I know this isn't rocket science but we have a problem at WR. They are some decent players but they are all #3 type receivers. Nobody who is a threat outside of grant.

I agree. None of our receivers really stand out when watching them. We need some more talented receivers in the future. Hopefully the ones we have will step it up a little bit.

I saw this last year, was fearful of it happening again. Teams will focus on Grant

A WR has to catch the ball. We are not talking about Humpty Dumpties with hands going for a pass. If they can catch then the offense is screwed up or the QB is not seeing them.

Best hands I see belong to Cioffi. The INT yesterday was a nice extended hands grab

JuWuan Harris is very fast, I think his role will increase in the next game or 2.

O Line has to improve.
I agree. Juwann harris should get more reps--Rutgers needs wide receivers who can get separation from the defensive backs. The big receivers just don't have the speed or quickness to get separation.

It has to be a combination of big and speed receivers. Use formation and motion to create mismatch to the receivers' advantage. Even with the big receivers motion can create problems for the defense. One thing I would like to know is why the big receivers who lack elite speed not work on becoming dominating possession receivers? They need to bully DB and in return it will help the QB.

I expected more bubble screens to Harris and Bailey. That said since the secondary is the UW strength I guess the staff wanted to attack otherwise.

Agudosi has to give us more than 1 catch for 5 yds.
Yesterday on scarletknight.com during the game they had a link to UW site giving detail info on the game. Grant had 9 catches and was targeted 11 times. Goodwin had 5 catches while being targeted 9 times. Arcidiacono had 4 receptions while targeted 5 times. Agudosi had 1 catch and was targeted 3 times. I don't recall how many times Patton was targeted.

Our WRs get no separation. Time to bring in the young guys with speed and have them deal with the growing pains on the field. This season is a lost cause anyway as I can't see more than four or five wins.

A true mobile qb would create more opportunities for our wr's....
That is true because a mobile QB would force the defense to keep an eye on him. Anytime you have the defense guessing the offense has the advantage. Yesterday UW pinned their ears back and rushed knowing CL couldn't successfully move up field for positive yards when he was forced out of the pocket. They could rally to CL and keep him to little or no yard on his carries which they did.

With Grant being such a speedster, why can't they send him long and see if he can burn them (like we were burned 3 times)? Or is it because Laviano is so poor at throwing a bomb? How do you go an entire game and not once throw it long? A shame as Grant can really fly. First game.... and I hope they learned a lot of lessons and made the correct corrections. Perhaps Laviano is not a game day passer when the pressure is real but a practice pro.

Here's one, and it may be the best we see for this year:

That's a good question. @cubuffsdoug ?

Grant is very elusive but he doesn't have elite top speed and his hands aren't great. I agree that he probably should be running more deep routes but he's best utilized in space, getting the ball in his hands ASAP.

Grant had enough speed to chase down the DB that intercepted Laviano. More of a problem with route running and hands not his foot speed.

He misses open receivers even when he has time. He stared right at open guys & couldn't pull the trigger. He shouldn't be playing.
Well sure he shouldn't. We should have a Heisman trophy candidate playing for us.

But we don't. The QB we do have playing for us requires the rest of the team to perform considerably better to give us a chance to win. And when the rest of the team does play well, he generally plays a whole lot better.

He can't do it alone and he shouldn't get singled out as having been the cause of yesterday's loss.

Patton needs to be more productive. Up to this point he really has not developed into a "go to" type of receiver. Agree that Harris might be the guy to complement Grant. Seems like in this offense it is also very important for the receivers to be able to block on these quick tosses to the other WR.

our passing game is an issue - whether it's the receivers or the QB remains to be seen.

It's hard to tell much when your QB is on his back or running for his life most of the game.

I would agree, I did not see our receivers find space. whether bubble screens or deeper down field..they always seemed to be tightly covered.

the wheel route to the RB was the only thing that seemed to produce much separation.

Our QB has one of the weakest arms in the country. You could read war and peace by the time his throw reaches downfield

I expected to see more picks by our WRs to create separation for their teammates. I don't remember any. We need to get separation with our scheme with picks/screens and misdirection.

Beautiful example by Houston (we are running that O, right) later in the game when the widest WR screened the LB who was covering the H back for an easy, walk-in TD. The h back wide WFO. I really want to see smart plays that get our guys open against everyone, and especially against these talented defenses we play.

Sorry Mildone, but as the QB part of the leadership qualities, is to get the team to play better, as well as support his own mediocrity. Laviano did neither.
Applause, as well as critics come with the position. Anyone who has ever played the position knows that.
I saw a QB that was tentative, did not pull the trigger, and often had more than enough time to throw the ball, but looked for a landing spot, instead. He just might be one of these players that look great in practice, but melts away when the lights come on.

Part of the problem with watching TV coverage though, is that when the QB did have time, which wasn't often, you cannot see the receivers and the coverage. So you see the QB taking a long time to get the ball out, but you don't know if its because he is not pulling the trigger, or if it is because everyone is covered.

He isn't and they arent going to have him throwing into coverage on a prayer. That will lead to games getting even out more out of hand than Saturday's mess.

Lol In what universe does Grant not have elite top speed???

His hands (as you noted) and his route running are his main weaknesses as he isn't a pure receiver (see Devin Hester). But Speed was never his issue, he's one of the fastest players around.

WR talent was clear last year, how poor it was, when Carroo was off the field. Again, this goes back to FLOOD staff recruiting and all those 'under the radar' great recruits Flood brought in along with the 'get the kids who want to be here" type talent that Flood sold to the fan base ,and some bought into. Its all about recruiting, which is why we MUST hold onto this class to rebuild the program.

I'm not defending Flood but #13 Was a Schiano recruit, (#88 too?)that have never really been productive. Of course the Flood WR recruits didn't pan out either. I'm for going with the young guys (along with Grant.)

Yup. This is what the gradual drain of talent looks like. Each year, about 1/4 of the team turns over. Flood had four years. Do the math. This year it is, for the most part, entirely his recruits. Carroo is the most recent and stark example of how the team has each year become less talented, not more. To steal a line from Hemmingway, how did RU become bankrupt of talent? -- Two ways, gradually and then suddenly.
