OT: Strickland’s Steakhouse in Woodbridge

If you believe that was an actual review of the restaurant, I have a bridge to sell you. 100% pay to play. They've offered similar reviews / IG reels to a family members shop. There's value, but its bullshit. My favorite was the Keyport diner that was legitimately for sale for months before the SL declared it best in the state. It was a ghost town and on life support

Keyport Diner is excellent all around. A small place but great value with great food.

Sure, but it's no different than the vast majority of diners in NJ. Never would I (or anyone who has worked a day in hospitality) ever consider this this "best diner in NJ" $$$ talks.

The Star Ledger /NJ dot com is an abortion of a once proud paper. It's littered with pay to play articles, affiliate "listicyles" and more than 90 javascripts/trackers running on the backend.

Let's have fun for a minute here. The 4th article on their site is the best smokers you can buy in 2024., according to reviews. The subject line should be: These are the smokers that have the highest payout rate for us to promote on affiliate links.

Scroll down and here's more:
Sur La Table’s ‘Warehouse Sale’ has fan-favorite brands, like Le Creuset, KitchenAid and Zwilling, on sale up to 65% off
Revelry’s engagement party season outfits are giving ‘Cowboy Carter’ chic on a budget
The best portable grills to buy in 2024, according to reviews
Wayfair has this ultimate Blackstone griddle with an air fryer on sale for $200 off

All of these are "news" articles that are meant to do one thing only, generate revenue off of affiliate sales form nj dot com the the prospective ecomm site. And they're all listed as news. And its only gotten worse.

Let's tackle their javascripts/trackers now. If you're not browsing that site with a privacy browser, and or a plugin like Ghostery installed, you're data is being sold ruthlessly. Not just browsing behavior, Im talking PII, personally identifiable information and quite possibly your financial information as well.

There's presently 63+ advertising trackers built in on the back end of their site. These are not functional, these are meant to collect data on you to sell and market your information. It's gross and borderline unethical how much they have installed on their site.

They've also gotten more aggressive lately with their ad blocker detector, Admiral. This will in turn block you from viewing their site with js or ad blockers turned on. This is easily solved.

Their coding wizards left a pretty large access point that allows you to bypass their subscription or ad block gateway. Their Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) are all free and clear to everyone. Simply append this to the end of any nj dot com url.
?outputType=amp

I got tired of typing that so I coded out a Chrome extension that allows you to click a button to open the AMP page.

I unfort rely on their site for random news and some of their Rutgers content is really good. The Erasmus Hall and how we got in the B1G are two examples. I'd be happy to share that plugin w anyone who wants it.

Stop shaming the Bob name. I simply pointed out truths about a diner and a publication that we all know engages is unsavory practices. Do I have to lob more bob loblaw law bombs at you or are ok with just reading my law blog?
Yes we get … spent a great many years in the Food Industry… why did that matter to you? People make their own judgements on where to go or what restaurants are good or bad. Of course MSM and the NJ.com bloggers have their lists… those freebies they get for the mentions pay dividends.Like all else people don’t need others to tell them what, where or who they should support or where to eat. Most can figure it out . You’re not in court .

Are you ok now? Take a chill pill Mr. Food critic…lol.

You're right Bob. I'll just take a bone, throw it in some water and I got myself a stew baby.
Did you get hit with a Poppins today?

Still hit and miss and nowhere near the REO of 15-20 years ago. A burger?.French toast? And a vanilla shake? Can’t get much wrong with that list .
Is there anything else on the menu at diners besides those things? That’s all I ever get.

You’d be surprised how bad some diners can be with burgers, French toast, or milkshakes. Seems simple, but at some places, the burgers are thin, dry and tasteless (like my sense of humor). The French toast can be too eggy, too thin, lack flavor, and be dry too. And milkshakes can range from awful or great.

Anyway, I’m not supposed to be eating all that shit anymore. I asked the waitress for a note for my doctor, saying she made me eat that bad stuff when I tried to order a salad.

My acid reflux would be off the charts. I wouldn’t sleep for two days. How do you do it? 😂

If and when I order French Toast( I don’t) out I prefer the egg soaks the entire bread through … nothing worse than bread only coated and fried on the flat top only on the outside.

I don’t do that often anymore due to genetic blood sugar issues. But I don’t have indigestion issues often. And when I start to feel some acid buildup, I chew a couple/few alkaselzter chewable antacids. Has always worked for me, so far.

Acid reflux is horrrific though. The couple times I experienced it were enough to make me learn to sense it early enough to treat it before it gets really bad. Knock on wood. Ugh.

True that, true that.

I have a very small list of foods I order at any dinner.
I agree with your position but more and more diners are running specials and with variety. For many the Kenilworth diner is worth at least a try for breakfast and dinner . Actually, quality is very good and prices are fair by today’s costs. Don’t have to spend $ 100+ or more to have meal . A good steak is always nice. A good seafood dinner is always desired. Check out the daily listings … and standard Early Bird offerings. Even for this poor man it’s worth it.

You’re on ignore but he still sees your posts! More like an unofficial ignore where he just refuses to read or comment on your posts, except when you post something he feels compelled to comment on 😉
Dont worry about Bob. He puts from the muff, I mean rough.

@RUPete has mentioned this and I agree- Bob has some really solid posts on this board and the basketball board. When I see him opining on anything else, I just skip past it.

I actually have a fairly long ignore list. Mostly people who are trolls, or are constantly posting CE type stuff in nearly every thread.

I like when people tell another poster they are on ignore. This always comes to mind:

I find it difficult to mask my sorrow, but somehow, some way, I will survive and be stronger for it.

still haven't gotten to Wolfgangs/Somerville

anybody can compare to Ruth's Chris?

I've been to Wolfgangs, although not for a few years or so. Went when it was still fairly new.

It was good. Not Capital Grille (in DC) good. But still good.

I've been to a Ruth's Chris in a couple different states (geographic states, not altered states). Was fine each time, but not as good as Wolfgangs was the one time I was there.

IMO, Wolfgang's was also better than Peter Lugers which was good but didn't live up to the hype.

Any other Rails fans here?? I think the place is great but have friends who feel otherwise so it has me questioning my taste buds.

Totally tangential, but speaking of Somerville, I was at Alphonso's a few days back. Had a plain pizza (among other stuff).

Their pizza is just so damn tasty. It's amazingly good tasting. The crust is good but not great. But their pizzas is just somehow very different tasting and good.

Back on topic...

What is people's favorite cut of steak to order at these good steak-houses?

Food is like art - very personal and there's really no "good" or "bad". There's just what we like.

For example, @RU848789 really likes Star Tavern's pizza a lot. He raves about it. So a bunch of us went up there one time and I found it meh.

Wasn't awful or anything. But wasn't particularly noteworthy to me. I will have to try it again some day, perhaps it was just an off day.

And if you recall the other 6 people there thought it was amazing. You. Are. An. Outlier.

Nope. Not everyone did. The other newcomers, K&K, IIRC, were no more impressed than me.

I am an outlier, though. Just ask Malcolm Gladwell. 😀

Oh, and btw, YOU'RE WRONG!

No, K&K were the ones who recommended it - I had never been there before that. So, you're way wrong.

Star Tavern over the years has offered up a decent pie. I would suggest there are many equal to or far better. Star Tavern is place to get a cold drink and some good pub food. NJ has many great places for pizza but so does NY and Long Island.

Lose some weight… and don’t forget to get your colonoscopy if over 40 now the recommendation.
