Pikiell's 1st mistake?

Greene

You don't see Baker as a PG?

The kids has the court vision, saavy, and pretty damn good basketball IQ.

The jump shot is there...he needs the S&C to make it happen playing 28-30....And I have total confidence that it happens

Rick says it best...I see we have, longer term, four known legit, big ten pieces...

PG: Baker
SG
SF: Thiam
PF: Onamuyri
C: Dourcoure

I think we add two more for sure in Mathis and Carter. Kiss and Harper could be as well, time will tell

We need ONE more class, the class of 2019 is huge

Need 2-3 more pieces from there, then in year four, we have something

I see the need for one more PF (You know I really like Dixon), one more PG (you know I like Mulchay) and one more true SG.

Also, we have Myles Johnson in the fold who is a TBD as far as what he will add

I can't say it's a mistake. It's clear Pikiell and company prioritize point guards, but have missed the guy they want. They were close on Alvarado, pushing their chips in on him, but missed. Then they prioritized Mac McClung and thought they had him as well, but it didn't work. I'm sure they're still looking, including Willis and Paul Mulcahy going forward.

Call them mistakes or gambles or whatever you want, Bullock and Mensah don't belong on this roster. My hope is Bullock departs after this year, and we get the PG (Willis) in his place. Then you only have Mensah for one more year.

I just don't understand why we haven't seen bullock at all.

There have been numerous threads and posts on this ... sigh. Take your pick:

1) In almost a year and a half he has not yet been able to pass the required conditioning test/threshold;

2) He is a tweener, a 6'3" player who is best at PF, but not such an athlete that he can play PF at just 6'3";

3) He just is not that good;

4) Who would he displace in the rotation? Certainly NOT a PG, as he is under no circumstances a PG, and not as a front court player, since he is too short.

It is not like he is a shooter (he is not), or a off the charts athlete (he is not). I have never understood the fixation on Bullock on this message board.

Sucks when schools play dirty in recruiting but I’m sure this isn’t the first time for GT. I think we get Mulcahy for 2019. I would gamble with Diego for next year unless we can get a one year grad transfer.

Corey’s game is not anywhere close to pro status here or in Europe. He needs to knock down these open jumpers and stop getting boxed out on every screen.

True, we need a point guard, but I’d still take two years of Shaq Carter over four years of MacClung.

But given where RU was when Pike took over how can you expect to find one? Need to demonstrate momentum and that RU can have success. And it worked. Would RU have got Mathis if the 2016 record was Jordanesque?.

That really is part of the debate of my real question/statement. That is really the arguement FOR keeping Vetrone/Sanders.

I don't think Bullock was a mistake, but a gamble - he was brought on to curry favor with a HS coach and potentially get a bigger fish. That bigger fish didn't pan out, but no telling what that relationship will yield in the future.

The first mistake was Souf Mensah, and that goes along with FIG's comment around a lack of a future PG. Mensah was supposed to be that backup PG and bridge us next year if Sanders were to leave early. So far, he's been a big miss, and really hasn't shown himself capable of handling the point at this level. It's causing additional strain on our trio of guards in terms of minutes, and it's a risk for next year.
Bit of a head-scratcher how the coaches missed on Mensah. Pikiell, Hobbs, and Knight are all former point guards.

Bullock was Pikiell’s 1st mistake and a doozy. Can’t afford to throw away scholarships like that. Too valuable.
Yes. Mensah is the second. Not sure yet about Myles Johnson, but redshirting BB players is often a bad sign.

But Duke is a big positive, maybe Baker.

Actually, Wisconsin makes a basketball program LIVING by red shirting post players. Sometimes post players take longer to develop (unless they are 5 stars). Having enough post player depth to red shirt a 6'11" post player may actually be a GOOD sign of program development.

Last year, Pikiell stated both Omoruyi and Thiam could have used a red shirt year, given their relative basketball inexperience, but due to a lack of player depth he could not afford to red shirt them.

Hence "often." It's not certain. I don't think we have a quarrel unless you're going to claim that redshirting is nor rarer in BB than in FB. And, yes, we've all heard that big men take longer to develop. And this may be true. But there are also one and done big men, lots of them. That is not to say that RU should be comparing its recruits to one and done players, or that Johnson is a bust because he redshirted. But BB players way less frequently require--and get--redshirts. And those who do, in the aggregate, are less likely to ultimately be impact players. Not always. But more often. So we'll see on Myles. We could sure use a low post scorer, even a limited one like Gettys. Right now Doucoure is not that. He's more effective from mid-range. And he's not as tall as Johnson. All of which is to say that if Johnson could contribute on the low post right now he'd be playing. So we can hope he's one of the big men who can develop. But redshirting in BB, in my mind, almost always raises the antenna.

Johnson had a pretty major knee injury during his junior year. I wonder if the time he missed means that his conditioning and his body might not be where it needs to be yet, and that the staff decided to redshirt him rather than give him 8 minutes per game like Sa and Doorson.

If therr are conditioning requirements that a program has and a scholarship kid doesn't meet them, what then?

I support these guys, but a lot points that Bullock will be playing somewhere else next year. A lot.

You're seeing it with Matt Bullock... the guy rides the pine.

There was a bit of a kerfuffle at Indiana over something similar this year when Archie Miller came in. He told Grant Gelon that he didn't think there was a place for him on the team (talent-wise rather than conditioning, but this sort of thing happens all over the country). Indiana University has an athlete bill of rights that prevents players from having their scholarship taken away because of performance (not sure if Rutgers has something similar). At first Gelon wanted to stay, and under their rules he could have remained a student on scholarship without being on the basketball team.

However, the message almost always gets through to the player, plus they'd rather go somewhere they can play, anyway. Gelon transferred to a JuCo and he'll probably be back in D1 at a mid-major next year. I would be shocked if Bullock comes back next year.

I haven't been sure about Alvarado based on how slight he is, but he is savvy and understands the game.....one thing that is very clear is that he appears to dominate the ball a lot in the couple of GT games I've seen (maybe because of the roster there).

I think the play in this league (B1G) will eventually display that we don't need a dominate PG that is going to be in possession of the ball each time down the court as much as a player that trusts his teammates and moves the ball.

Do I think Diego Willis is as much of an impact player as Alvarado?? I can't make that leap, but someone that saw him 3 weeks ago, pretty much sent me a message that he can play and would be a more advanced shooter than we may be thinking about. With Willis and a grinder like Mathis, we are going to be fine.

How likely is it that we land Willis?

Disagree. Redshirting big men is often a good idea. In the Wisconsin v. UVA game in the Big 10/ACC challenge the announcers noted that there were close to 10 players between the 2 teams that had redshirted. As Jelly has already noted, the Badgers make a living on doing just that.

If bullock doesn’t want to transfer out can the school transfer him to an academic scholarship, and open up a basketball scholarship. Basically tell him he’s off the team but can finish education ?

So he's Souf Mensah's mini-me who can't get to the scorer's table without running out of breath..?

I've always rooted for Bullock. I think a lot of folks wanted to see him prove the critics wrong. But in my ignorance I think of a scholarship as a kind of contract, so if a kid is not conditioning himself--and there is no good reason for this--does the kid get to maintain his scholarship?

Still have a lot of hope for Myles Johnson. Right now, he is getting himself into better shape. I think he will be a tool for the team going forward. His arms almost touch his knee standing out. Pikiell likes those guys.

And Souf was his second one, but at least that is only a 2-year mistake. (But, at the same time Baker and Decoure look like home-run recruting successes thus far).
Bullock is a two year mistake too. So you think we're gonna keep feeding him milk and cookies for four years while he naps on the bench? He couldn't even pass a damn conditioning test. He's gone and rightfully so. It's one thing if you try hard but I have no sympathy for a lazy **** on the team.

Thanks. How could you not be in shape practicing everyday, oh well.
As I mentioned before, they have a conditioning test before the season and he was the only kid on our team to fail. No room for lazy ****s so he can kindly leave and let the door hit him on the way out

Wisconsin usually red shirts a player or two--big men take longer to develop, anyway. One guy that did not red shirt for Wisconsin was Frank Kaminsky, but he took a while to develop. Freshman year, he played only 8 minutes a game and averaged under 2. Soph year, 10 minutes a game and 4 PPG. Junior year was big breakout and he is now in the NBA, averaging 11 points and rebounding well, though usually not starting. Would say he was worth waiting on. We do tend to have trigger happy posters. Must be a Jersey thing. Only spent six years there, so must not have absorbed the culture.

I will be surprised if Mensah is on this team next year. There are still plenty of games to prove me wrong, however.

Pretty clear that there is a - soon to be beyond Rutgers - future story line on Bullock that is just not yet being articulated -

Is he making himself useful in practices? more useful than a obstacle like a folding chair with a broom tied to it?

sklz-d-man-pro-portable-adjustable-basketball-trainer-0c3.jpg

OK so he is NOT seeing the court this year? guess he could get classified as having a red shirt year this year? and if - he is making sufficient academic progress, and if he is so inclined ... he could go to another program - and get to play at least 2 or maybe 3 more years - but he would have to get motivated to become a bit more svelte 6' 4" and 260lbs is no way to go through life but definitely no way to be a basketball player - unless there is a coach using "Tackles" along with centers and guards.

Would hope he has amply smelled the coffee & is looking at his involvement in college basketball as a means to obtain academic credentials & open door for the rest of his life.... because he sure is not likely to make a serious living as a player on the court.

Since Earl Duncan left I have been saying we need a top point guard. Is it a coincidence that was our last NCAA Tourney team?

Someone asked how SHU is doing it and RU not (Another thread). Look at the legit point guards SHU has had over a period of time, starting with Sha, Andre Barrett, etc. Compared to RU's PGs. And I am talking legitimate true point guards, not combo guards turned point guard (Which we seem to recruit). IMHO, Geo is not a PG at the B1G level, and I love Geo's game, but not at point.

Agreed. Having Keith Hughes, in addition to Duncan, sure didn't hurt either.
