OT: Official, Bell to Maryland

I never said that RU is not highly regarded. I said the RU doesn't register on many people's radars, particularly when choosing a college.

You said more than that in your first sentence ;)

Maybe not your intent...but...

Rutgers has a higher percentage of in state kids than most large state schools in the area. It's their policy. They haven't really focused on out of staters. They should.

I was being sarcastic but you made a bowl game because your schedule was so weak. And at least you play Texas next year when the temp will probably be about 95 degrees.

Rutgers needs to go on a campaign and push an Identity

We are one of the greatest universities on the WORLD yet the people of NJ don't even know the gem they have in their own back yard.
Well here is the problem...if you were high on RU or any other school for that matter and you do not go there bas ed on on field performance and end up going somewhere where your not sold on but performed better you sold yourself out. I'm not saying RU was his school of choice but if by chance it was higher on the ladder than UM and he fit in better with the RU staff and team or OSU team than he sold himself out. That goes for any player. If it was a perfect science you wouldn't have hundreds of transfers every year

Maryland has recruited well this year, but part of their success is taking so many kids. Their class is now filled (or close to it). Rutgers, however, can probably take another 9-10 guys.

Mar. -- Ranked #14, with 29 kids, 5 four star, and a class average of 3.1

RU -- Ranked #26, with 20 kids, 3 four star, and a class average of 3.0

Given the context of our season -- 2-10 with 4 blowouts -- Ash & Co. has arguably done a better job in recruiting. Remember, Maryland lost their 5 star guy.

You know what I find amazing.
When I speak to sports fans around here who don't follow this program like we do, but keep an eye on it...they all say the same thing.

What's the matter with Rutgers football they ask me...always seemingly followed by, to bad Schiano left, he really had it going there.

I'm like, did you not see Fresno St, UNC and Cincinnati at home, or UCONN thrashing us with the Big East title in grasp? How about setting an NCAA sack record with no QB ....Collectively it's like, not really, I thought he turned the program around.

There's something about that guy, he was teflon and somehow his "stain" over shadowed his failures.

Am I the only one that here's that?

Perception is all that matters, and he helped bring the program to national relevancy for the first time in forever.

Have a couple of very casual RU fans in the building I work in, and have very short conversations with them once in a a while. The more recent one that came up was along the lines of "why did Rutgers fire Flood who was doing pretty well and go backwards with the current coach." The ones I run into who remember Schiano remember his 2 years at Tampa Bay more than what he did at RU--most don't even know he is DC at tOSU. It's a weird state when it comes to college sports--more fans of the big time programs like Notre Dame, Michigan, etc. than Rutgers, and that trickles down to the young kids.

Still can't get over when we visited Rumson-Fair Haven High School (our school district), one of the classrooms had a huge Penn State mural on the wall. I said to my wife that this does not seem to be the place for our kids. My older son opted for one of the vocational-technical schools.

Funny, I don't no one sport fan around here who gave a crap about GS in Tampa.

The people I talk to think he turned the program around.

Your experience is 100% different than mine.

You are probably tuned into a more sports-centric crowd in your circles and in Northern NJ.

My office is in Woodbridge, and we have a lot of commuters from Monmouth/Ocean County, where interest in Rutgers sports is very light to casual--the Flood comment exemplifies that-- a very superficial to nonexistent knowledge of what is happening with the program and current/past key players.

It gets worse as you travel further South in the state. I am ecstatic that we are making inroads at places like Timber Creek and Barnegat. Bell is even further South in Bridgeton.

Winning will expand the footprint and knowledge of casual fans.

Zap pull them from other areas of the country that actually sees RU as a great University that offers great opportunity. We start winning and watch how fast the NJ guys will want to jump on. Unfortunately this area has got to be the most pessimistic spot in the country. People see greener pastures elsewhere but at the end of the day most want to come back.

We offer it all
The beach
The country
The mountains
All 4 seasons
Etc....
This state is great the only downside are the
Property taxes
The corruption
And all the various BS taxes now thrown our way

The only way to pull legit talented players from other parts of the country is to have a staff that can recruit there ass off PERIOD if we recruit nationally we'll get players with the talent level of what Flood was bringing in
