I don't agree with Floyd sticking with one guy. He blew it when Nova was obviously hurt and did not give Laviano a chance. If the QB's are that close test them both.

both looked pretty good today. The offense had a tough time blocking the first team defense though and the QBs had guys in their face on a lot of throws. When they had time, both guys zipped it. Neither threw any head-scratcher passes. Both can zip a deep out if needed. Rettig needs to learn how to pull back once in a while and not rocket every throw. Laviano has some success fitting tight passes through windows but needs to be careful with that.
Laviano could extend plays with his feet and you can roll him out, which is a huge plus in today's game.
Rettig seems a little taller in the pocket and wants to chuck it around.

I just feel that we have nobody right now that is clearly this team's leader. Laviano has very limited experience that, IMO, means little to this equation. Many seem to think that Rettig has more to offer, but that remains to be seen in real action.
My concern is that we have a real quandary when it comes to leading the offense and that will not work.
In my exprieence(I played at Cornell) the PLAYERS probably already have a feel for who they think will be the leader and who they will support.....but no one wants to get quoted LOL

I will bet Flood has his ear to the ground.....it looks pretty close.....

So do you think Flood will make the choice once he see's a majority on this board? The gap is now a full 10% at

Rettig 49.5%
Laviano 39.5%

I would like to thank the members of the Rescigno, Dare and Clements family for participating in our vote!

Saw nothing from Laviano last year when he was in the game. Other than quick feet, his passing and decision making were suspect. Our best shot is that Rettig lives up to the hype of a national recruit and 4 star rating. If Laviano wins the job, our ceiling is 5-7 at best. We need a QB who instills fear in the heart of the opponent's d so the safeties back off and let our running game evolve. Otherwise we are screwed.
I agree 100%. All I saw with Lanviano was mostly hand offs. Go with the guy with the most potential. Laviano could not beat out Nova whom most on this board hated. So let's go with the 4 star. Flood says when picks one qb he is staying with him, I think he says this because he already knows. Like last year, I believe he was going with Nova all along.

I voted TBD and think Flood should wait until after Saturday's scrimmage. I am so amazed how anyone on here can be sure who should start. What are we going on? The handful of snaps Laviano took last year plus the spring game. Not much there.

I certainly hope that this does not factor into Flood's choice here. I hope it doesn't stop him from developing a young QB because he knows he got Russo coming in. Make Russo win the job... he can do it.. right?

Can't see this happening.

A team who plays two QB's is a team without a QB. My wish is that Flood and his assistants take a good hard look at both QB's and determine who gives us the best chance to win.

If the winner is going to the guy, and will get the time to grow into the job, then the one with biggest upside has to get the job, and that is Rettig

Why does rettig have the bigger upside?

Because I think he as more talent, a stronger arm, and has made huge strides since the spring game. I just see him getting better and better. With Floods attitude of not switching, Laviano might be more prepared now, but I don't think he will be better in the long run. Just my opinion.

Tell that to Bill Parcells
Parcells did have Simms and Hostetler in 1990.

And there have been numerous other examples.

I think what Parcell's meant with that quote is you pick one and you roll with it. Pertains to the importance of leadership responsibilities of the position. Flood adhere's to this mindset, at times to a fault.

It appears to be the opinion of most.

Rettig has better size and a bigger arm. I know a lot goes into making a QB. But size and strong arm are the most basic of the building blocks.

I've also heard that Rettig goes through progression better but I'm pretty sure only the coaches now that

Their arm strength isn't that far off where it would decide anything. Both guys can rip it.
Being a couple inches taller doesn't decide anything.

Its important to know what goes into being a good QB. Its about confidence, its about checking out of bad plays, about adjusting pass protection at the line of scrimmage, play action fakes, its about protecting the ball, pocket presence, making plays when things break down, being able to take a hit.. and more.

Lets not say that one guy has more upside than the other - because that doesn't mean anything. Nobody knows anyone else's potential, especially at QB..

Personally, I like Laviano's game better. He has a nice arm, can run if the play breaks down, and makes less mental mistakes. Ive seen Rettig play fake in the wrong direction and make wrong coverage reads. A big arm isn't enough to negate those negatives to me. Truly, we should be fine either way, both guys can get the job done.

Ya, given how tight it is, and a scrimmage just a couple days away, why not wait till after the scrimmage.

Really turns a basic run of the mill scrimmage a pressure situation for these guys. And it's good to see how they play in those spots. Then there is a full 2 weeks, then basically another scrimmage in Norfolk, for the starter to settle in before the season really begins.

Also avoids the uncomfortable situation of the backup clearly outplaying the starter.

Agree with RU-05; in that if it is this close, use Saturday to draw the line in the sand.
As I see it unless Rittig really gets "BIG" in the scrimmage I believe Chris gets the job.
WHY, nothing to do with arm strength, height, scrambling ability, completion%, yard/pass, TDs or any statistical junk but leadership, poise, motivation, seeing progressions better and team respect!
I.e. who will lead and who be appreciated (respected) by the players more.
Yes slimmest of slims in making the choice

Ok, time to set your final guess, This wont last until Next week? Gonna set the poll to lock on Monday afternoon

Theeee final bump, lrts see if we are right. Last night stats with 19 guys out not sur they are meaningful

Sticking with my Rettig pick, even tho some part of me thinks Flood will go with Laviano.

I wouldn't vote on the platoon option. Flood has said he likes going with one guy and I take him at his word (see Kent St 2012).

I voted Laviano (what I'll call the 'safe' choice because of experience and knowledge of the playbook) although everybody who has watched both play throughout the summer seems to think Rettig has more upside.

I'm hoping for Rettig, because:

  • If 2 players are even, and one has a higher ceiling and has recently "caught up" with the more experienced QB who was ahead, logic dictates you pick the guy with the higher ceiling and better trajectory as far as recent improvement is concerned.
  • It is important for the run game for the QB to be able to stretch the field, and, from all reports, Rettig represents more of a deep ball threat than Laviano.
  • Rettig has excelled in red zone opportunities in the 2 scrimmages.
That all being said, while I voted for Rettig in the poll, I have no idea what is in Flood's mind, and obviously we aren't privy to everything that the coaches are about the two candidates.
