Hoping Venus pulls it out. She is a nice girl and it would be good to see her get another one. Though they typically play pretty average matches, I think this one is going to a classic for some reason.

rooting for Venus tonight, like to see the oldtimer have one last run here. Venus dominated Serena early in their careers before Serena took her game to another level. She would have had a few more Slams if not Serena.

I like Venus more than Serena, but watching someone go for history is fun. I'd love to see a great match, but I suspect Serena wins this one easily.

I think Serena will win it too, but hoping Venus puts up a good fight. Serena is a beast. She will be the best woman player ever.

Wish Serena had someone like Martina had Chris Evert. Think the women's game is not great now.

I think it is at an all time high. There are lots of great women players playing at a level higher than ever. Serena is just on another level above that.

I disagree.the current womens game is full of flash in the pan one hit wonders and has been for about a decade now....the glory years of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s are over

Agree that the women's game isn't at its best. Serena is easily a class (or three) above the rest, but no one can even sustain a consistent threat to her. Djokovic is dominating the men's game, but going into a slam, you feel like Murray, Federer, maybe Nadal (now only at the French I believe). Sharapova is probably the closest thing on the women's side, but don't look up her history versus Serena.

that Sharapova still poses a threat after all this time says something about how the womens game is struggling. Azarenko I think has been playing well and might be ready to challenge Serena again

Pulls it out...whips it out is more like it.

Venus is serving lights out this set and dictating points. Serena's not used to that.

As sure as the sun will rise in the East and set in the west, someone will make a "The Williams Sisters have penises" joke. It took a whole 13 posts. What admirable restraint and rapier-like wit.

There was maybe 3 players during that time that had a chance to win. Outside of Serena, the ladies side goes very deep now. And their level is significantly higher. Whether it be the equipment or training, the girls now are significantly better than ever. Martina has even agreed, as has Chris Evert. Serena would beat men of the 80's. Easily.

These girls are beasts, as are almost all of the girls on tour. It's next level stuff. They most assuredly aren't men, that I can tell you.

It's more than a little ironic that people are body shaming Serena and Venus (who are actual women) while breathlessly telling the world how attractive Caitlyn Jenner (a born man) is.

I'm friends with Serena's agent, and have been to her crib before for pool parties. Her and her sister a sight in bikinis.

Let's go Venus!

A keyboard warrior making a dude joke about an elite female athlete? Sounds like envy... More likely intimidation though. Womp womp

Venus is ok - but since Serena hit the juice she looks like Khalil Mack (and shes had those roid rages to boot)

Hingis, Capriati, Davenport, Henin, Pierce, Clisters, Mauresmo were all threats to win majors from 98-2008 a much deeper group

Very much agree. Davenport, Henin, & Clijsters in particular held the role that Murray, Federer & Nadal do today. They were at the top level with Venus & Serena, not a notch below.

On a separate note, American tennis is sadly very weak. I hopen there's someone on the women's side that can step up once Serena starts to fade, but the men's side is down the crapper I'm afraid. Our top athletes simply don't gravitate to tennis. Would really love to see some young US talent. The Sampras, Agassi, Courier, Chang years were awesome.

This match wasn't "real", they knew who was going to win each set and that Serena was going to move on. Their father gave his marching orders.

Call me crazy but it almost looked like Serena allowed Venus to win the second set. The only player of recent memory who could beat and intimidate Serena in a power game was Clisters (sp). She (Serena) is simply too strong for the Eastern European players. It's not only her serve but the pace of her returns. She is also deceptively quick. In the 70's, 80's and early 90's you would have never had a dominant 33 year old female tennis player. Two issues here, first and foremost she's a great player and her competition is weak. JMHO

They were all Williams contemporaries, though Mauresmo and Pierce were second tier. Still, that ain't the Martina/Evert era mentioned. That is the Williams era.

What is crazy is that she won her 1st major in 1999 and 16 years later she is dominating the sport. You would think soon age would affect her play, but there have been zero signs. She may actually be getting better.

I figured Serena would win . I would like to see her complete the slam .
I attended the day session yesterday as I go to this event once a year . We really need some more Americans to get better on both the women's and men's side to get some more juice into this sport .

where are Serena's contemporaries...she had them in the 00s, she doesn't know, the current crop is not strong and I don't care how hard they hit...MENTALLY these girls are weak, even Serena can be a basket case as you saw in the 2nd set last night

Martina and Chris had the rivalry and they had players like Austin or Madlikova who would jump up from time to time. Then they dealt with Graff and Seles taking over. Who does Serena have? Who is nipping at her heals. There is very little consistency out there. After Henin, Davenport, Clisters crop retired it was over
