What do people think of the path? I always thought of it as the step child of the port authority. I avoid it when I can
As someone who lives in Manhattan and works in Jersey City, I like PATH a lot.
With few exceptions it's cleaner, more timely, smoother, and has a better-behaving crowd on it than MTA subways (with the possible exception of Journal Square to Newark).
Save for stormy weather and occasional signal failures (which happen on every metro transit system in this region), the trains run on time per the posted schedule, give or take one minute. I time my desired trains near perfectly every day, whereas with MTA trains you could be waiting for 1-7 minutes with near-zero predictability in timing, and on many lettered lines have no display showing when the next one is arriving.
A PATH single-ride fare is the same price as the subway, and compared to other options a very cheap way to travel between NYC < - > NJ.
I probably wouldn't like it as much if I had to take trains in the same directions as rush hour crowds, but the current issue is more or less the system being at capacity during those hours, with no possibility of running trains any closer together. That will be partially alleviated by completion of CBTC / ATC system installation & testing over the next 2-3 years to allow less separation distance between trains safely, and furthermore there are plans to lengthen WTC-Newark trains (for starters) from 8 to 10 cars, once all corresponding station platforms can accommodate them.
