OT: Preakness Stakes

They later found that the large heart gene typically skipped a generation, and was most likely to come from the mare's side. This certainly worked in AP Indy's favor. I feel that folks give an exaggerated (lol) importance to the extraordinary heart size that Secretariat was found to have during his autopsy, at least as far as endurance is concerned. An interesting piece of trivia is that the second largest heart that the famous vet who did Sec's autopsy ever saw was in Secretariat's chief rival, Sham, who finished a weary legged 45 lengths behind Sec in the Belmont.
Sham made the mistake of trying to hang with Secretariat. He could only take that pace for about half the race.

Nice factoid about the large heart gene.

I believe that the 80K bet was placed by the owners of Laurel Park? Whaaa?Do I smell a stewards inquiry? It will swing back to Nyquist but it may end up with an even money favorite..
No that was not the owner of Laurel Park but the bet was placed at Laurel Park. And in time will be the future home of the Preakness. Both Laurel and Pimlico are owned by Stronach Racing who owns several other tracks including Gulfstream and Santa Anita.

Easy Goer was a great horse ....in NY. OVERATED!

Thrilled for the Desmoreaux brothers. Have know both for a long time. Kent was teary eyed. The man is a rock and it was great to see him win at his "home" track.

For horse racing fans today was a god send. First it would have been a disaster to have Nyquest could win the Triple Crown. This is one of the worst 3 year crops in recent memory. Today's results will get a big field into the Belmont with good odds and the rest of the 3 year olds will able to chase money all over the country this summer.

Exaggerator loves the mud, which is a plus but, the Preakness course is historically too tight for closers. I expect Nyquist to win and Exaggerator to close for second. Now, the Belmont sets up for Exaggarator but you just never know at that distance.
Actually, Pimlico is a great closer track. Of the three Triple Crown tracks it has the longest stretch run. The finish line is much further from the top of the stretch than the other two. The Belmont is the worst historically.

Actually... Pimlico is a 1 mile (8f) oval with a home stretch of 1,152 feet. Churchill Downs is a 1 mile (8f) oval with a home stretch of 1,234 feet. Belmont is a 1 1/2 mile oval (12f) with a home stretch of 1,097 feet.

I stand corrected. It looks like Churchill has moved their finish line during the makeover a few years back.

I love the Belmont. 1 1/2 and starts and finish in the same spot.

Kind of a strange looking race. Never saw a jockey take a horse (Nyquist) latterly so abruptly to get to the outside. It was like "OK lets go sideways for a bit"

Doug O'Neill just said now on the Dan Patrick Show that Nyquist came out of the Preakness in good shape and will be shipped later today or tomorrow to NY for the Belmont.

Weirdest ride I've ever seen. I'm no horse racing expert but isn't one of the strategies to beat a great horse is to have a speed horse wear him out so another horse can finish him in the end? It's like they fell for it, hook line and sinker.

I wonder if the two deaths earlier in the day had anything to do with it. It seemed like the jockey's mission was to keep Nyquist out of any traffic, even if it meant running with the speed horse and burning out and that weird lateral move you pointed out.

Nyquist did not go to Belmont last night, Will not run,,,,,and should not run. Nothing to gain by running in a 1 1/2 race

I understand from some articles about Nyquist being pulled from Belmont it was for health reasons.
He just got over a fever an article said and has a high white-blood cell count that's being treated and when healthy enough going back to California for rest.
Supposedly could run this summer at Saratoga, in either the Jim Dandy on July 30 or the Travers on Aug. 27. (according to)

He did have a slight fever, which isn't uncommon for horses after stretching out. The Derby winner has nothing to gain by running in the Belmont

Agree he has nothing to gain by running in the Belmont .
If he won the Preakness that would have been another story.

From what I understand he had a slight fever , it was treated then another fever popped up and was taken care of. Finding the high white-blood cell count happened while treating the second fever if I'm remembering it right.

There is no medical reason for him to back out with 3 weeks to go. But has zero to gain by running a 1 1/2 race

More than likely a better safe than sorry approach concerning Nyquist's health and like you said nothing to gain by running in the Belmont .

Without the Black Eyed Susans in tow, no reason but $$ to run his 3rd long race in 5 weeks. That $$ will easily be made up in the breeding shed. HOY honors won't be won this early in the season so it's best to wait. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he never ran again. As far as stud fees go, at this point racing more could probably hurt more than help.
