OT: NJ pays more than the average American in electric bills - THOUGHTS?

As soon as I saw Swains face I knew it was falling on deaf ears. She runs one of the worst committee hearings I have ever seen. Anyone in her district needs to move on from her. Lots of dead wight on that committee. Auth is a dinasour as well so it’s both sides of the aisle.

I have a ~6000 sq ft house with 3 kids, an EV, a pool and a hot tub that runs year round. This last month is probably the lowest that I'll have given we werent running HVAC (no heating, no ac). It was still $250. This summer, with the cost spike, I anticipate $1,000 monthly bills.
Shit is getting more expensive all around. It's bullshit.

LOL. If you have the income & capital in NJ to pay for the taxes and upkeep on a 6K sq foot house (on top of probably $50K for Delbarton per year) I would think that you might be able to afford to install panels which would reduce if not eliminate your electric costs.

I had the same thing minus Delbarton. I looked into solar and couldn’t do it at my house. My pseg was over 1000 a month.

I didn’t watch the video because this is NJ so the simple answer as to why it’s more is because nj politicians are scumbags.

And I don’t know who was speaking but can we lose the hat and Put on a collared shirt? You aren’t speaking at the local boys club.

Its the scandalous "green grift monster."
The grift is parasitically inserted to fund green slime money laundering
In NY they put people into a green fund that made people's bills go up a third.
People could opt-out but most never even knew they were put in program to start.
This stuff is an ambush basically - greatest con in history

AI just told me that the Average Electric bill for NJ Residents is `$185 and the National Average is ~$140. Seems that the guy might have some questionable facts.
That seems about right - we pay about $180/mo or $2160/yr, so how anyone could be paying $8100/yr more in NJ for electric than anyone is just silly, since very few in NJ are paying $8100/yr to begin with.

And as an aside, I actually watched the video and the guy says that New Jerseyans pay $8100 more per year on TOTAL BILLS than the avg American, not electric bills and that is possible, given our high taxes and cost of living, but then again, we get to live in the best state in the union, NJ, so good things cost more. In addition, the speaker never really says how much more we pay in electric bills than the average, although the $45/month above seems reasonable. The speaker did talk about $344MM in energy programs in the State, which is about $35 per person - maybe that's where the $45/month comes from, but it's certainly not clear from the speaker. Seems like a tempest in a teapot to me

We were quoted $53,000 for a solar system. Not worth the ROI last year.

Winter - We keep the heat at 72 during the day and 63 at night

Summer - AC at 68 consistenly

Our unit is 30+ years old, not exactly known for energy efficiency, and we have very high ceilings

FWIW, our 12 month bill comes nowhere 8,100

Depending on the system and if it can carry your total electric usage as well as also provide extra for credits back.... if you are spending up to to $1000 per month the payback on a $53K system might be less than 7 years. Might be worth it.

No one has a problem with taxing out electric and hundreds of millions of dollars being raised through government for pet projects (more than likely fat and inefficient ones)?
Windfarms are the biggest scam since Xanadu, untold 100's of millions with some estimates already over a billion spent for practically little. No one asked for it, yet we're going to pay for it. Even if the offshore windfarms get built, NJ homeowner's electric bills are going to increase substantially to keep this boondoggle a float. First Zoffinger's Folly, now Murphy's.

Haha thought the same thing.

Not sure why someone would need a 6,000 sqft house.

But if they do, I wouldn’t feel bad for their utility bills.
I hate touring those houses with home buyers. Tons of dead and wasted space. 400 sqft master bedroom that you can do cart wheels in. Living room with 20' ceilings 400 sqft with just dead space because you can only buy so big of a couch. Never been a fan of them.

Haha yea I don’t get it.

I don’t ever see the need for a house bigger than maybe 3000 sqft.

Instead of dumping money into wasted space I would be putting it towards a vacation house, travel or investing it to retire early.

Years ago was a party at huge house in Warren with beautiful curb appeal and facade.Kitchen cabinets were lowest builder grade- stapled drawer sides. Rumson had some real winners too-the HVAC systems in some of the nicer homes looked like it was done by blind contractors.

I had a client who began as a cable news producer for CNN and eventually was president of several major entertainment networks. As he got bigger jobs he got bigger homes. When he got the 6000 Sq home he realized the family spent all their time in the same small rooms (family room etc). His next house in LA was smaller and nicer. I read about these ego mansions with 100 rooms and those always seem to fall to a curse of some kind. Never build a palace for self - the universe will get you

Shiny outside, looks fancy inside, but the bones are crap. Builders make out..$$$$

We will be seeing higher electric bills starting in June.

'Dear Valued Customer:
Today the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities approved the results of the 2025 Basic Generation Service auction, which establishes electric supply prices for New Jersey’s four electric utilities. These auction results determine updated electric supply charges for New Jersey customers.
As a result of the auction, the supply portion of the bill for PSE&G residential electric customers will increase on June 1, 2025. The increase is being driven by a few factors. An increase in energy demand combined with the need for new power generation has driven higher supply prices. Utilities do not earn a profit on the electric supply; these costs are passed through directly to customers.'

I pay about $3,000 to $3,500 annually here in Texas (two story house, dual AC units, 3500 sq/ft). And that's with my air conditioning running 24/7 for half the year.

I get those notices from JCPL about energy use by efficient homes vs avg vs me. I’m like double what the avg homes of my size and I’m around 4K annually.
