I have a set of ping G. In the set, I have a sand wedge and a pitching wedge. What is the difference between buying:

a.) Ping G gap wedge and a Ping G lob wedge
b.) Ping glide wedge 50 SS and wedge 60 SS.

I know the same can be asked for Callaway mack Daddy wedge or just going with the lob wedge and the gap wedge in the Xr set.

I just recently picked up the game about 10 months ago and am now starting break 100. I am now really addicted to this game.

I might be understanding incorrectly, but as a beginner, I'd want to have something between 50 and 60 degrees -- probably 56 degree is best. Just go buy a 56 degree wedge separate from any set of irons you have and pick the one that feels right.

Pretty awesome that you're already breaking 100 after only 10 months.

The G wedges should be more forgiving, especially on full shots. However, the glide wedges (or vokeys, clevelands, mizunos, etc) will be more versatile around the green for high lobs, low running spinners, etc.

As a beginner, it might not be bad to get G gap wedge so you have a good full shot wedge between PW and SW.

As for LW, I would get a standalone that you test and like the bounce and turf interaction. So many standalone wedges from Titleist, Mizuno, Cleveland, Callaway, Ping, TaylorMade, etc.

Personally, I would play iron set clubs through gap wedge and then whatever SW and LW you like for your short game shots.

Thanks. I don't work for golftec (pricey), but have been taking lessons from them the whole time. I also am at the driving range every day (pretty much) hitting a small $5 bucket before work. I also play 9 holes (par 3 course) once a month and 18 holes 4 times. With all this time and money spent, most dudes with average to below average coordination can probably do it. I just love this game! BTW, when I said starting to, I meant I just did this (broke 100) once.

Great advice here.

I will offer some advice as someone who started playing 29 years ago...Develop and practice your short game. Hopefully you have a public course near you with a practice green that allows chipping/pitching. I spent the first 20 years playing rounds and only practicing full shots on the range. During that time I broke 80 maybe a few times a year. Now a round of 83 is an off day for me. Just as an example, on Wednesday in a match I shot 74 and only hit 7 greens in regulation. Had 4 birdies and two were chip/pitch-ins from off the green. 10 years ago I would have shot 83 or so if I hit 7 GIR. My biggest regret in golf is that I did not "fall in love" the short game for my first 20 years of playing. I spent 20 years driving past many folks and still scoring worse.

All you need is a reasonable tee to green game if you are a short game wizard. I know it is not sexy, but devote much of your practice to short game. Years from now you will thank me...

If you're taking lessons maybe it'd be best to get your teacher's opinion. If he/she is any good they should be able to tell you which wedge combination best suits your game. We all want to hit shots like Phil but very, very few can. I'm a believer in you develop your game first then expand from there.

It's been a while since I played with any regularity. Even then I never had much time to practice. I had a lob wedge but found it so hard to use I ended up not carrying anything greater than 54.

That's really good advice. I never knew how to chip because I thought I'd learn on the course. Hugely ineffective trying it a shot at a time every other hole.

Finally last year I went to Galloping Hill one day and spent three hours in their practice area finding a method that worked for me. I'm not great at it but it's shaved probably 6 strokes off at least.

My 4 wedges are Taylormade P 45 degree, Taylormade A 50 degree, Vokey S 56 degree and Vokey L 60 degree. Being sort of OCD, it bugs me that the sandwedge isn't 55 degrees instead of 56. Has anyone here had the loft changed on a wedge and was it worth it? I would like to get consistent distance gaps between clubs on my full wedge shots. I know doing that will increase the bounce.
