OT: We may win the World Cup in 2026

Maybe you missed my post above. I just can't watch other college football games after terrible RU losses, like today (as opposed to last week, where we were very competitive).
I get that.. I often have felt similarly. I guess the fanfare of the Red River thing put me in the mood.. and the competitive PSU-USC was a real contest. or maybe I have checked out from Rutgers Football.. I hope not.. but in past years I'd be thinking about basketball season right about now after a few disappointing losses. Maybe if we had lost to Washington and still had OSU, PSU and UM yet to come.... anyway.. I get you.

All set up by a one-two combination play.
One of the prettiest US goals I can recall. The long ball to Robinson and then him gaining control of it and getting it to Pulisic with the great one touch to Aronson and then right back to Pulisic, whose touch on the pass to Musah was perfect, as was Musah's finish on the volley. Just a great goal.

Guess they were all on trying to impress Poch. It was good to see Musah get the goal. He is burried a bit at Milan but is young and has so much promise.

Hope the creative play becomes a hallmark as perhaps the leash is off a bit following Berhalter.

Will be interesting to see how Poch handles the next window. There are other US players who are getting regular time but not in this roster.

Will also be interesting if he is able to recruit more dual nationals to joint the cause or if the pool is set for ‘26.

The next window is not for friendlies. It is the Nations League quarterfinals, home and home, against an opponent to be determined this week. I doubt there will be too much experimenting.

Saw this today and it made me chuckle. In our weekly game I almost exclusively play keeper, but not because I'm easily persuaded, lol - it's because I never played much soccer growing up (was a football kid - nobody played soccer in the 70s) and when I eventually started playing about 17 years ago, keeper was the only position I could be decent at, since I had no foot skills, but played safety in football, which has a lot of similarities to keeper (I'm tall, can jump well, can catch and throw and was used to having the field in front of me and having to move to the ball).

USMNT v Mexico in Mexico at 10:30p. Could be interesting, although a lot of presumed starters are out recovering from injuries.

But it's still interesting because we get to see some new faces (at least in terms of playing time). And it's interesting to see if Pooch can match GB's habit of regularly beating Mexico.

You are Stallone in Victory.

M Robinson starting. Wish I knew the story behind why he hasn’t been a starter all along.

FIFY. This is putrid.
It’s putrid because our midfield is unable to possess the ball. We gain possession at the back, but stall out because our mids are failing to show at the right times in the right places, so our backs are forced to make tough passes which the Mexican players are all over.

Be interesting to see what Pooch does.

I guess A Rob is being taken out to rest him for club play. But he would’ve been one of my keys to punishing Mexico for playing such a high D. Weah, if he was healthy would’ve been another. With this roster, I think the US is going to have to work things out such that the mids can do a better job in support play.

Also, if the US can find an equalizer, I think Pooch needs to stop trying to pressure so high. The US did it well until the goal, or maybe a bit before the goal. But after the goal, we just looked tired. Interesting ‘cause that’s what the US was doing to Mexico in the matches over the past couple/few years.

Nothing to point to with coaching in the game, way too early and missing so many players. My take away is the US needs to locate more skilled and talented players to add to the top players on the roster. Lot of poor first touches, poor tactical awareness, and poor decision-making by too many of the US players tonight.

There’s just a major lack of depth.

For someone who pays almost no attention to soccer, how do things stand on the title of this thread?
The Not Good: When this thread began we had a number of young players at big time clubs at a host of different positions. Essentially all of them have since gone to smaller clubs or seen degradation in performance/form. We have major holes at goalie and central defense. Dest was playing great but blew out his knee. Adams can't stay on the field due to various injuries. "Golden generations" get old fast given World Cups are every four years. We aren't as young as we used to be.

The Good: Pulisic is the one obvious bright spot, given he did "drop" to the Italian league but has established himself there as their most impactful player and one of the best wingers in the world. He could carry us in a WC but we need to get better all around him. The hiring of Pochettino showed real ambition but it is still mostly about the Jimmies and the Joes not the xs and the os.

From afar, that was my take--not good. Maybe change the name of the thread to something more generic.

USA will play Jamaica home-and-home next month in the Nations League quarterfinals.
Hopefully with more of the better players available. I'm almost over being pissed off at Weah for his brain fart. The team is typically much better when he's on the field. His pace is hard to replace and he just keeps getting better and better with timing his runs and his technical skills.

For Jamaica, having Reyna back would help. But for the future, I think Reyna is a liability against speedy talented teams unless Pooch can find a way to not give Reyna much defensive responsibility. And that doesn't seem like a very Pooch thing to do, if what I've read about him is true.

Is Pooch an actual way people refer to him or this is like your little thing?

Will be most curious about who he brings in. Would love to see Lennard and Maloney get a run with true senior team. Guy is a workhorse. Though I’d presume that needs to be in another friendly window.

I don't think anyone thought we were seriously going to win the 2026 WC, but we've improved a bit since the thread started and are up to #17 in the FIFA rankings, but there's still a long way to go to do much more than get out of the group stage and maybe get an upset in the first knockout round, which would tie our best finish in the modern era, iirc.

Hey! Quit talking about my little thing, like I don’t get enough of that from the women in my life. 😀

It seems to be how the media refers to him. Not my invention. But it’s a lot easier to type than his actual name, so I adopted it.

I am not in full agreement with the quality designations. I think Weah is nearing eliteness, but needs to be in the right system with the right supporting cast to show it clearly.
