Headed up this week figured I'd ask since there is always great info on here...what to eat, where to drink, anything else to visit??

I lived there in the 80' Much has changed but it is a great town to eat drink explore history and listen to the accents ..At Fenway sit on the right field roof. I have been to many games all over the country but the 3 hours I spent up there were by far the best I will ever spend at any sporting event

I am taking clients to the game Thursday night. Jamming right now. I will post again this afternoon a list of stuff - MANY MANY Options

Are you up to see a game or sightseeing?

Where to eat and drink before

Across the street from the stadium on Brookline Ave - loud and fun sports bars,. Two floors
Cask N' Flagon
Game On

One block away on Brookline Ave- saw dust on the flood, true Boston Red Sox bar. Two floors. Great spot
Copperfields

Where some of us yuppies go, two blocks away on Brookline Ave
Yard House. 3yrs old, modern industrial look. Massive round bar in the middle. Bar outside as well. Every beer you can think you can get in those skinny yard glasses. Loud and fun

Kennmore Sq just off Brookline Ave, two blocks away on the other side
Eastern Standard - Google it. Very popular restaurant and bar we take clients before games. Outdoor seating along the street.
Island Creek Oyster: Next to Eastern Standard. Good luck getting in. I put my resi in a month ago for this Thursday night.

Lower your expectations. Fenway is a dump. Enjoy how weird it is, but seriously, it's a dump.
Agreed. I am not in the "Its so nostalgic," BS. The seats in the lower bowl are from yesteryear so they are narrow. Tight fit. If they renovated, MLB would make them put in wider seats, from what I understand. Then they'd lose seats per row.

Its EMC or State Street Pavilion or nothing.

Really? I went once and thought it was great - I felt like I was back in the 1920s which I enjoyed. Also, the passion of the fans was great - everyone was into the game. I definitely want to go again.

Lots of great options for eats...Jerry Remy's is a great pre-game meal option if you want to sit and enjoy. Cask N Flagon is a classic. Tasty Burger is very good to grab a quick bite but not necessarily hang out.

I highly recommend checking out the Bleacher Bar that is located under Green Monster on Landsdowne St - great and unique spot. One of my favorites.

Check out the Williams, Yaz, and Teammates statues on Van Ness St of the ballpark. Get in early to walk around the ballpark and soak in the atmosphere. The old time feel of the park and even the old wooden seats are great. It's a old classic and I love it every time I go.

As far what else to visit - do you mean immediately surrounding Fenway?

As an NYY fan, I adored the old stadium, but that was a dump as well. Sometimes you just need to move on. There is a fine line between quirky and cute and old and annoying!

Another shout out for the Bleacher Bar on Landsdowne Street behind CF. Before the game they open up the garage doors facing the field and fans can see into the stadium as players do pre game warm ups. Very cool and unique experience.

Have to agree. Been there twice and my neck is still sore from turning my head all game to see the action at home plate. Wrigley is light years better as old ballparks go.

Boston College University has a campus somewhere outside the city of Boston, but who am I fooling....nothing to see there.

Boston College and Boston University are two separate institutions. BU is downtown. I don't know where BC is, but I don't *think* it's downtown. BU's location is one reason why its students like attending there.

Ironically in my first (and only) year as a full Yankees season ticketholder (and my last 4 day vacation in 1996) I got on the Sox mailing list and promptly won the lottery for Green Monster tickets! Tried to land Yankees or Mets tickets (3 for myself, and my chauffers Piscataway Mike and Brother) but couldn't. get. Had the smarts to do the next best thing-see when Jimmy Buffett was playing Mansfield "Tweeter Center" at that point. Scheduled Buffett (Mansfield reputed to be a top Buffett venue) for Thursday and Saturday and the Sox for Friday night. Some of my recommendations if you are staying in the area:

1) Schedule and take the historical tour. Lots of history. They dont like you cutting in and not paying for the on going tours.

2) ***If you at all can (especially in August) GO TAKE ONE OF THE 2? WHALE WATCHING EXCURSIONS FROM THE HARBOUR/FENUIEL HALL AREA. Got the brothers interested in such, and in one of the best days of my life we went whale watching (bumper to bumper whales breaching, yada) in the AM and drove over to Buffett for the PM show in Mansfield. WHAT A DAY. As a bonus Mike and brother really developed an affinity for one of the whales named "Michelob".

3)Of course walk the Fenuiel Hall area. If you like seafood this is your place for cheap seafood. Federated? was busy so Mike found a small place that served a lobster lunch for $10-$12 or so. Mike and brother really enjoyed-would love to post related pic if I could find (mike in bib LOL) and knew how to post pics!

4) Liked Fenway (but good or bad sans a few renovations it's old). Don't pay for overrated Green Monster and roof? tickets. ***They were like overpriced, glorified bad, high bleacher seats with a table in front of you. I felt worse when I heard they went that night (for an Orioles game nevertheless) for a record $700 per! The bleachers were so high I I was scared. It was so windy that there was more air up there than in this AM's thread where some board "rookies" made negative comments on me posting that experiences/my experiences had nothing to do with why people donate or not!

5) Take one of those for money pics as there are some great purchase options. Later I purchased a talking picture option for two pics. On one I yell, "The Sox S*ck, BC s*cks!".

6) Hotels in Boston proper are mega expensive but some offer the RARE and TOUGH parking/free parking so desparately needed. Find someone who knows the trains and take the train in. Fairly quick and convenient.

7) Probably not smart to wear a Yankees cap at Fenway...

8) Mystic Seaport is a nice stopping point on the way up. Another placed we staged and stayed (15 inutes/miles outside Cape Cod-sadly didn't go) was an award winning Days Inn.

9) Like Mike and brother do so well check out the state concert scene. In August Massachusetts almost always has some top shows. Buffett and Kenny Chesney are regulars.
Last year I think Jason Aldean played Foxboro. Bruce and the Zac brown Band have also played Foxboro/else in recent years in August.

Have fun. Loved our trip. Been bugging Mike and brother to go back since. Hopefully Mike adds as he and his brother have made this trip several times.

I enjoyed my only trip to Boston. I stayed in Cambridge and used the T to get downtown and walked the Trail (on the hottest day of the summer) and then out to the two art museums near the T -- went by Fenway in the process. I hope to take the tour the next time I'm up there. I have been to Mystic Seaport and agree with the poster that it is a good stopping place.

I suggest starting a "let's go Yankees!" Chant! They are very welcoming I hear! [winking]

Camden, I was hoping you'd give us the names of the strip clubs ;>)

Somebody want to let our friend in on the joke?

You take the T outbound from downtown, green line, B train to Kenmore Square. The C and D also stop at Kenmore. A ton of people will be with you.

Get out there at Kenmore and that is where all the bars and restaurants start on a short walk to Fenway Park. You are basically on the east end of BU when you are at Kenmore Square. Just walk west on Commonwealth Avenue from Kenmore and that is all BU for the next mile. Also, if you stay on the B train heading outbound it ends at BC in the middle of their campus. It's just a few miles out.

Fenway Park is off Brookline Ave spur on left as you you leave Kenmore square. You walk over the Mass Pike and you are there. You will pass a bunch of bars, restaurants and chains in Kenmore and on your way to Fenway, inluding the spots mentioned above, though some like Copperfields are just past Fenway on Brookline ave.

Eastern Standard is a good pregame option if you want something nicer than a sports bar.

Spend a little time walking around the outside of the place. It's an interesting scene.

If your first trip go for the regular seats. It is part of the experience.

I'm spoiled as usually I am a corporate guest in the EMC suite and that is very nice way to spend an afternoon or evening.

Wear your McCourty Jersey.

And be sure to find a local and tell them Brady is a cheat.

Both places are terrific. My wife's cousin has some sort of "in" at Island Creek Oyster, so we kind of waltzed right in and got a great seat ... I had a feeling we were beating the system somehow, but I didn't realize how much!

That guy has some in. You need to comb Open Table everyday prior to a month out (They don't open the tables until its within 30 days!). Forget looking two weeks out.

not to steal the thread, but I'm making the drive up to mass from NJ this week. How much are the tolls? Think I may take I-84 or follow CT-15N from route 287.

Fenway? I would head to Gillette and Patriots Place for New Orleans at New England Thursday night. Patriots Place is what Xanadu should have been. The stadium and complex were built for less then the additional money Xanadu is seeking.

A bus/duck boat tour is not a bad way to see the city.

Were you not in Rutgers Stadium on the night of November 9, 2006?

I believe the Jerry Remy restaurant near Fenway is closed.
It's open - just re-named to "Tony C's". Boston Beer Works is our favorite in the Fenway area.

Try to grab a meal in the North End - its a short walk from Quincy Market. There are a billion good places to eat there. Get a cannoli at Mike's Pastry.

North end for Italian. Cambridge has good breakfast places, Harvard is cool to visit. Moving my middle one there this weekend. Will spend more time there i guess. But spent a decent amount of time while she attended BC. Copely square is neat but expensive.

I went to both in the same season. Yanks vs Sox, and Cards vs Cubs. The Cubs fans were not into the games, while one of the yankees games was 21-1 yankees, all the fans stayed and chanted "yankees suck" to the end. Wrigley was a huge disappointment

If you have never done the tour - do it - yes, it is a touristy thing to do - but it is a way to see parts of Fenway that you would not typically get to visit.

This..... I went on the tour in the fall right after they won the World Series..... The guide we had was great, but I am sure they all do a good job.... Got to sit in the green monster, see the awards area beneath the stands,etc... Well worth the fee they charged.... Normally they also let you into the dugout, but they were redoing the field, so that was a no go.

very odd. I've been to a Cards v. Cubs game at Wrigley, and the fans were really into it. Cub fans *hate* Cardinal fans. The Cub fan next to me threw peanut shells into the hair of a female Cardinals fan sitting several rows in front of him; "they do the same to us in St. Louis," he explained. The Cubs lost big, but the fans stayed.

lol...must have been an off night, just wasn't as "electric" of a crowd that day I guess!
