OT- quick traffic court question for tonight

Spanky, I think I remember that thread.I have seen people who show no indication of going into a cross walk at all who just sort of jump out into it. Many times, it would take slamming on the breaks in order to stop which is much more dangerous then anything else.

How does one tell how many points are on their driving record? I got a "following too closely" ticket in PA (I'm a NJ driver) and I assume most any traffic offense out of state is 2 points, based on what I was reading. I haven't taken a defensive driving course in a while (I think it's one every 3-5 years you can take). But how do I know how many points are on my license or when that accident gets put on?
Go to the NJ DMV web site they charge you like $20 for a report.

OP, So how did court go last night?

Try phoning the municipal court and asking who the prosecutor is and a phone number. Try phoning beforehand. Not sure it would work but worth a try.

LOL..I didn't know it would be quite the popular thread. After thinking thru all the great comments x-Tango's jerk reply (and I mean that and why I asked here).... we did call prior and did the math.

Court fees plus an extra couple of hundred extra bucks guaranteed vs, just pay the fine and see what the insurance is a year from now when it is due to be renewed. And by then the points will be close to coming off. 2 pts really isn't that big a deal. Otherwise clean record so we will see. Worst case a break even with deferred expense for her. Chance of no further increase over the $230 ticket if insurance let's it slide.

She decided to pay it online that afternoon and not bother going to court. (yes I am sure that her nerves played a part as well).

A bit anti-climatic for the story but I think a good decision.

(Here's the FanuSanu version: I was scared to death as a 58yo guy that I was unable to have a polite and professional chat with the prosecutor so I talked my daughter into bailing ..lol)... just having fun. I got your points but you have to trust I am not a dope. (most days)

Haha, yeah wasn't trying to talk down to you like an idiot, but I reckon I have more experience with such things than most here. I took the aforementioned defensive driving class not as a proactive measure or to save a little insurance but to prevent losing my license from accumulating too many points ... So let's just say I've stood in that prosecutor line a couple times : ).

Sounds like you went about it right ... There's something to be said for not spending 4 hours of your night in court over a pretty basic ticket.

Not sure if you understand that 2 points will remain on her insurance policy (they call them insurance eligibility points, IIRC) for 3 years. She will be assessed a surcharge on her policy every year for 3 years. This is different than the points she now has with the DMV or the surcharge the DMV charges you when you have 6 or more points.
