So our 2 point fg % is drastically worse as is our foul shooting. Clearly accounting for 10 points a game. We have to start using jump stops to get under control and hit those mid range shots. Everyone will point to Derek and deservingly do but it was so so good to see Caleb hit his mid range a few times besides his huge 3 and Cam hit a few mid range shots as well. Both Caleb and Cam had a drive for a bucket in that second half as well. All the things we should be doing more of. I know it was off a rebound but Cliff actually used the glass on the layup to extend the lead to 3. He really should lay it off the backboard more often because they cannot guard or block it if he does . Trying to hit a close range shot without good touch or control of the ball leads to a lot of his misses. No need to dunk all the time just lay it off the glass. It would improve our 2 point % significantly.

Watching the replay again—. Derek Simpson matured right before our eyes last night Fearless and took over leadership last night to Will us to a win. He will be a star for the next 3 years.
And a shoutout to Oscar for giving us valuable minutes and some Beautiful 3’s

Simpson played great at home against Indiana as well.

I want to see him do it on a consistent basis. I felt during Michigan he was getting his lunch eaten (to be fair, the whole team was).

I want to see how he hands physical guards that are going to body him

What about our defensive numbers? That’s where I think we miss Mag the most!!

Ironically - defense has been mostly okay without Mag. The big wrinkle to that is depth substitution patterns.

We miss Mag’s transition play off turnovers. When Simpson plays we add some of that dimension back.

I agree. One of the things we are missing is someone with the ability and quickness to drive to the basket which he showed last night. He was making baskets underneath even against their so called bigs and even had 2 put backs. If he can do that consistently, it helps open up the game for Cam, Oscar, Cliff and. But I also saw some additional confidence in him when leaving at half time and when he got knocked to the floor. Actually Paul getting in foul trouble put more pressure on him and he handled it well in a hostile environment. Looking forward to seeing him In Minnesota game.

Would be interesting to see how our transition game both crating opportunities and finishing is before and after. Lack of transition could help explain the 2 Pt fg percentages notwithstanding a small sample size.

Think your Simpson assist number is a typo.

Simpson is our only player who can drive to the hoop and get fouled or make a tough layup. Cam drives but shys away from contact so he doesn’t make it to the FT line and also gets a lot of layups blocked. Derek absorbs the contact

Paul earlier in the year and most of last year. He was money. He’s banged up right now and I hope he can get back to that level. Simpson does it with quickness. Paul does it by faking or making passes. He did just miss a few nice drives against PSU but he’s clearly not playing like he was as recently as the MSU game. Without giving opposing teams a scouting report the reason is obvious to everyone who watches every minute of every game. Let’s not give it away. But if you watch you know what it is.

We’re resting more on Offense. A lot of late shot clocks which hurt us in the first half. Maybe we move away from that and trust the bench more instead.

Taking a look at shot production.

FGA/g Last 6 (total divided by 6 games):
10.7 - Spencer (.406)
10.3 - Omoruyi (.484)
9.8 - Hyatt (.356)
9.2 - McConnell (.345)... but 11.0/g in the 5 games he's played
6.7 - Simpson (.450)
6.2 - Mulcahy (.351)
3.2 - Palmquist (.421)
1.8 - Reiber (.364)
0.2 - Woolfolk (.000)

FGA/g 15 healthy games (total divided by 15 games):
9.3 - McConnell (.417)
9.1 - Spencer (.441)
8.9 - Omoruyi (.496)
8.5 - Hyatt (.414)
8.4 - Mulcahy (.437)
5.6 - Mag (.512)
5.3 - Simpson (.350)
1.5 - Reiber (.435)
1.0 - Woolfolk (.750)
0.7 - Palmquist (.500)

We've seen about the same number of shots (58.3/g to 58.1/g) but a drop in FG% for McConnell, Spencer, Hyatt, and especially Mulcahy.

Looking at team/opponent stats:

Last 6:
FG%: RU .399, Opp 0.438
3P%: RU .330, Opp .327
ORB: RU 8.5, Opp 7.7
TRB: RU 31.7, Opp 32.5
STL: RU 6.3, Opp 4.8
AST: RU 11.7, Opp 13.0
TOV: RU 8.8, Opp 11.0

15 Full Health Games prior to MSU:
FG%: RU .446, Opp 0.332
3P%: RU .332, Opp .332
ORB: RU 9.1, Opp 8.3
TRB: RU 34.8, Opp 30.2
STL: RU 8.5, Opp 6.3
AST: RU 16.7, Opp 12.1
TOV: RU 11.4, Opp 13.2

So, our FG% has gone down and our Opp FG% has gone up... seemingly from 2P range, as the 3P% is about the same. We're not rebounding as well, and we're seeing fewer assists (which makes sense with the lower FG%)

I like this last one. The team stats mean so much more. Some guys do things that don’t show up in the stat line ….like shut down the best players every game.

Not sure how easy it would be to do, but if you could strip out the 3-4 minute stretch where Pike has unloaded our bench (11-12ish minute mark of first halfs) I don’t think you’d see as much impact.

Obviously - these minutes are part of the game, but the disparity would demonstrate that we’re hurting most figuring out how best to rest our starters with one less rotation player.

The substitutions were much more conservative against Penn State, I thought.
