The tote board was unable post the winning price for the third horse because the builders did not include a spot for such a rarity,causing consternation among those who had the 82-1 long shot who was listed third.The horse eventually paid 20-1 once the circuits were restored.It lead to three Daily Doubles,Exactas and Trifectas.Maybe they should have used AI.

I was watching the race live online. I don't understand the payouts for win. Do they combine the win pool and divide it. It should have paid 164.00. First time in 49 year history. The horse that finished 4th was a whisker away from a 4 horse dead heat.

2. Separate out all wagers on the 3 winning horses
3. Take the remainder and divide that pot equally, one 3rd to each “horse”

As with place or show wagers your payout is impacted by how much was wagered on the other winning horses. The more that was wagered on them, the lower your payout will be.

It’s all in how you look at it. In racing almost all the revenue comes from the wagering. Entrance/ticket fees are minimal. Even a bad betting day at the track usually costs me less than the cost of going to a ballgame.

From a purely betting perspective there are worse bets you could make. Lotteries and some casino games, for example.
