OT: Official, Bell to Maryland

I just don't get it why can't we keep them here. It's so frustrating watching kids like this choose going to schools like Maryland over us and we are the only D1 program in NJ.

Bell lives 101 miles from Piscataway, 130 miles from College Park, MD. So neither school is "in the neighborhood," so to speak.

Fence the garden right he is in the fence line we should do what we can to keep him. That's all I am saying. He lives in NJ and we want to keep NJ kids here if we want
To succeed. It's frustrating watching most of the top talent leave but it really sucks when they go to schools like Maryland over us.

I guess Grandma liked Maryland more than Rutgers. At least we still get her 33 cents a year in taxes towards RU athletics.:) That is of course if Under Armour didn't decide she needed to be closer to her Grandson.

Until we can show we can win most of these top players will not come. It's up to Rutgers to prove they are trending the right way. So we will have to win with the 3 stars we have and some of the 4 stars. Ash is building that foundation so one day we will get more of the top in state players.

It's going to be a struggle just to compete for 4th place in the division if UMD keeps recruiting like this.

Ridiculous statement.
Then all the South Jersey kids should not be going to State College but rather to Piscataway.
Need to connect better with Recruits/ HS Coaches and build pride in their State University.

Is it really one hundred miles to Piscataway from his home? Even though the distance are similar the traffic is much worse on 95 in Maryland.

We got Fogg. They get Bell. These things happen. It works both ways.

Fogg is from New Jersey. He to moved to Maryland and now wants to come back home.

Maryland has all the Under Armour stuff and crazy uniforms that the kids like.

The state of NJ has breaded a culture where leaving home and going away to college is the norm… especially for the fortunate and affluent who can afford small private collages.

It seems except for a small percentage, our elite high school players with multiple options fit into that same category.

It sucks, but in this state getting away from your parents and starting new is attractive and a tough cycle to break…a lot of our best players on the 2006 team we're not from NJ.

We need our own under armour types company ,as far as contributing to our athletic programs who are more than willing to invest into the future.

This was a kid RU led for for awhile. Dont know why, with alot of his close friends allready in the RU class, that he started to lean to Maryland? If staff wants to win B10 games, and attract other big time in state recruits, this is the type of kid you need to land. Staff full of out of state coaches ,still learning the quirks of NJ hs Football. Maryland new Coach Durkin hired a local DC /Maryland guy to recruit as an asst when first hired and its paying off big time for Terps.

I for one don't think we need to rely on NJ players. We need to pull about 10 and the rest nationally. We start winning the NJ guys will chomp at the bit to get a schollie offer

Will be real hard to win in the B1G without the blue chip players from NJ/NY Metro area.
Trying to bring in 3 star recruits that don't have a lot of interest from the better programs will be a difficult path for RU.

and the Rutgers current ranking:

Greeny, for any sustained success we need to rely on NJ's best high school players…there's no way around it.
They will not come here sold on an idea to turn the program around, kids like Minkah Fitzpatrick and Rashan Gary want to play with other great players in a winning program…period.
You hit the nail on the head in true chicken/egg fashion…we start winning, the best will come.

Bell was impressed with the great OOC Maryland played last year. Yes being sarcastic.

You're being sarcastic but the weak OOC schedule led to a bowl game appearance, and who knows if he would have considered us without it. That's pure speculation, but it could have factored in for sure.

Zap pull them from other areas of the country that actually sees RU as a great University that offers great opportunity. We start winning and watch how fast the NJ guys will want to jump on. Unfortunately this area has got to be the most pessimistic spot in the country. People see greener pastures elsewhere but at the end of the day most want to come back.

We offer it all
The beach
The country
The mountains
All 4 seasons
Etc....
This state is great the only downside are the
Property taxes
The corruption
And all the various BS taxes now thrown our way

I'm not at all slamming anyone, but tone can be difficult to read, so I'm saying that first. It's obvious to me that most of you saying "he's from NJ and should have pride in his state University" are clearly from the northern half of the state and don't have a good sense of South Jersey mentality. Kids down there don't care about Rutgers. They aren't watching their games. They root for Temple, Penn state, Maryland, and the Big 5 basketball schools. They prefer a Delaware education to Rutgers. For too many years, Rutgers ignored everything south of Hamilton. Many of you constantly turn your noses up at South Jersey and Philadelphia-centric culture. Kids down there have a similar distrust for North jersey and New York. It will take years of winning before Rutgers football is any more than a punchline in South Jersey. That's just the way it's always been down there.

Rutgers needs to go on a campaign and push an Identity

We are one of the greatest universities on the WORLD yet the people of NJ don't even know the gem they have in their own back yard.

My understanding is that Bell cooled on us because of our on-the-field performance this past year.

And honestly how can you blame him?

We knew there would be kids affected by how we performed on the field. He was one of them. I am just tickled pink that it's a much smaller number than I expected.

What other areas of the country sees RU as a great university that offers great opportunity? To be honest, most places I've been to, RU doesn't register on anyone's radar. RU may have a lot to offer, but few people around the country know or care about it.

No offense but high school kids looking to go D1 care about a lot more than the seasons and access to the mountains/country.

This is just flat out wrong.

I've worked in numerous states...ru is highly regarded

For other kids, sure

But I don't think we lost him due to the quality of our recruiters vs theirs. That's not what I'm hearing anyway.

But i do get your point

I never said that RU is not highly regarded. I said the RU doesn't register on many people's radars, particularly when choosing a college.
