Playing Time

Three takes that I have that are not consensus and Pike at this point doesn't agree
1. Ogbole is our best option most nights against real teams at the 5. Only Merrimack game was this evident
2. JWill should have the ball in his hands more as almost the primary PG with Dylan spending a lot of time off the ball
3. Ace as a 18 year old right now is best as a center on this team
1. Ok
2. Absolutely insanity (top 5 lottery pick at pg and take the ball out of his hands for Jwill? Can not create or shoot or stay on his feet)
3. Ace is Durant 2.0 and will not bang at the 5 but you may be right it lengthens the lineup.

I want them playing 30-33 MPG and so does Pike. Most of their energy bar is going to (should be) depleted on the other end of the floor. I will admit I have been so far mildly disappointed with non Ace and Dylan new guys while Ace and Dylan have so far exceeded my expectations. Asking for more than 36 from them is a lot, especially if I am limiting minutes.

If I am the opposing coach I know with Hayes on the floor I can exploit Hayes on the offensive end.

And on the other end Hayes is a threat to exploit the defense (especially if it craters towards Ace/Dylan).
It goes both ways.

Except JMike and JWill haven't held up their end of the defensive margin while also not adding to the defense.

Guess who were 2 of the only 3 players to have a negative +/- a against Merrimack?
Hint - it wasn't Hayes.

You didn't answer:
How are you defending Ace, Dylan, JWill, JMike, Ogbole?

Harper guards JMike
Starks guards Dylan
Mason guards Ace
Smith guards JWill (big ask)
patrick guards Ogbole

It is going to be VERY interesting to see how "real" teams that have staffs to game plan and tools to defend would guard that lineup.

My 1st reaction is they aren't sending JaMike's (who is on the opposite side of the court) man to double team. That just doesn't happen.....but this isn't a normal situation.

Say you say screw it....send JaMike's man and double Ace. I don't think JaMike is that bad where a ball reversal quickly gets the ball in his hands and we can't exploit him being open or having defenders on the move and have JaMike able to get in to the lane and have options to pass to either Ace or Dylan.

Plus is sending JaMike's guy really going to disrupt a perimeter shot from Ace?

If you are defending Ace what worries you? To me his perimeter shot
Are you worried what happens if Ace penetrates? I am thinking not as much
Does sending an extra smaller guy at him reduce his effectiveness? Maybe not as much as you think

Haven’t you raised concerns about relying on 2 freshman as the season and Big Ten games wear on them?

Are you now expecting Ace and Dylan to score 60 every game?
Someone has to score and ease the pressure on them.

Tell me how you are designing a defense against this lineup:
Ace, Dylan, JWill, JMike and Ogbole

Now do it for:
Ace, Dylan, Martini, Hayes and Ogbole

As the opposing coach, what do you want on the floor?
I'm not sure either of those lineups are better than the other. Martini and Hayes don't shoot enough (although Martini has been more willing to get one up than I thought he would). They pretty much have to be standing still waiting for a pass to score. JWill and JMike, while not good shooters, and JWill has completely stopped shooting from outside, at least can put the ball on the court, draw defenders, and dish. Both lineups are different but not necessarily more effective than the other.

I know completely different team with different skillsets........

People seem to be quick to forget how good JWill was and what he meant for the team last year. He took a dead team and gave us fans hope.
