This is horrible news for a very nice and very cool Rutgers alum. Former WRSU DJ, DJ at The Melody, DJ and program director at the groundbreaking FM 106.3 WHTG, host of 120 Minutes on MTV. This sucks. He posted this on January 6, the day he had the stroke:

horrible news

something seems odd about the conservatorship request by his daughters and not telling his current girlfriend....well she has to know now

Matt Pinfield, the East Brunswick native who went from spinning in small Jersey nightclubs and local radio to become one of the most recognizable faces in the music world, suffered a stroke on Jan. 6 that has left him “incapacitated,” according to court documents.

Pinfield, 63, suffered the stroke in Los Angeles. He's stable but in “poor” physical health, incapable of making cognitive decisions or physical movement, according to a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court obtained by the Asbury Park Press. The petition was brought by his daughters, Jessica and Maya, requesting a temporary conservatorship.

The petition requests that Pinfield's girlfriend, Kara Brown, not be notified of the attempt to obtain conservatorship. Attempts to reach Brown and attorneys for the Pinfields were not successful.

Have known about the stroke for a bit, but friends of Matt's were asked to not post publicly about it, in part hoping that Matt might recover, enabling him to tell his own story, but that is in question now. Sad all around. Glad my wife and I got to hang with Matt at the last Melody Reunion in October - he spun an awesome set that night and we got to reminisce about the old days. Got to meet his girlfriend that night, but have no knowledge of the legal stuff.

Nice article by Chris Jordan, who has been doing great pieces about the CNJ music/arts scene for decades and posts here sometimes, iirc. @CJ1987

Was not aware of this latest set back, he's been dealing with health issues for so long, who knows what lingering affects all of this has had on his body. Hope he can win one more time. The legal stuff sounds like some unnecessary crap, considering what he is dealing with.

That is the same article I posted. It addresses the legal issue. His children want to prevent his girlfriend from having access to his money.

Unfortunately, the girlfriend doesn’t have any legal rights with respect to Pinfield.

It was cool to be in the same era and see him ascend from The Melody to WHTG to MTV. I didn't know him personally but appreciated him and his influence. He and the other WHTG DJs gave air play to local bands and that meant a lot.

WHTG was a very good station in its heyday and Matt was a big part of that. Sad news.
It was such a fantastic station. I remember when we moved from Monmouth County and we were in Randolph high on a hill, I was thrilled that with a great antenna, I was able to received FM106.3. This was, of course, pre-internet radio. Brookdale Community College's HD2 station Altrok has a very similar format, and it is commercial free. You can listen online or through many apps.

Here is a great documentary on WHTG.

The Brookdale station is great. That's funny about 106.3 FM. I was told that you could tune it in pretty good out in Staten Island.

Well, SI is closer to Eatontown than places like Hillsborough or Plainfield are. Living in NB/HP/P'way while in grad school that was close to the edge of where I'd get good reception of WHTG. I'd start to lose the station when driving once I reached about 287/78 to the NW or about Elizabeth along 95.

Was my favorite radio station ever. Listened to it a lot, became friends with a few of the DJs, through Matt (meeting at places like the Melody, the Green Parrot or in AP), and won a few things on air. I actually remember vividly the night in November 2000 when FM106.3 went off the air, so to speak, replaced by G106.3, kind of a contemporary-alternative station with all new DJs - nowhere near the same, sadly - rumors had been swirling for awhile, but it was sad when it finally happened.

Cool clip - hadn't seen that. Another artist created the painting, below, of the Melody bar, which now hangs in our living room by the pool table. Very good friends of ours won it at a silent auction they had (I think they outbid us, lol) at one of the reunions about 12 years ago and gave it to us as a gift, which was very cool. Should probably take a better pic of it...

How did you get your wife to go along with putting the pool table in the living room?
