The details are still being worked out, but the potential of this affiliation for the medical schools and medical related research is tremendous. Millions and millions of $$, increased prestige, increased patient population for the medical schools, increased research money, improvements to infrastructure are all likely.

Members of the Rutgers Community:
I am happy to announce that the University has entered into a formal collaboration with RWJBarnabas Health to create an academic health care system that will provide outstanding patient care, medical research, and medical education, strengthening health care across New Jersey. By joining with the state’s most comprehensive health care delivery system, we will be better able to recruit the very best academic and health care practitioners, deliver world-class health and medical education, and provide evidence-based health care.

This new venture brings together the RWJBarnabas health care system with Rutgers University and with Rutgers Health Group—our faculty practice of approximately 1,000 Rutgers-employed physicians, dentists, psychologists, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals. All of our Rutgers Health Group clinical activities—including those at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care—will be included. Combined with the providers of RWJBarnabas Health, the result will be a 2,500-member, multi-specialty group that will be among the largest in the United States.

As spelled out in the Letter of Intent that we have signed, RWJBarnabas Health will lead and manage all clinical operations in coordination with Rutgers, while Rutgers will lead and manage the academic research functions in coordination with RWJBarnabas Health. The organizations will remain separate corporations: Rutgers faculty will remain Rutgers faculty, and Rutgers will provide clinical services to RWJBarnabas Health through Rutgers Health Group. In addition, RWJBarnabas Health will provide financial support to Rutgers in our research and health-related education through the transfer of its education programs to the University.

I applaud the superb efforts of Brian Strom, Chancellor of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs. This agreement is the result of many months of exploration and negotiation with our partners at RWJBarnabas Health, and Chancellor Strom’s leadership, energy, and vision have been crucial to its development. Let me also thank Barry Ostrowsky, president and CEO of RWJBarnabas Health, for all he has done to make this possible.

This affiliation is great news for Rutgers, as it will create the premier academic health system in the state and will provide our students with outstanding clinical and research opportunities. RWJBarnabas Health’s commitment to funding research and educational expansion at Rutgers will enable us to become a nationally recognized leader in academic medicine and provide a vital advantage as we continue to compete for federal research dollars.

Entering into this collaboration will position Rutgers and RWJBarnabas Health well to develop new centers of excellence, excel in the preparation of world-class health care professionals, and improve the health of our fellow New Jersey residents. I can’t wait to get started.

The news release for this announcement is available here.
Sincerely,
Robert Barchi

I wish I knew more about how Trenton "giving" Rutgers UMDNJ (and its considerable debts and liabilities) figured into this announcement.

First things first. There need to be huge illuminated RED BLOCK R's on every affiliated building within the system. All hospitals burn centers clinical buildings etc...

Need to make sure the Rutgers Brand is everywhere in this deal and not taking a back seat.
The Block R is the athletics branding, the academic branding is either the shield or the seal. Would still be cool to see though.

Really? Never heard there was a separation. Then why was the Illuminated R on the dorm on George St? Pretty sure it is on all of the Student centers and on a couple of the Urban Planning and Mason Gross buildings downtown. University does not do a good enough job plastering that on all Rutgers buildings.

If true therein lies the problem. Can you imagine Michigan not embracing the M or Ohio State without the O.

So the RWJBarnabas-Rutgers partnership goes far beyond what we already had been celebrating. Too awesome on too many levels. So everything good that comes out of this will have Rutgers' name on it. That's some of the statewide PR we've been lacking, the kinds of things that force NJ residents who look down on public higher education to be reminded constantly of positive things associated with the Rutgers name.

The trickle-down effect of this is almost impossible to estimate, but it will be real, and it will be everywhere.

Just for a little devil's advocate here... what happens with RWJBarnabas gets criticized for not providing this service or that service, etc etc... Rutgers is now a potential target there.. and so is the Athletic budget... maybe if we spent less on sports, this service could be provided.. etc.

Here's one such story that Rutgers can now be dragged into

Yes.. it is good news.. and yet....

No question about it - this is a classic case of "the devil is in the details".

But we were also told: "While seeking close integration, the organizations will remain separate corporations; and Rutgers faculty will remain Rutgers faculty."

I remember seeing the dust fly when they demolished St Barnabas,on High St Newark,in the early Sixties.

The Block R is the athletics branding, the academic branding is either the shield or the seal. Would still be cool to see though.
And, that's the problem. Branding represents the totality of a company, not individual sections, departments, or individuals. Lets not make any mistake about it, Rutgers University is a company, a company that sells achievements. Regardless, if those achievements are educational or athletic, they perpetrate a competence of the company to deliver it's message. And, that message should always be precluded with the brand............. R

Would to love to see this one used (and I doubt we get many complaints if it happens)

But would also be okay with this one too...

Fire you couldn't be more wrong. The last time I looked into it all athletes are also students. 'Nuff said! Get a life. Things like this have been long overdue fir many years.

YES- While this trickle-down will be be "a process" & making progress will be one step at a time - it will be a powerful factor in step-by-step getting more & more people in NJ connected to RUTGERS - every time somebody's kid, spouse, parent, friend makes it through a horrific health crisis - every time a son or daughter, niece, nephew, grandchild is born - at a RUTGERS UNIVERSITY affiliated hospital - there will be a boost in credibility, admiration, respect, and some degree of fondness.

Here are a few examples of the Block R in a more academic (and less athletic) setting...

I know it's tough but try and read what's written on the base in the above pic. Nothing to do with sports.

Same with these.

Rutgers has adopted a strong visual identity system which includes the Block R as an athletics symbol (as well as the Knight head).
The R250 shield with or without the Rutgers typeface logo is the predominant logo apart from athletics.
The university seal is reserved for uber-important documents, including diplomas.

As far as signage and buildings: there is a detailed policy (attached).http://facilities.rutgers.edu/content/media-files/Signage_pps_1-32_15_0122_Rutgers_Manual_FULL.pdf

The Block R is not specific to athletics. It is the "spirit mark" for Rutgers. The shield is used in more formal applications. And the university seal is used in the most formal applications (like diplomas).

From http://identity.rutgers.edu/elements-system/spirit-mark

Spirit Mark
The Rutgers spirit mark (Block R) is an informal, bold, and energetic representation of Rutgers. It suggests pride and affinity.
spirit_mark_pg.gif

The spirit mark is separate and distinct from the more formal Rutgers logotype and signature system. It is less academically oriented than the Rutgers logotype and is therefore not universally appropriate. However, it does have myriad applications.

The spirit mark may be defined as the emblem for strong, emotive support given to Rutgers by students, alumni, and all those associated with Rutgers. The spirit mark may be used:

  1. in informal contexts, such as: athletics, alumni materials, school spirit activities, recruiting events, and on apparel and promotional items;
  2. as a graphic within academic departments to promote spirit and social events, as well as in recruitment and on various promotional materials.
The spirit mark may not be used:

  1. for official Rutgers communications, such as: official notification letters of admission, letters for hire, contracts, and grant proposals;
  2. as a lockup with the Rutgers logotype and signature system, nor may a new lockup or signature be created using the Block R;
  3. for formal business purposes.
The spirit mark may only be reproduced in red (Pantone® 186) or white; with or without a black, white, or red (Pantone® 186) outline. The spirit mark may never be reproduced in black.

You may request permission to use the spirit mark by contacting Trademark Licensing (848-445-1921 or 1951).

For athletics marks, see the Athletics Marks webpage.

Dr. and Mrs. Bauer might have requested it to look like this out front but here is an example of a Rutgers building with a Block R (and illuminated at that) on it...

Even if I didn't know who the Bauer family was, by looking at this pic I most certainly know where/what school this is.

So the option is to not do this because there may be a bump in the road in the future. If we always take the safest way you fall short in accomplishments.

I did some work at the U of Michigan hospital a few years ago and you could stand anywhere, turn around, and see 3 or 4 block Ms - they were EVERYWHERE!

Exactly my point. Walk into any academic building associated Hospital etc., on any campus across the country from UPenn to UMichigan to UCLA and they are branded appropriately.

This is a chance to brand Rutgers appropriately

The Block R looks a hellava lot better than this

You did read the "good news" part, yes?

Just saying.. it will be used as yet another angle to attack Rutgers independence... which is what the majority of the attacks in the media has been about. The usual cronies wanting to gain control of Rutgers budget... to control spending.. to give contracts to "friends and family"... like how most of New Jersey's institutions work.

All i want to know is will it help in recruiting for football and hoops??
Of course. Once a 4 or 5 star d-lineman like Friday hears about this they will be running to sign on the dotted line. I expect this announcement will lead to years of top ten classes.

Athletics won't receive 10 cents
That's what the B1G is for. Eventually funding for both athletics and academics could potentially get segregated, and the academic side will no longer be able to bitch and moan about how being in big-time sports is so bad for our university, and our athletic program at the same time will be getting levels of funding that its never seen before.

This also raises the image of Rutgers nationally from an academic standpoint as well, and probably will boost its rankings in USNews and other lists, which in turn helps the reputation of us alumni when looking for jobs.
