Politi: Who would take the Rutgers job

Rutgers has as many 20 point losses this season (12) as Wake Forest and Boston College combined.

Rutgers has six losses of at least 30 points, including 39 at NW and 50 vs Purdue.

I hate Politi more than anyone, but he was spot on here.

And it really wasn't a bad column, imo. He didn't crush us like usual.

Never understand the hatred for Politi. He's doing his job. And in doing so, he's helping to put pressure on RU to do the right thing by its fans. He's the biggest, loudest advocate we have.

I have been a season ticket holder for 20+ years. I can count on one hand the number of conference games I've missed at the RAC during all of that time, but I have not been able to drag my ass to any of the last 5 conference games. And, for most of those games I tried to give away my center court seats to RU fans and had no takers. That says it all. A change has to happen or RU will playing to an empty RAC next year.

Easy to speak the truth. Making a deal with EJ to walk away is a no brainer. And it is easy to say the next coach will do a better job because outside of scandal, how could they do worse?

i also tried to give away decent seats for a couple of games and couldn't. I wouldn't go to most games if they were free (which they were since I had already paid for them).

That said I will be there for Senior day tomorrow.

Has the last 25 years taught you nothing? Things can always get worse.

Either Eddie is kept because Hobbs thinks he can get the job done, or Eddie is fired because he isn't getting the job done, or Eddie is kept because Hobbs can't evaluate him based on this year's results. It's wrong to think that ANY worthwhile AD wouldn't replace the current coach because someone else can't do better. As far as I can tell, Coach K isn't on our sidelines.

Warning - here is an article by Steve Politi that doesn't not speak well of Rutgers current situation and of our current coach. Do not read it if you are offended easily.

I'm interested to see that he's written a second article in two days. You read this and Politi seems convinced that the coaching change is a forgone conclusion.

Politi's story is fair and, above all, a realistic account of just how bad the situation is. The fans who speculate about next-coach names, while I don't blame them at all for engaging in this exercise (anything to feel a little bit better about RU MBB for a few short moments), it's largely wishful thinking and fantasizing. This place has been a career-killer for years, even when the situation was a helluva lot better than it is now. Persuading a credible coach who is willing to take this huge professional risk will indeed be Hobbs' greatest short term challenge.

Head coaches whose winning % is barely .500,should not be prime candidates for the Rutgers HC job. They would appear to be bargins.

His point is spot on. Firing Eddie is the easy part but this is a VERY DIFFICULT job regardless of the fact that it is in the Big 10. Arguably the worst Major Conference job and even beyond major conferences (meaning worse than many A-10, Big West and other jobs). At least right now, no offense intended.

It is one of the big reasons why SHU has been patient with Willard who after this year can certainly breathe easier. They just don’t see much better options.

Now having said that are there reasonable options out there that are better than Eddie Jordan? Probably. Much better, especially in a short period? I'm not so sure

And what I mean by reasonable is someone who will realistically take the job. And by short period I mean someone who can come in and make an impact very quickly.

And the argument that someone would want the job soley based on the fact they coach in an inferior conference (See Lonergan in the A-10 or Masiello in the MAAC) will not hold water, trust me. It is not that big of an argument right now at least.

For now playing in the Big 10 is an advantage in name only for Rutgers.

Sendek seems to be a decent choice if for no other reason he has experience, has won a decent amount and is currently unemployed.

If Hobbs fires Eddie than I expect him to be aggressive in hiring a new coach. I don't expect him to just write off top guys like Miller. I want him to make the phone call. If Miller is sticking true to wanting $3 million plus then ok that's probably a non-starter. But he should not be conceding to hiring a lesser known candidate. He should be selling it as an incredible opportunity in the Big Ten. Yes you can't ignore the flaming dumpster in the background but he can say we're putting out that fire and here is how we're rebuilding....practice facility, donor support, etc, etc, etc.... Sell it like Chris Ash sees the football program. Big Ten school in prime recruiting territory with a commitment to winning. I'm not saying it's an easy sales job. And I'm not saying that enthusiasm and all the great plans will mean we land a top candidate but you have to go after it.

Now if Hobbs waits on firing Eddie it will be because he sees value in waiting and thinks that we will be in a better position to sell that vision next year. I'm not talking about saving a few bucks on salary value but rather he thinks Rutgers will be in a much better position to recruit a top coach next year. That may be because the practice facilities will be further along in the process, more donors will be committed, or whatever the reasons. If you think giving away one more year will dramatically change the odds of landing a top candidate - you give away the year.

Hobbs won't wait a year.

Why? Because the pool of candidates does not improve after 2016-17. We'll likely finish last with or without Eddie next season. The job is the same job a year from now.

The facilities thing is either going to happen or it's not, and it won't be finished before the next coaching cycle anyway. Guys I prefer like Hurley and Lonergan will win and be fringe NCAA teams next season which means better options. Archie Miller will still be out of reach. Same goes for any Big East or elite A10 HC. Same goes for Amaker..

I don't think waiting a year for even the Travis Ford's of the world make sense considering Hobbs has an opportunity to lock in one of two former p5 coaches during this coaching cycle: Sendek or Greenberg, with virtually no resistance from competing schools.

I'm not saying he will wait but if he does I think that will be the rationale behind it. The job is the same this year as it will be next year but the perceived value of the job and attractiveness of the job may be better next year due to factors/influences that we are not aware of. Perhaps there will be more dollars available for salaries. Perhaps there is expected progress toward the announcement of a RAC remodeling. I'm not saying any of this is true. I'm not advocating to keep Jordan. What I'm saying is that scenarios do exist where waiting would be a justifiable decision.

The 0% retain rate in Thamel's articles shows this things already decided and the word must be out.
