OT: My Top 10 List of Steakhouses

The chopped steak at Charlie Brown's is superb. :>)

Seriously, Sparks is #1 for me, somewhat for sentimental reasons, as that's the first high end steakhouse we took our son to, when he was about 9 and were on a mini-vacation in NYC. Since then we go there at least once a year.

Honestly most of the rest mentioned are all great and determining which is "best" is likely based on minor personal preferences (such as, I absolutely love the fries at Sparks). My other faves in no particular order are Smith & Wollensky's, Peter Lugar's, and Del Frisco's.

These list are most pure non-sense, since no one has eaten at every steakhouse and it is all a matter of taste.

That said...

Here are some nice NYC ones in random order:

Smith & Wollensky, New York
Peter Lugers Steakhouse
Ben and Jack's Steakhouse

Capital Grille has 51 locations Ruth Chris 136. I don't see how you would consider Wolfgang's a chain with only 2 locations. It is significantly more difficult to maintain consistency with 51 locations unless you cook and freeze everything in a central distributor. Otherwise you will most likely have a different experience in every location.
Wolfgang's has a few NYC locations and is also in Hawaii, Florida, and California.

My top 10 would have to include Sparks and Quality Meats in NYC, Gibsons and Chop House in Chicago,Charlie Palmers and SW (at the Winn) in LV, Bones and McKendricks in Atlanta. IMO Smith & Wollensky and Capital Grille are tremendously overpriced and overrated, best chain is Palm, and most underrated is Ruths Chris. For something a little different, there is an outragiously good Cuban place in Hoboken called La Isla that has amazing skirt steak.

My comment was a tongue-in-cheek jab at those who dismiss chains only because they are chains. But Wolfgang's has 12 locations spread over NY, NJ, Florida, California, Hawaii, Japan, and Korea. I also doubt they've stopped opening new locations.

(Also, you don't have to cook and freeze everything centrally to maintain consistency. You only need to have standards and quality controls in place, along with people properly knowledgeable to maintain the standards.)

I'll be at Wolfgangs tomorrow night. I have clients in town and they wanted to go to Luger's based on the name... I suggested Wolfgang's instead and promised a better meal.
I agree that Wolfgang's is #1. Old Homestead is very good, but not on the same level, (in my opinion). I think you pay more for location at Old Homestead being in the meatpacking trendy area.

Tavern on Rush in Chicago had one of the best steaks I've ever had.

I like Quality Meat uptown in NYC too. Don't love Striphouse.

Mark Joseph's, downtown NYC, horrible location, but actually very good steakhouse.

Favorites to date:
Peter Luger's
Smith & Wollensky
Morton's
Ruth's Chris
Quality Meats

I still need to try Wolfgang's, Frisco's & Capitol Grille

I see they open one in AC. The Houston location is OUTSTANDING.

Yeah, I miss the one in lower Manhattan. And the one in Houston was stellar. Frankly, I like the fact I could go to any of their properties or Mortons whenever I'm on the road and pretty much know I was going to get a quality meal. I never held the fact that they were a "chain" against them. I wasn't concerned with impressing anybody, but just getting good food. As far as the OP list, I haven't been to 1 through 4, can vouch for 5 through 9 and would replace 10 with any Morton's (of which there are if memory serves one in Hackensack, one in Princeton, one in midtown, one in the FIDi and a Mortons' Grille that just opened in lower Manhattan).

You guys are going to eat yourself into the grave. When you're carving up one of these massive hunks of meat, make sure you leave room for veggies and I don't mean potatoes!

If you like skirt steak (like me) a must try is La Cabanas in Jackson Heights, Queens. Not a bad stop before or after a Mets game.

I'm pretty surprised at how much some of you like Wolfgangs.

I've been to a few of their locations, in total at least 20 times for work. It's not bad, but I wouldn't say it's anything special.

Which ones do you prefer?

That's what the creamed spinach is for, obviously.

How can you leave out Tad's?

Seriously, I've been to the best steak houses in NYC (and concur with many opinions already noted)and elsewhere, but the best steak I've ever had was at a fish house off of I-15 in South Jordan, UT (my wife and I were traveling cross country) . I can't even remember the name of the place, I think it was the Fish Market. The waiter read off the list of nightly specials which included a bone-in rib eye. I asked about it (not the price) and he went on to say that , even tho they were a fish joint, they raised their own beef, yada yada. So, I ordered the steak It was incredibly good. I got the bill and the steak was $80. I didn't complain-it was that good.

Love Wolfgang's in Tribeca. Porterhouse for five, bacon app and seafood platter are out of this world. Can't eat like that all the time or you won't appreciate.

GO RU

I remember as a kid (early 1950's) when going to Snuffy's on Rt 22 for their steak served on a sizzling platter was considered a very big deal. How times and tastes have changed- in the steak world , for the better.

ShopRite has boneless sirlion on sale this week. Bought me some yesterday and cooked it for dinner on the grill with a little cajun seasoning.

Another vote for Peter Luger overhyped.

Think I had my best steak at Palm Too in nyc

Have to agree, Lugers is good but not my #1. Just not a huge porterhouse fan. RC shouldn't be on the list. Wolfgangs , Sparks , Del Friscos , Del Monicos , STK -Vegas was good.

Why don't you eat steak? Is liberal-ville making you soft? :)

Ha! No, I just hate it. Have never liked it, and still don't. Every now and then when I am at a fine steak house I will try a piece of my wife's or a friend, but nope. It ain't for me.

Luckily every great steakhouse typically has incredible seafood to match.

I've heard Ben Beson was the best in the city, but I never got to eat there before it closed. I'll vote for old homestead in A.C.

Another vote for Keen's. Great spot before a game. You can grab a quick bite at the bar - try the filet skewers with mashed potatoes. I love most everything there. Also think they have the best Cobb salad in the city - you can't have steak for lunch all the time

Maybe I overlooked it but I can't believe that Bobby Vann's in NYC is not on here. I think their filet is the best and I just got back from Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and had a great steak at The Old Homestead.

Keene's should be on that list. Friends and I have been doing a quarterly trip to different steakhouses for some time, and we all were happy to see that Keene's, even though it's been there forever, was still one of the tastiest. Try the mutton.

Agreed. Keene's is at the TOP of my list.

Agree on this. Keene's Chophouse is excellent.

Not a top 10, but Edward's in Jersey City was opened by the chef from Old Homestead. He quickly sold it but I recommend a stop if you're in Chilltown.

Wife and I ate at Steakhouse 85 a few months back. Wasn't bad but I'd rather save the money go to Lone Star. Better quality steak at SH85 but not $70-$80 better. LS's bone in rib eye is pretty damn good for $20-$25.

There is no Morton's in Princeton but there is a Ruth's Chris. There is a Morton's in Atlantic City and I believe there is one in Bergen County.

Haven't eaten since around lunch time yesterday and this thread is making me hungry.

Veggies aren't food. They're what food eats.
