OT: The death of boxing out

Probably not as bad in college as it is in the NBA (as per this video) but yeah, lack of boxing out is especially a problem for Rutgers.

We also don’t move our feet fast enough to the ball, even when we do box out.

Pike has to have everyone crashing the defensive boards.

If I were an opposing coach looking at RU on film, I’d tell my players, “We can outrebound these guys on the offensive glass, because they either don’t box out or are too slow going to the ball. So when our shot goes up, move your feet and get to the ball.”

It's such an easy thing to fix but the players just aren't getting it for some reason. It's the primary reason for all the losing but the guys just can't be bothered to focus on it.

It should be the ONLY thing discussed in practice until it is fixed. When a shot goes up, the ONLY thing that matters is getting the rebound. So damn simple. It's also the reason we got bounced from the NCAAs both times - giving up offensive rebounds in the last minute of games we were leading.

You have too many players trying to run rather than attacking the glass....its first thing I would fix if I were the coach in having everyone attack the glass. Who cares about running at this stage as we do have 2 of the best offensive weapons in the country who can break teams down in ISO half court.

Here's a fun drill I just made up.

5v5 run, 1 ball handler for each team. Ball hits rim, anyone that doesn't box out has to sit out the next possession.

So if two guys don't box out, the next offensive possession for that team would be a 5v3 on the other end. Don't want to box out? You don't get to play offense. Pretty simple concept.

Cliff never got it either and he was here 4 years, it has to be coaching.

One of the key essentials I learned when I first played on my junior high team back in the early '70's. As a player, if you didn't block out, you were benched.
As someone who never jumped well, boxing out was essential. My dad coached so i learned it earlyyyy

I play pick up now and people get annoyed and complain about matching up with me bc I box out too hard and it's annoying

Pike only used 12 scholarships and still has one open, so could you suit up for Monday since you box out? We could use someone who actually boxes out and gets boards 😂

Since college athletes get handsomely paid for participating in revenue generating sports.
The eligibility rules should be challenged in court….that will be next… Eligibility rules are preventing people from continued income.

Time for 10 year careers in college, or even switching back to college after an all star career in the NBA.

If AK is not NFL caliber, who are we to take away his livelihood, he should be our QB until someone beats him out.

The crazy part is that scholarships are already considered revenue sharing in theory. They are payouts by the school that need to be distributed with caps on them. Wonder when the schools fight back on those as well even though they help with limits of what teams can do in storing players on their bench and creating some parity across the landscape.

I am curious what it costs schools in general just to fund scholarships and the associated costs. If we get 13 scholarships per year for basketball and 85 for football and each schollie was valued at $100k we are paying out $1.3 and $8.5 million per year respectively. So the schools are already "revenue sharing" at this stage...now they have to payout more without any caps or regulation.

I agree with Zap, if I were the student or the school I would be questioning eligibility status/rules, challenging Title XI ins supporting all these additional sports, contract status of signing a player using NIL or whats actually binding, etc

Whole thing is a mess

Something interesting to ponder, why should the QB Michigan supposedly flipped for the whopping sum of around 10 million be on scholarship?
How about he pays his own tuition out of the 10 large…. Wouldn’t that make him a walk on and not count against your scholarship allotment?

Why are Dylan and Ace on scholarship?
Pay him and play him!
They can afford to pay their own tuition.

Sorry to high jack your thread Scangg😊
