Overrated?

We're a good team, but not great yet.

We're dealing with injuries at the guard spot (Acuff + JWill) and we also have 3 freshman who are taking on significant minutes. Patience is required. We'll find out if we can get in a groove and get to great.

TBH, I’m not yet sure we’re a good team. I just hope so.

We’ve only played one good team and we lost. It was an exhibition game so both coaches were surely using it as a practice in some ways. So we don’t want to over-value the result.

But that just means we have yet to win any games against good teams. So we really don’t know how good we are yet, or even if we’re good. We’ll find out soon enough.

We are in the bottom half of the country in pace, we don't play fast. In fact, we may be playing slower than LY's total thus far. We aren't full of good half court players, we probably should play faster. Just not sure we have any players in the top 500 nationally after the two kids.
Tbf we’re like 60th in average offensive possession rate, we’ve just played teams that operate at a snail’s pace offensively

The defense needs to get figured out. The good news is that is Pike's specialty

Help defense isn't there

Lathan needs to buy in more and not lose focus on D. Sometimes it looks like he is trying to conserve energy on defense

2 main reasons I’m not concerned yet

1. I would rather be good offensively and need work defensively than the other way around. I trust Pike to figure it out.

2. I have never been all that concerned we were in danger of losing any game so far. Maybe St. Peters for a minute. We have been able to get out to 10-15 point leads the problem has been building on that and destroying the other team. We have made the shots or gotten the stops when needed.

Idk I’m having fun, each game feels like an event. This isn’t a perfect team but I’m confident we haven’t seem anything close to a final product. Trying to enjoy and savor the time we have these 2 phenomenal players

I feel the same and said this to my friend at the game

St. John’s just played Baylor to the wire and lost by one. They may very well be a top 10 team, I would not overreact to how we played, especially so early.

To be fair, Ace missed 50% of those games.
Well the data is about equal game 1 and 2 vs 3 and 4.

I also believe the point spread moved with us being favored more after Bailey was announced out vs st perers. Thats what i was told and didnt see it with my eyes.

It’s absolutely ridiculous reading the same crap from certain posters. Those same people find anything to complain about and not just be happy.

Are we a perfect team? No. Will we get better? Yes

Just enjoy it
I am a fanatic of my favorite teams, RU sports, Rangers, Yankees, Giants.
RU first and foremost.
I dissect every detail of information, every play, every call, every coaching decision, every game is like life and death in the moment…
I will NEVER sit back, relax and enjoy the ride….impossible

There seem to be a lot of “relax”
Fans on here…. Good on them.
I ain’t one of em.

If this happened (no idea) I can pretty much 100% guarantee you that Bailey being out was not the reason for it.

I see where this has been stated by the talking heads. Have to think a performance like last night would certainly help to lead to that assessment.
We play a team that is 4-1 on Sunday at their place. I think this will be a watershed kind of game for us. We better show up with a lot more fire in our bellies if we want to win this one.
I think people are mistaking lack of experience, which leads to tentativeness, for lack of intensity on defense. Whether it’s playing an instrument or a sport, you can’t jam out if you’re still concentrating on playing the right notes/being in the right spot.

another explanation is the news was out way before Ace wasn't playing and it was just more money moving to RU

Yeah.. this doesn't seem plausible.

Yeah.. this seems plausible.
We agree to disagree. We are talking about 1 game against a crappy team. With a player who has been out for a few weeks coming back. I think it would have been reasonable to conclude that in this particular game we would have been better off with a guy like Hayes getting more minutes and being more efficient.

This isn't Ace in the middle of January suddenly being out for the Illinois game. This is a rusty player coming back in a game where his replacement is more than capable of succeeding against the lesser opponent.

I don't have any particular position on whether this is correct. What I don't think is plausible is that the betting market was reflecting this nuanced and controversial view, especially on a Rutgers/St. Peter's game in early November. What is much more likely is that Ace's being out was met with a collective shrug from the market since no one had even seen him play and then people bet on Rutgers for unrelated reasons.

bottom line....didn't appear the news really moved the needle against RU

It was obvious SJU was a very good team when we played them. We were kicking their butts too. SJU had to play their starters all second half to beat us rotating players with our stars playing their first game of college basketball ever

Some said this game was a sign of a bad thing 🤣🤣

I've coached soccer for many years. So I know the difference between tentative and lack of intensity. The two things are not mutually exclusive, so it's possible it's been both things. But for sure there have been periods where at least a couple/few players were just not focused or high-energy. And not just on defense, although that's where it was more obvious.

Some posters have been very focused on highlighting the negative from that game, instead of recognizing that in the first game of our two star freshmen, we held our own until the end against what is increasingly looking like a top 10 St. John’s team.
Oh.

My take on that game was that there were some really good signs from a number of our players. But the team also had a serious lapse on focus/energy in the second half which is what let St. Johns back into it. We never really fully recovered the earlier intensity.

The intensity thing wouldn't have been a big deal if it was a one-off. But it happened in our last two games as well, so it hasn't yet been fixed and I don't think it's an overreaction to not pretend it hasn't been happing.

However, I agree that nobody should overreact to any of this, neither the good nor the bad. It's a young team, but a talented team. They're going to have young team problems. But I would think they'll develop and fix those problems, fairly quickly.

What other teams are "overrated"?
Or should I say, what are are not "overrated"?

Is Purdue overrated?
They had a true freshman center (who is now out). Turns out inexperience at center isn't an automatic deal breaker?

Their best player is widely regarded as overrated (according to most here).

They beat Alabama but got blown out by Marquette.

Are they still supposed to win the Big Ten?

It will be interesting to see how this team reacts when Alabama punches them in the face.

If they do get their face punched in it might just be what they need!

I too am not too concerned for the reasons mentioned above by others. I think the point above from @RacPac12 is spot on "I would rather be good offensively and need work defensively than the other way around. I trust Pike to figure it out.".

If any coach is gonna get this young/new-assembled team to buckle down on D its gonna be Pike.

but even if he cant somehow get this team to play the D it needs (and that limits their ceiling) I am still gonna enjoy this ride. Life is about experiences - and having this team with TWO LOTTERY PICKS is likely never gonna happen so I just say to RU fans - enjoy it for what it is. I'd rather have this team then the plodding, offensively-challenged teams we've had the last few years.

those two and Flagg will not be the first three college players taken in the draft.

Afaict the current projections are
1. Flagg
2. Bailey
3. Harper

Now that doesn’t mean they are the top 3 college players but they definitely could be the top 3 picks next year.

Dylan Harper is exceeding my expectations as a college basketball player. With a really small knowledge of what it takes in the NBA i am going to guess his NBA draft stock falls.

I actually think he’s going to see his draft stock stay very high. But who know, really, about any of them.

Thankfully for us he is playing well within himself. He is scoring dirty and is scoring in the paint.

Can he shoot from the perimeter and make volume 3s? He hasnt.

Believe me i am thrilled he isnt taking bad shots. Ace takes bad shots and so far they go in.

In Harper i see a glue guy. An NBA starter that makes winning plays. Is he a future NBA superstar?

Yes it is early.
