OT: Venus v Serena

Serena is simply in a class by herself. Her serve is simply better than anyone's and she can hit 120+ and put it where wants it just when you think the tide is turning against her. Just a better athlete and competitor than the rest. But Venus is a great player as well. I remember well when about 10 years ago when my now HS senior daughter was just starting to play tennis tournaments we had seats just behind the base line at what was then the Sony on Key Biscayne and as Venus was getting ready to serve, she happened to turn around and looked right at my daughter who was intently watching every move Venus made, and Venus gave her a big smile - made my daughter's day. Very cool.

healthy sharapova and healthy venus a few years back were very good players. However your basic premise is probably right. Simona Halep is seeded #2 is all you need to know in 2015. I recall seeing some really weak high seeds in the past few years at the US Open.

I do think it is amazing that healthy she has been a top 3 player for more than 12-13 years consecutively

where are Serena's contemporaries...she had them in the 00s, she doesn't know, the current crop is not strong and I don't care how hard they hit...MENTALLY these girls are weak, even Serena can be a basket case as you saw in the 2nd set last night

Martina and Chris had the rivalry and they had players like Austin or Madlikova who would jump up from time to time. Then they dealt with Graff and Seles taking over. Who does Serena have? Who is nipping at her heals. There is very little consistency out there. After Henin, Davenport, Clisters crop retired it was over

Seles played Evert a total of 3 times. Austin was a flash in the pan, likely due to her car accident. Handlikova? Please.

Serena has Venus, along with those other girls you mentioned. Now? Sharapova would be an ace in another era, Azerenka is very good, wozniacki has won, Ivanovic has won, and there is a whole host of young talent.

Martina had Evert and Evert had Martina. That's it.

Clijsters, Kvitova, Sharapova, Azerenka, and then second tier of very good players.

Serena is dominating great players. It is more about how good she is, not how bad her comp is.

Venus is ok - but since Serena hit the juice she looks like Khalil Mack (and shes had those roid rages to boot)

The one on the right might want to google Lyle Alzado. Do they test for steroids in tennis? And don't anyone tell me she got that big from "legendary workouts" ala Clemens

except those aren't great players....Sharapova washed up and Clisters retired...that's my point. Serena WAS facing top competition. Now she isn't. The only one to beat Serena is herself...where are the challengers.

martina has Chris...Steffi had Monica, Serena has not had ANYONE for the past several years

Call me crazy but it almost looked like Serena allowed Venus to win the second set. The only player of recent memory who could beat and intimidate Serena in a power game was Clisters (sp). She (Serena) is simply too strong for the Eastern European players. It's not only her serve but the pace of her returns. She is also deceptively quick. In the 70's, 80's and early 90's you would have never had a dominant 33 year old female tennis player. Two issues here, first and foremost she's a great player and her competition is weak. JMHO

I agree Serena is a great player but her competition is extremely week. She hasn't had a real rival.

You used 2008 as a break mark. Clijsters won 3 grand slams after that. All of those players were better than Austin and Mandlikova. Serena doesn't have anyone because she is that dominant. Again, even Chrissy and Martina have stated she is the best women's player ever. I will take their word for it, they would probably know.

Where did I say she isnt the best player ever...thats not my argument...although yes I think Graf was. All I am saying is the womens game sucks right now with little consistency with women going from top5 to top 100 regularly

So Serena is the only person to ever scream during a tennis match now? Some people find ways to complain about everything...

Not after opponent's double fault, unforced errors, or on every point of a game. Also the not being ready on the opponent's 2nd serve?

She was over the top obnoxious is this match and I am very upset for ESPN to not call her out on it.

She came up very small post match. Walked off in a huff, was combative in presser and then cut it short. I know she's disappointed but she needs to be better than that.

she screamed herself into unforced errors and lethargic play right after that game to get her back to 3-3. She gave up when it went 4-3 after being up 40-15.

oh well. That Italian women was a great post game interview. Very refreshing.

I didnt watch the match, but I hear other players scream after double faults, unforced errors, and almost every point of the game. She's normally a very passionate competitor, and this was probably a hyper emotional match for her as she was right on the brink of history. My point is, I wouldn't blame her for being a little on edge today of all days. Give her a break.

Agree that Steffi Graf was to me the most dominant player in the last 20+ years.

I think Serena choked plain and simple.

He is she with the most slams is the best. Graf holds that distinction and deserves that title, until someone breaks it. I would be surprised if Serena didn't.

Serena has never been gracious on the court. It isn't a surprise. I don't like talking ill of people who have had me at their house, so I'll just say she isn't the greatest person. Her sister Venus is everything Serena should be off the court.

No player celebrates after others double fault or hit balls in to the net.

i have no issue with serena press conference . she gave tons of credit to Vinci and even said she (serena) played well. i cant fault her for being curt as she was devastated

On a note removed from level of competition is the auras of invincibility that the number one players possess.
Some of these games are nearly won during the warmups. Its difficult to really feel hey I can beat Serena today.
But if you can stay in the match your confidence can grow with every winner you hit.

Note most of the continental European ladies grew up and spent a decade playing on Red clay courts and some never make the transition. Starting there it was all about groundstrokes and these ladies never developed an ability to volley or taking correct angles of approach

But anyway I cannot take anything away from her
What I find exceptional is , with that size, her ability to stay away from back, ankle, knee issues for so long. On the tour your bodies take a hell of a beating and she still keeps bringing it.
