OT: Villanova coach refers to Derek Simpson as "elite"

There was NO way he could have stayed.

Couldn't finish at the rim and a poor 3 point shooter. High volume shooter of mid range jumpers off the dribble. Go down a level and possibly have more success in getting to the rim. He had to settle for the mid range shots at this level.

Beautiful form shooting but way too many bricks...legit had me wondering if he had some sort of vision problem.

Happy for him but where is my best Rodney Dangerfield - "elite at what, I don't know."

Derek had the build of a high school senior. I was shocked he so looked like that as a sophomore. Bad FG%, great FT%. There's no way I would want him for our team this year over Derkack, or really any of our rotation guys. Possible exception is Acuff but let's see what he looks like when he gets more into game condition.

Derrick, might have performed better with better pieces around him, he was not of the caliber to carry a big ten team, expectations were beyond his skill set, he needed to be developed. To much to do and to little time for development.

Hope Simpson has success. I was one who told people he wasn't as good as they thought after the end of his freshman year and then that he wasn't was bad as they said last year.

I do believe that Derek hit the game winning shot against Stonehenge last year. Of course Stonehenge was a bunch of stiffs and wound up only winning four games.

I wish him well but there was a reason I started calling him CLANG last year. That was the only sound the ball made when he shot it.

In fairness one rebound and five assists in a nice win over Texas Tech.
Three Rebounds and three Assists in a single digit loss to a good Texas team.
Does good things when not scoring.

Simpson is going to go for 30 against St. Louis U and Cream Abdul Jabbar and we aren't going to hear the end of it...We will have to put him on a temporary 24 hour ignore.

Great Carino article on Simpson.

Whereas Cliff Omoruyi is platooning at center for Alabama and Mawot Mag and Gavin Griffiths are barely contributing at BYU and Nebraska, respectively, Simpson is averaging 8.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 32 minutes per game. He is Saint Joseph’s top perimeter defender and shares lockdown tips gleaned from a certain former teammate with his new backcourt mates.

“The big person I got my advice from is Caleb McConnell,” he said of the Scarlet Knights’ former Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. “I think about some of the things he’s taught me, how he watches people’s hip movements. Little things like that I try to pass on to these guys.”

I would much rather have Simpson on this years roster than JMike.

Simpson was asked (and tried) to do way too much last year. He logged too many minutes and took way too many shots.

He does have elite speed and was a pretty good defender and we could have leaned on his skills this year. I think he could have provided a pretty valuable 15-20 minutes a game this year, but transferring down was a good move for him.

JMike is looking like a bust and unless he turns it around we have to move on from him once Ace is gone. He’s a worse version of Simpson.

Simpson is at the level and place to suit his talents. He is doing the best of all the transfers because he actually does have ability. Cliff is over his head. Gavin is lost and Mag is getting some karma.

Firmly believe would have helped us this year.
B1G level speed, defense, handle and foul shooting. Only thing not B1G worthy was shot.
6 assists against Princeton. Wouldn’t have had to shoot as much if at all this year. Would have been a nice senior leader next year when Ace and Dylan are gone.

Some others said that all along. Pike said quickest player ever coached. Won us games over two years. NJ kid. 100% hustle and effort and many turned on him. SMH

Don't make me pull up past quotes Pike has made about past players. Pike knowing I value D told me to my face I was going to love Hyatt.

I don’t know, Simpson, Hyatt and Cliff carried us to within one game of being .500 last year after the late defections. Pretty good coaching job. Cliff got his pay day, but like Jacob & Paul, they did better under Pike.
Worked for Cam. Never know.

Although Wenzel’s over seas trip helped RU immensely, don’t think Portugal helped us at all.

Wenzel's overseas trip gave new life to a group that knew nothing but loss after loss. Plus they got to understand what their new coach expected of them and started to buy in that he could indeed turn them around

Simpson and Davis drives look the same. A wing and a prayer. Simpsons drives this year are still terrible.

Cliff looks good. Their coach is smart. He is getting the most out of Cliff and no more. ZERO post ups. He's a great dunker and it looks like at least 90% of his baskets will be dunks. It looks like his role has been made very clear to him and he has accepted it.

6 assists against Princeton nothing to shake a stick at. Pardon my grammar.
St. Joes having a decent year. Two upset wins. Credit where credit due.
Think we could have used him. Maybe he makes late free throws against Kena State. Thought his handle was under appreciated. He could break press on his own.
Certainly would have liked him next year.

I agree in all aspects (particularly that Simpson may have contributed more on this team) except your assessment of JMike as a “bust”

. He wasn’t a high level recruit. His only other high major offer was auburn. Not sure he’s actually under performing. Just saying

All of you are missing the point entirely on Simpson - those who wanted RU to keep him, and those of you who wanted to be rid of him, those of who who are complimenting him and those of you who are criticizing his performance. Al lof you.

HERE are the points you ALL should consider:

1) Pikiell made it crystal clear before the season ended last year that he WAS going to do things differently managing and constructing the roster than he had done the prior season ... and he made it pretty damn clear what he meant by that: He was NOT going to get burned, again, by players deciding to leave LATE, the way Spencer in May and Mulcahy in JUNE (for goodness sakes!) burned him and RU. Pikiell made it pretty clear long before the season ended he would do it differently, in other words force players to decide right away.

2) Almost certainly, there was a conversation with each player over their expected role - expected by Pikiell and the staff - on the team for the next season, based in large part on the expected role of the incoming freshmen, especially Harper, Bailey and Sommerville.

3) It was obvious, for example, that Griffiths was told he'd be a bench player, a role player (I heard RU wanted to keep him, but he and his "people" wanted more, plus NIL $$). Also, almost certainly, Woolfolk was told he would NOT be a starter (either Ogbole, Sommerville or a recruited transfer - or all 3 - would pass him). Omoruyi probably told the staff what the market for his services were, and RU obviously could not afford the $1 M+ it was going to cost - and maybe did not want to pay that even if they had the NIL, since the centerpiece of the team would be Harper and Bailey. The staff obviously very much wanted to keep Williams - as arguably the veteran returnee who was also RU's best player this past season, and possibly Davis (the Bailey factor for Davis). Mag - meh - hands washed almost certainly. Whioch brings us to Simpson ...

4) We do not know if RU wanted to keep Simpson or not - I have heard nothing on that subject. BUT ... it is obvious that any conversation about his role for RU this current season would have entailed informing him that Harper was the starting PG and Williams the starting 2G ... that Bailey likely was the WF ... that the priority was to add quality 3-point shooters, who would presumable also compete for reserve time at the WF and G positions ... so Simpson's role would necessarily be a 15 mpg back-up at PG - at best ... and that Davis would also be competing for the same role. VERY LIKELY, ALMOST CERTAINLY, Simpson made the choice (and probably a good one for him), to be a STARTER,(starting PG), dropping down 1 level to the A-10, rather than be a 10-15 mpg reserve for RU. Oh, by the way, Simpson and Woolfolk transferring was the most predictable end of the season event possible - we all knew they were gone.

5) The result: Pikiell knew who was staying and who was leaving before the portal even opened, I suspect. Now, many may be unhappy with the players Pikiell got in the transfer portal, but

I am glad for Simpson that he is doing relatively well at St. Joes: He had no role at RU that he was willing to play, and I will never fault a player for leaving to be a STARTER somewhere else. But he was NEVER playing 32 mpg for RU ... so the BEST case for him at RU this year: cut his stats in half, let's say, because his minutes are cut in half: 4.5 ppg, 1.8 ass/g, 1.7 rpg. In other words ... Davis, essentially, though just a bit better, I suppose (He is shooting a bit better than Davis, admittedly - and is also a year older).

By the way, I am also glad for Omoruyi - there was no way RU could pay him what Alabama and other were willing to pay - in other words WILDLY overpay for his value. So I am very glad he is getting a big payday, plus playing for a National Championship contender - good for him! Mag and Griffiths? Sometimes you sow what you reap, eh? Happy to see them ... um ... suck. Griffiths turned down from RU what would have been a larger role than he is getting at Nebraska - and his performance is earning him that extremely limited role. Mag? We know the story there.

FYI, Jalen Miller, as a 5th year Senior, is finally doing pretty well, eh? Good for him, also.

The amazing thing is, the other two guards actually shoot at a lower % than he does.
I happen to agree with you, he was much better overall LY than people think. The awful shooting clouds judgement. Would have liked to see him these two years, but we don't need both he and JMike on a team w JWill and Derkack, so someone had to go.

Good point - maybe “bust” was the wrong word.

But JMike is getting too many minutes this year and it’s looking like he may also need to transfer down after this year, unless he really turns it around.

His minutes are certainly less than last year and I suspect his minutes will lessen as the year goes on
