Truly fair and balanced, and not a slam piece at all. Expressed some of what we've been saying, but without the (our) vitriol. Might have been out of mercy--not sure about that--but it is a solid analysis of the program. Also talked about Lovie's poor clock management at the end of the half.

He is clueless on this point:
"Well, the win-now time is over. It is abundantly clear that 2016 is all about building a foundation for 2017 and beyond. Rescigno, a decent scrambler with limited arm strength, isn't going to be the quarterback next season barring something unforeseen."

WTF? Limited arm strength? Did he see the throws across the field that none of the other QBs have made this year?

I thought we were not supposed to read politi.
Yeah, but I figured I'd take the risk. Actually been risking it for the past three years. He was riding Flood's nuts his final two years and turned out to be right. I try to look at us from an outsider's standpoint, and given that I'm an RU homer I can only resort to statistics and my own reflections of my own thoughts when other teams suck horrendously. Net-net is we are fair game, the media sometimes does us a favor, and they aren't out to get us (as I'd once thought). We just suck right now. I think they'd actually like to write some good articles about us because these copy-and-paste articles from week to week must be boring as shit to recycle. I'm sure Steve would like, at some point in his lifetime, to write a feel-good piece about a homegrown Jersey guy who made the game-winning catch against Nebraska that gives us a 6-0 record and puts us in the top 20. Or something like that.

You're right. Spot on evaluation that sounds like it came straight off of this site.
However, we still should be trying to win some games just for the team's psyche if nothing else. Odin should be getting a lot of reps and game experience too.

I am not sure why he is writing off Rescigno. His deep ball looked every bit as good as Laviano's, and that is without getting first team reps this year. The kid was just thrust into the spotlight and, in my opinion, fared admirably. For glimpses, the offense was the offense that we have been expecting all year.

If I was Mehrenger, I would move on from Laviano and give all first team reps to Rescigno and get a few series for Odin every game. With those two and Lewis coming in next year, Rutgers is going to have solid options for the next few years.

This. 100%. Gio has some balls, deep and otherwise. His reps this afternoon were probably the best single piece of QB work we've seen all season.

GIO gave me hope today that, if he starts, we might not be abysmal the rest of the season. If Laviano remains the starter, I'm done watching this year.

At the moment Gio sure does look like the best option we have at QB. I really don't know how Ash tosses Laviano the keys to the offense next week he will still be drivin the same car he's been drivin all year, three tires are bald and one is wobbly and it keeps stalling every time he starts to drive so I think its time to get another car and driver.

He was uneven passing, but CL has been uneven, at best, all year, and Gio is a much better runner, so why not start him next week? Something so many of us have been saying - several QBs can't be worse than CL as passers and are obviously better runners.

I also don't understand why he seems to be writing off Rescigno. Thought his arm strength seemed similar (at worst) to Laviano, but...he was able to hit several receivers perfectly in stride. How often does Laviano do that, even on those simple behind the line of scrimmage throws.

As a runner, Rescigno didn't look particularly fast, but he is far ahead of Laviano. Doesn't seem as tentative.

Going forward this season, it should be Gio starting with Odin getting some time each game. If a 3rd QB is needed for some reason, then you have to pick between Laviano and Allen (I'm assuming the Rettig ship has sailed). That's a tough choice, both looked equally bad against Michigan.

Good piece. Have never figured out why people hate the Ledger so much - they may embellish some, but they don't make up any of the dumb things RU ADs/coaches/players have done or said over the years. They'd all rather report on a successful team than a crappy one.

Man, you have forgotten a lot.

I'd like to know who were the people who thought it was about winning this year?!?! LOL

OK article from Politi, but I wish he would have mentioned the INT was tipped. It changes a lot.
True, but I'm not sure what video the media has. They didn't do a clear replay and not sure how much the tip re-directed the ball. It may have been tipped AND thrown behind the receiver.

Here is my take on Gio. Very good runner, has some wiggle, can put his shoulder down and get an extra yard too (that 4th down conversion speaks to that) Can make the option read better than Laviano. His big weakness is that locks onto a primary receiver, which is kind of a function in this offense- you don't have time to go through progressions. I think that every one of his passes went to his first read so you know that interception was just waiting to happen.

Really?? I don't know where to begin.. They absurdly ran an article highlighting the worst shutouts in RU history this season. Name one other local media would do that to their state university?? Thsts only the most recent crap they've pulled. You can be sure they will make a mountain out of a molehill about Mehringer's comments.

Waaaahhhh! The local media reported on RU's historical level of futility after a couple of our most futile performances ever. Maybe don't lose 136-0 and they won't run an article on how that ranks in the history of bad losses for the program. Plenty of other local media would have done the same.

Gio looked to have better arm strength than Laviano. Politi doesn't understand athletic talent.

The offense at times needs to be mixed more. Some of the short yardage play calla were horrible as ND sn as pshave been inconsiderate and us why as the times you need to have packages with the qb under center and also to have a huddle at times and not try to get cute with a hurry up style. There are times where concentration and greater awareness of field position and situation is needed. Wh we need you need 2 yards or less for a first down you don't start with the qb 7-10 yards back and lose the opportunity for some basic smash mouth football. Mixed it up a bit.....are least for this year with a muddled qb situation. It's important that every snap is perfect and not rushed etc. 'Nuff Said!

And why in God's name when we were on the Illinois 25 with 9 minutes remaining at 17-7 and playing solid football and running well was there a need to pass is beyond me....a poor snap also led to the interception. The call was a poor one and cost Rutgers the game.....period!

Amen! I saw it the same way. Gio had his flaws for sure, but given that he's had no starters reps and virtually no game experience, he looks to have a far better upside than out 4th year Jr. QB!

Completely agree. With Rescigno in there, at least there was a taste of what this offense might be with a QB who has the skill set to execute it.

Now that doesn't mean GR is going to suddenly launch this team to a good finish to this season, but when he was the one taking snaps, at least there was a bit of a feeling the offense wasn't completely stuck in neutral, (or more to the point, in reverse).

As for Laviano, I think he's tried his best and has given his all, but his time as starter should be over, finished, done. He's hit his ceiling, (in fact, has been there for a while), and no matter how much he's coached, in real game situations he continually reverts back to bad habits that result in 3-and-outs...or worse.

Time to give the keys to Gio and see what he can do with the remaining games in 2016, while, ( just as importantly), getting Odin reps whenever game situations allow.

Don't know if anyone looked at Politi's list of Rutgers 50 greatest athletes, as there was a link from that article. I remember when that was published in the S/L .. what a joke. While it is hard/impossible to compare athletes across sports, having James Bailey 38th (and ranked below Mike Dabney and Quincy Douby) and Deron Cherry as 39th is pathetic. He raves about Douby being an all-Big East player, while Jammin' James was an all-American who played in the league 9 years. In the article, Politi calls Cherry a "lockdown cornerback". Would have been nice if he did some research into Cherry, its not like Rutgers has that many football players that went to the Pro Bowl six years.
