The Preakness will be run tomorrow (Saturday.) Post time is slated for 6:45pm ET. It will be televised on NBC - channel 4 in the NYC area.

The Derby winner Nyquist is the 3/5 morning line favorite. In 8 lifetime races, he has finished first every time. He drew post position 3. Exaggerator, who finished 2nd in the Derby with a fast close is listed as the 2nd choice at 3-1. But since the Preakness is a slightly shorter race (1 3/16 vs. 1 1/4) that closing speed may not be a factor. However, in 3 weeks, The Belmont is 20% longer than the Derby so if they're both competing then, the closing speed could be a factor.

Here is a free past performances page.

Stradaveri???? Nyquist just looks like the guy we all grew up with who was just a little bit better at everything. We would get close to him.in a race or any kind of competition but he just did not know how to lose. Will try a few exotics and see what shakes out.

Stradaveri???? ...
The thing about Stradivari that jumped out at me was the winning margins in his last two races - 11 lengths, then 14 lengths. But then I saw the class of those two races - Maiden then a 62K allowance. Both far cries from a Grade I Derby or Preakness.

Closers don't llike mud splattered in their face..Quist looks like a winner.
Wrong!
Exaggerator has won as a closer at least 2x, including the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby.
Doesn't mean he beats Nyquist, but he'll be coming on strong

Wrong? Who the hell are you? Nostrodamus ?This isn't a science . It is horse racing..Take it easy bud. We will see tomorrow. I hope I am wrong .We will all make more if
he spits the bit ..

Exaggerator loves the mud, which is a plus but, the Preakness course is historically too tight for closers. I expect Nyquist to win and Exaggerator to close for second. Now, the Belmont sets up for Exaggarator but you just never know at that distance.

Agree, although if I were Exaggerator's connections, I would have skipped the Preakness. Believe Nyquist is the best, but conditions, trip, & how the pace is plays such a big factor, that even a Secretariat type horse can be beaten.

In 1972,Bee Bee Bee kicked mud into Riva Ridge's face all the way through the stretch, holding off the Derby and future Belmont winner. My father and I had the winner. Is there an early speed mudder in this race?

Stradivari's last speed figure fits nicely here, but he's only run 3 times, and broke his maiden in an off-the-turfer. Not really encouraging progress from Pletcher who was short on bullets for the classics. I see Nyquist as much the best of this crop. If you agree, one way to make $$ is the $2M guaranteed pick 4. Starting with the 10th race, you can spend as little as 50 cents on the bet. I played a $40 P4 with 6 horses, for $240, and a $10 bet with 9 horses for $270, all with the 3 singled in the 13th race.

If you're just going to dabble, I'd key Nyquist in first or second with whoever else you like in the field. I like 3 / 5-7-11 or 5-7-11/3/5-7-11. Might be a better bet than an exacta unless you betting a few bucks. Derby triple wasn't bad at $ 173. Don't think a wet track will make a big difference for the favorites.

It's currently raining in Baltimore and will likely continue to rain all day. I'm just going to leave this here.

Brodo,

Can you believe it has been 27 years since the 89 Belmont. That was a great time. I will be betting against Nyqvist today.
Jimmy,
I've been to so many Belmonts, I had to google the 89 edition. Easy Goer denied Sunday Silence the triple crown. I believe I had picked that winner. (I had the winner in 9 of 17 Belmonts over the years.)

Not sure if true but I was told someone bet $80k on Stradivari. Nyquist no longer favorite

Tough day in Baltimore so far. Two horses "died" at Pimlico: Homeboykris collapse after winning Race 1; Pramedya was euthanized after an injury in Race 4.

Was just going to post that news. Unfortunate tragedy. I always cringe at the Kentucky derby at the start when 20 horses charge out of the gate and jockey for position.

I believe that the 80K bet was placed by the owners of Laurel Park? Whaaa?Do I smell a stewards inquiry? It will swing back to Nyquist but it may end up with an even money favorite..

Abiding Star 103 Beyer on sloppy track, using in exotics...

Easy Goer's win in '89 was the 2nd greatest Belmont performance of all time, IMO. Easy Goer was a great talent who finally realized his potential that day.

It was tied for the 2nd fastest time with AP Indy in 1992.

Plecher rarely places a horse in a situation he doesn't think he can win in. He has a punchers chance here but god Nyquist looks so good

creepy similarities about the horse that broke down. Same owners as Barbaro, who did same thing on Preakness day ten yrs ago. Should've been scratched after busting thru gate

Great point. AP Indy was a great horse in his own regard, the best from 1990 up until American Pharaoh, IMO. AP Indy was sired by Seattle Slew and his maternal grandsire was Secretariat. Blood lines don't get much better than that.

For some reason, AP Indy's Belmont made it into my long-term memory. He was the favorite (either even money or 2-1) breaking from the rail.

Secretariat didn't have great stud results, probably due to his oversized heart that was discovered during his autopsy. That abnormality helped him pump more blood (i.e. oxygen), but probably didn't carry over to his offspring.

They later found that the large heart gene typically skipped a generation, and was most likely to come from the mare's side. This certainly worked in AP Indy's favor. I feel that folks give an exaggerated (lol) importance to the extraordinary heart size that Secretariat was found to have during his autopsy, at least as far as endurance is concerned. An interesting piece of trivia is that the second largest heart that the famous vet who did Sec's autopsy ever saw was in Secretariat's chief rival, Sham, who finished a weary legged 45 lengths behind Sec in the Belmont.

Guess I may have a little Nostrodamus in me.
Some horses love mud & yes some of them are even closers, who apparently thrive with mud kicked in their faces.
