OT: South Carolina recruiting weekend

See linked article "Marcus Lattimore makes big impact on USC's recruiting weekend". It describes a recruiting weekend where Lattimore had a very large role. As far as I know, Lattimore is not on the football staff at South Carolina. Are there limitations on his participation? The article does point out that Lattimore is a "special assistant to the president". Is that a CYA position?
