Pikiell at Gil St Bernard's game tonight

Just do us all a favor- Make sure you talk to your buddy, NOT directly to the high school-age girl. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You know I've broken stories (ie. Schiano's house) sale, started many a good political thread an (most providing information-not invective) had some great humerous
His son is a soph at Ridge on the JV team. He also has a younger son playing travel in BR. I've heard from folks in town who have no Rutgers affiliation, but who have become friendly with them that the Pikiell's are a great family. Nice to hear.

What's "playing travel"? I have had some "contact" with a member on the BR hoops team. Maybe I'll RUn into some more cheerleaders :>).

Also if his younger son plays for Ridge I don't think he lives in Bridgewater (did he buy Anderson's/Shea's old house?). Bridgewater residents (unless they go to private school) have to attend Bridgewater. There R town where one can send their kids elsewhere (for sports?) such as Raritan Boro but doubt Bridgewater is one of them.

Ridge High School is in Basking Ridge, which is where Pikiell lives. "Travel" is short-hand for the competitive (i.e., tryouts) pre-high school teams that many towns like Basking Ridge sponsor through their Rec departments or some other organization.

Travel is what all us suburban parents do for baseball, football, soccer and other sports. We give up our weekends and many weekdays (and lots of money)in the hopes they earn college scholarships.

Three levels of basketball in the Central Jersey town famous for its deli patronized by MILFs. Travel starts in 4th grade.

Recreation
CYO
Travel

Many kids play two of the three.

Travel basketball (or any sport) is a more competitive alternative to rec leagues, where kids have to try out, and the team travels to other towns to play, as opposed to playing only in-town rec games.

Not sure how sarcastic/true that comment is but in R crew we have a few whose kids play lots of sports and Mom and Dad spend lots of time (oft missing part or all of tailgating) Running around. To that extent (as I'll sit in my hotel room by myself at Christmas) I'm glad I don't have children!

FYI this is that I "had" growing up in Bridgewater in the 70's (graduated high school in 198)

Grade school-maybe in the 3rd or 4th grade we had recreation football "grid kid".
Don't remember much except nobody was a good QB (nobody could protect the QB)
and most was instruction. They took us to a Princeton game at Palmer for a trip.

5th-6th grade
In Middle school Bridgewater 1974-1977
1) Middle school teams for basketball and baseball. Competitive tryouts/cuts
Basketball travelled and had home games (nicely attended and some food such as soft pretzels sold) to nearby middle schools.
2) Intramurals in at least 6th-7th grades homerooms would compete against one another.
I still have nightmares about losing here due to one dumb*ass play by a friend-and kept getting beat by the top athetles at the time including a childhood friend who lived next to the school who's now AD at Marist (we had some very talented athletes in grade and HS including a world record holder but this guy to me was our best all around athlete).

3) Playground basketball-assuming lunchtime and maybe other but around 6th-7th-8th grade there would be a daily pickup game of the top "A" players. Played in that game for awhile.

High school
A) Intramurals-at LEAST in the junior and senior years Bridgewater East had intramural bowling and basketball. Bowling was run and chaperoned by one of the Senior Ennglish teachers. We'd take a bus to the Somerville Circle (approximately where The Guitar Center is now) "Bowlerama" and bowl in a league after school. Won the league on a technicality after my dbag next door neighbor (previously got in school detention after grazing him with a
punch after he bowled my gym bag down the alley) didn't have the required 4th person show up (they beat us 3 games to unofficially take the title).

High school intramural basketball was set up by the rec department. We played teams from Bridgewater East and West our Junior (our coach didn't like me and left me off team the senior year) year. In the semi final playoff game a team with 2-3 big JV players from Bridgewater West beat us so I guess players theoretically could play both on their HS team and recreation.

B) Little League then BBI (independent organization)-Our rec in baseball was 1st sponsored by the town. I played a year or two in the township rec league (maybe age 11-12) Then at about age 13? an Independent league BBI (Bridgewater Baseball Inc)
formed. From my memory pretty much all the top players played BBI.
The coaches seemingly got to pick who they wanted. It seems my team (with the exception of myself and 1-2 others) was loaded up to win that 1st year. (we lost in the late innings of the Championship game on a HR to a team sponsored by Dominick's Pizza, I believe, of Bridgewater (but on team may have been owners son of Domincks in current Clinton Township area). The team composed of all the top athletes from our then middle school class was loaded for and won the championship the 2nd year.

C) 5th-6th? grade recreation "skeeter" basketball. Only really remember the great 6th grade league. Maybe some instruction for a few weeks (vaguely remember a member of Rutgers Final 4 or close team-maybe Jeff Kleinbaum? as an instructor) but then
a DRAFT among players a few were chosen as coaches. The kids knew the best players so talent was fairly evenly divided. After 6 games 3 teams were undefeated (all had future Bridgewater East varsity players, 1-2 maybe Immaculata. I still have nightmares ab out playing the best player's team (my best friend from the 2nd grade-very talented and played varsity for 3 but too much partying ruined his and then likely recently his son's college+ careers). Also literally got bullied buy the fatest/biggest guy who later was all 2nd team? all county? for our HS football team.

Sorry-somehow typed n wrong date order.

Rutgers note-From what I remember Rutgers O-Guard Nick Sauter '76 (undefeated football team) was my (intern) 7th/8th grade gym teacher (intermediate school).

7th-8th grade school baseball. Was an A team that I believed travelled to other schools. I was on a 2nd "B" team. Don't remember travelling but remember my 1st "HR" of any sort.
