PAT DOWNEY

Perrotti tweet aside, I will eat my shoe if I am wrong on this one.

That said, I trust and support the staff. I suppose if he convinces them he is a changed man, anything is possible. I will support their decision regardless.
If the staff brings Downey in, you know damn well if he even is one toe out of line, he is history.

I'm not saying he's coming but there's clearly interest. I trust the staff & they will manage this like they've managed others.

You've got to be kidding me that some are even considering this and somewhat advocating it. The direction that the RU wrestling program has been heading points nowhere but up and you would consider bringing in a kid who has:

*past legal issues including one that brought 17 charges
-has attended 7 schools so far between HS and college
*booted off the only two D1 programs he competed for
*uses twitter to broadcast drug use and sexual exploits
*held himself out of dual meets - even when coach and trainer said publicly he was cleared to go - and then when accused of not caring about the team, points to the fact that the coaches are no longer there as evidence that he was right
*still needs to graduate in order to be able to compete in D1 and will not achieve this until December at the earliest (by family's own admission) - so he's a one semester wrestler for everyone except ISU.
*has an excuse for every loss he suffers. The one for loss to David Taylor - "the guys who run the tournament set it up so I would have hard matches and he would have easy ones coming in (paraphrasing)." For the one to Bo Nickal - "I got the first TD, then I got tired" & "I was worn out by my previous matches."
- is 25 years old and is still doing this shit
-has a dad who exhibits a similar maturity level on many forms of social media

The guy is scrambling because he has very limited options. Every thing he tweets is designed to bring attention to himself. College age kids like it and tweet at it because, well that's what you do when you a college aged kid.

There is no way this guy shows up at RU short of him entering and completely an extensive rehab program or having a religious epiphany unless I'm completely off-base about what Goodale is all about.

Great post diceman99. if this kid were to come to Rutgers, many fans would direct their donations and support elsewhere. It would be a disgraced and desperate move to put Downey on the team. Camp and Gross were different situations and the coaches knew them and their families. Rutgers fans are new to the national wrestling scene and your knowledge is really helpful. We need to win with good kids.

exactly.
Its pretty simple really - fall in line with the program or be sent packin.
It not that simple. What happens if the kid rapes or assaults another student. Sending him packing is the easy part. Explaining to the media and community why you brought in a wrestler with a violent history who been kicked out of multiple schools is the hard part. Any good will the wrestling program has built is out the window because a coach was stupid enough to think this time it would be different.

Sometimes u gotta take a chance to move up to the next level... the safe road only goes so far.. yes coach might get insulted but he might also get praised if this works out..

Actually, Richie Lewis was considered a bad apple before coming here and it really helps he's friends with Downey.... AP also supports Downey coming here...

Obv this is a big risk but if he can control himself he's a sure fire AA... us beating Iowa... 0.0

To compare Lewis to Downey is a major insult to Lewis. Has Lewis served time in prison and been kicked out of two D1 schools? There is taking a risk and there is fools gold. How much is a one year all American going to help the program. Even with Downey Rutger still has a long way away from beating Iowa. One nut job is not going to do it.

I would be surprised if the coaches bring him in. He has had so many chances, and blew them all. Cael gave Andrew Long a second chance because he knew and trusted him. Long was fine until after the season, then when he was no longer accountable, messed up in a big way. Cael's critics still use it against him. Goodale runs a clean program with high character kids, and I am sure he doesn't want to invite trouble...

Our wrestling program is very good and well-respected in the wrestling community. Gross this year was a great redemption story. Next year's team should be strong throughout, with multiple AAs. I just don't see us messing with that.

We really should at a minimum have 4 AAs (Ash, DelV, Lewis, Gravina) and maybe more if guys like Pagano and Deluca keep growing stronger. On paper we should have our best team ever this upcoming season...125 might be a question mark (Is Paetzall RSing? Is Mackall ready to go?) Outside of that, we're loaded from 133 to Heavy.

Ashnault, Lewis, Cleary have also shown support of this via social media.
What's interesting about this is the leaders of our team are accepting and wants him here. Prolly would be the first time he feels accepted and not judged by his teammates as an outcast.

Everyone else thinks this guy will come and rape and pillage. Brainwash everyone he's around and sell drugs to all. Nope, the leaders of our team are more strong minded then that. One wrong move and ur gone. I don't blame everyone viewing him as a "cyclone" coming through to wreck havoc to any team he comes on to but I could c him as a huge success turnaround story.

On flo's Redshirt 125 pound report they have Mackall as a notable RS coming in to wrestle this year. Seems like the plan is to RS RoadRunner and start Mackall this year.

sorry, but DelV and Gravina are not sure fire AA. the over-under this year for RU AA's is 3. Would you bet your house on the over?

yes this is the plan, assuming Mackall is healthy come Autumn.

Are you aware of how many 184 wrestlers graduated last year? Gravina made it to Blood Round in a stacked weight class last year.
He's right Big Matt, although lots of big guns graduate, there are some big studs coming back from rs(Michigan, Nc state, mizz). Gravina will come into season ranked around 10 so he will be in the hunt.

We have only two locks to AA ,baring injuries , and lots of weights with upside.. so I'll take the over 3

I'm different than most in that I think PD3 would do the right things, abide by the stipulations a coaching staff would lay out for him and pretty much be a choir boy during the season. I seriously do. What would concern me as a coach and ultimately why I'd take a pass on him is the fear of what he'd do after the season, especially if things turned bad on the mat and he didn't reach the levels he thought he would at Nationals. I could see him then throwing everyone under the bus... the coaching staff, teammates, the chicks giving him head on Snapchat....yeah...all of them. Just don't think a year of his talents are worth the potential black eye he could put on a program.

Seriously, johnstown, what in his past would cause you to think this? I get that you think it because it's what happens with normal people like yourself, but why would you think that a kid (25 years old) that has exhibited just the opposite at his last 8 stops over the past 10 years or so would suddenly realize that he needs to toe the line at any time???

I could see it maybe if he turned a new leaf and kept his nose clean for a while, but his indiscretions continue dating back only a few months and his attitude now is basically f** the world.

I just don't get it...

I think his goal is to be a National Champion. If it wasn't, why even continue wrestling? What else would he have to gain to come back? Since I feel that is his goal, I think he'd keep his nose clean in fear of a repeat of this past year and not being allowed to participate at Nationals.

I'm not saying he'd turn a new leaf at all. And I'm certainly not saying he'd be that choir boy for the sake of a program. What I am saying is I think he'd keep his nose clean for selfish reasons. It's all about him and he wants to be a National Champion. Not for his friends, family, his school and program but for his selfish self...

Just like he did this year when his goal was to be a NC? I would guess if they can't beg his way back onto the ISU squad (there have been a couple hints from the PD camp that ISU is not out of the picture, lol) he'll have to settle for being a DII or NAIA champ. But more likely this is it for him in the NCAA - really no value to be added to his future worth with anything except a D1 title, NCAA-wise.

Part of me thinks that his ultimate goal is to get on a fast track in MMA and maximize his start up value. If so, I'll have to tip the cap to him and his dad for living the part so long, like the chinese magician in the Prestige. They probably should consider WWE - longer career available.

Can't see how Downey would positively affect RUs culture that goodale has built over the last 6 years ? Also are we collectively saying that we would rather have Downey as the 84 starter over gravina who is the heart and soul of the team ? Why would Downey come here and wrestling 197?

The squad is filled with young guys (mulligan, correnti , grello, glasgow, patzel...) that needs positive role models to follow and model themselves after . No need for Downey to infiltrate the team and posion the young guys work ethic

Not worth the problems and possible points at nationals

The future is bright and all about the '16, '17 and the large eventual class of '18!!!! Don't lose sight of what is being built !

I think the idea is he would compete for the position at 197 against RS Freshman Mulligan.

Downey is an all American who just beat gabe dean and a bunch of other AAs. He is better than gravina . Why would he come here to wrestle 97?

Counterpoint - I guess he would be one of the favs at 197 , can't say the same at 84 since he got thrashed by bo nickel at the us open

Not worth it in my opinion .

A SHU alum/fan has zero input on the RU Wrestling team. Get a wrestling team and then maybe you can contribute to the conversation. But in all fairness, I seriously doubt Downey comes here at the end of the day. Too much baggage.

Easy, your inference is incorrect, never attended seton hall. I'm a loyal RU fan who has been a season ticket holder for 4 years now and am a avid follower of RU and the sport as a whole. Also the idea of being a SHP alumnus and not having any meaningful input on RU is juvenile at best

Ask yourself , what does a top 10 finish do if the ultimate result is to ruin the culture of the team for the next 4 years?

He has to graduate first which may be a Challenge as well

The evidence contradicts this.

After Jackson booted him from the team, PD3 cleared out his Twitter and Instagram accounts. All of it, not just the highly offensive stuff. Good idea -- lay low, show remorse, learn from mistakes, maybe a grad transfer is viable, right?

Yeah, that lasted less than 2 weeks, and not just on social media.

And, on the off chance his sub-zero self-discipline might improve at Rutgers, PD2 will be a mere 2.5 hr drive away to reinforce all the bad behavior.

Ultimately it won't matter. Forget wrestling: who from ISU will write him letters of recommendation? What admissions officer will approve him? What academic department will accept him? What college administrator would risk getting fired over someone with PD3's consistently erratic, violent, alcohol/drug fueled, sexually aberrant record?

And it's not as easy as "one strike and he's off the team." He's still on campus, interacting with the wrestlers and the rest of the student body. Until he does something worse. Which he will. He always has. The scorpion stings because that's all it knows.

One of the best wrestling resources we have on the interwebs is a Seton Hall grad.

No way would Downey wrestle 184 here. Gravina has that spot locked up.

Gravina tough kid but not nearly as talented a wrestler as Downey. That being said, if he does wrestle I see it at 197. He wants a title and I think he realizes his odds are better against Moore than Nickal as the top guys at those weight classes

Downey = andrew long risk-like redux. Ask if PSU or Grand View will put long in their hall of fames? Forget if PD holds it together for one year. It is not worth the current or future newspaper risk of having an alum of his volatility. Presume he will turn on us too in his tweets. Comparisons to other RU wrestlers (Campo, Lewis, etc.) are bad analogies at best.
