mike Rosario was McDs AA

Paul Mulcahy was 2nd player in NJ to average a triple double in HS
