Overall, I think the Secondary played EXCEPTIONALLY well

Isiah Wharton had a TERRIFIC game in man-man coverage. While he may have benefited by going up against a first year player, he had a number of pass breakups, which looked impressive. Austin might have gotten beat a couple of times, but thats going to happen when you play a team like Ohio State with their athletes. Overall, i thought he was strong too. Kiy Hester was all over the field, and made a number of great hits, especially his open field tackle of Curtis Samuel. He seems to be coming into his own, and will be a great one for us, similar to Courtney Greene and Duron Harmon. Cioffi might have missed some tackles, but overall had a productive game. This secondary is going to develop into one of the best in the B1G in upcoming seasons. Now if we could just find a pass rush....

Nobody played well when you lose like that. Secondary gave them 10 yard cushions most of the time which led to very easy completions.

Wth are you talking about. We lost by almost 60 points.

the reason we lost like that was because the offense didn't do jack and everyone else was overpowered. The secondary was especially productive in tackles, which isn't something you want to see.

The weak link now appears to be Cioffi. Seems slow to react and not an aggressive tackler.

This has been a concern for a long time.
Interesting to see when Hampton returns ( this weekend ?) and who will be the two starting Safeties .

even in a 60 point less, there can be bright spots which should be pointed out. Also thought Hamilton and Wilkins had good games, though their impact isn't always felt in the boxscore.

700 yds is 700 yds. Take off the scarlet glasses. Disgraceful performance even with the minute improvements

statistics don't always tell the story. its not the secondaries fault that everyone else looks like they're playing on roller skates at times.

Al is right here. Some of the other people in this thread lack fundamental football knowledge.

OSU led time of possession by almost 18 minutes. Our offense managed 9 first downs - three of those were on the first drive and another three came on OSU defensive penalties. We had 33 yards passing. THIRTY THREE. For the whole game. And 88 yards rushing.

You put your defense on the field for 39 minutes against what may well be the best team in the nation and they're gonna give up huge numbers. Al's point is entirely valid, Wharton and Austin played very well - they were the bright spots of the color broadcast, the only guys who got consistent props. Wharton especially was called out no fewer than 3 times for making great plays on the ball.

The secondary played very well. They were often mopping up tackles that were missed by our linebackers. They also tackle very well. Barrett picked apart our zone but that's only because he had all day to throw and our D was exhausted. Our secondary is the best part of our defense right now and also has a bright future.

I hope RU has such "tough" days passing as OSU's 25 of 36 for 259 yds and 4 TDs

Been saying this for 3 years. Somebody back a couple years ago lambasted me because I "lol'd" when he said Cioffi would be "all-conference by his senior season." There was a play yesterday where he was just standing there and didn't budge until the last second as the runner broke into the backfield along the sideline.

There were a few very good plays by our secondary, even noted as such by the commentators, that didn't have positive results. Barret was putting balls exactly where they needed to be and their bigger WR's were making plays. Now...there were also times when the secondary was nowhere near the ball...so there's that.

My issue: we can't hold onto a ball, to intercept a pass, to save our lives. I'm pretty sure we've dropped 6-7 balls this season that were in our hands, 3 of which would have been pick-6's including one yesterday (OSU scored on the next play IIRC), that were all passes any of us could have picked off.

You need to brush up on your FB knowledge. Al is absolutely correct here. If you watched the game you would see that our defense, especially the secondary, looked rock solid, and guys were making tough plays all over the place. The problem is our Offense completed 4 freakin passes. We would literally kick the ball away the second they took the field. It doesnt matter how good your defense is playing, your offense needs to have possession to give your D time to rest especially when facing one of the best offenses in the country. The only things that are "disgraceful" here is our offense along with your analysis

It is physically impossible to play effective man to man coverage for basically 60 min straight against the most explosive team around.. youre going to get worn out. Our non-existent offense gave them zero chance to rest. You guys have got to get better at watching football.

I agree with you. In the first quarter Rutgers defense was competitive and physically matching up well with OSU. However, when the offense gives you no break, no momentum, and the punter is having trouble kicking the ball deep into OSU territory , the defense will eventually wilt from exhaustion.

We are out manned and out gunned. The effort our secondary showed against OSU was outstanding. We tackled well in the open field.

We have maybe 3 or 4 players on our 1st team that would even be in the OSU 3 deep.

There is only so much you can do when the talent/speed differential is so much. Some of you dumb as a brick bastards can't seem to get that through your thick skulls.

Ash, in his post-game press-conference, disagreed with you. He felt the defense played poorly. The score basically validates his position on that.

J.T. Barrett Stats:

21 29 238 Yards 4 TD 1 Int.

Those are not the numbers of a QB playing against a secondary that's playing well.

what else is he going to say. from his point of view, either the defense as a whole did well or didn't do well. the secondary is one component of the defense.

Have noticed quite a few plays where he was slow to react or was out of position. Also doesn't seem to provide aggressive run support.

What are you guys talking about?

Cioffi and Hester are often mopping up missed tackles by our linebackers.

Why was this never talked about with Lorenzo Waters? He was a terrible cover safety and missed a crapload of tackles. Davon Jacobs wasn't good either. Cioffi is probably better than both of them.

Until someone teaches our defensive backs to look for the ball and not just the receiver, interceptions will be at a minimum. This isn't something new because even when we were good on pass defense, we didn't do it. Very rarely see other DBs always chasing receivers with no relation to the pass. That's how you become good.

Our DBs are using the correct technique. Fans have been complaining about this going back to the Schiano years, but they are simply wrong.

this thread is comical. NOBODY played well in secondary when you give up pass plays for touchdowns and OSU had over 600 yards of offense. Take this thread down please. RutgersAl is annoying

Might be doing that, but they never intercept the ball when they are with the receiver because he sees the ball and our guys don't. Happened Saturday again in the corner of the end zone. Think it was #10 right on the receiver, but didn't see the ball - result TD.

Yeah, and against Iowa, one of our DBs, Hester I think, got caught looking at the QB instead of the WR and the WR took advantage of that by sliding back to catch a ball on the way to Iowa scoring the go ahead TD.

Think about it. Schiano AND Ash both coach the technique basically the same way and both of them are defensive specialists.

And if you watch a lot of CFB, you'll see the exact same technique across lots of teams, including OSU and Alabama.
