I have not had the chance to fully post mortem the last couple of games - and bactotherac and Degaz are usually ahead of me, doing a great job, before I can post a full post mortem. Thought I'd chime in here since I have the time today.

To start, though we all would have preferred a win - which would have been huge for the team and the season - there are a TON of positives to draw from this game.

1) Amongst other positives, the general positive is that this game shows that when you have 2 potential All Americans, or even All Big Ten players, you can compete with ANY team in the country. To temper this of course, ONLY Harper and Bailey were consistent offensive producers this game, and RU's bench had just 6 points total, hitting just 1-9 FG - and only GOT 9 FG attempts.

2) Another very large positive is RU's net turnover margin. Against Alabama RU forced (and yes, it was forced, not just sloppy by Alabama) 20 Alabama turnovers, while only committing 9 turnovers itself. RU is now averaging just 9 turnovers per game through 7 games ... still a small sample size, but a very positive sign , a very big deal IMO. This differential in this game was a big factor in nearly offsetting RU's very large rebounding deficit (an ongoing issue). For the season, in 7 games, RU is averaging a 4.4 per game net positive turnover margin (committing 9.1/g creating 13.6/g).

3) Of course, though everyone has commented on this - and no amount of discussion on this subject is sufficient, yet another big positive: The play of Harper and Bailey. Bailey was simply outstanding in this game (more later), but of course Harper was ... in another universe of excellence compared to every other player on both teams. In a VERY small sample size (like 2 games, back to back), Harper has been literally the best player in the country (not freshmen, but PLAYER). And on the small sample size of just 7 games, you could make the case he is one of the 3 best players in the country NOW (Johni Broome of Auburn as 1, and I am sure there is someone else in the conversation).

4) RU had improved FT shooting coming into this game, and in a small sample size of 7 games, assisted by 30-35 in this game, RU is now shooting 73.8% FT on the season. In THIS game, RU was 30-35, one of its best every FT performances in any single game (combining high quantity with high %).. But it is as consistent a theme as RU's weak-ass rebounding: RU is shooting more FT's, and at a higher make % than they have in a long, long time. Even BEFORE the Alabama game RUMADE more FT (108) than it opposition had TAKEN (83). And now, after this game RU has still MADE more FT (138) than its opposition has TAKEN (119) ... RU is averaging making almost 20 FT per game, while allowing just 11 made FT per game. Now, perhaps that is because to foul you have to actually make contact with the opposing players (i.e. play tighter defense?), but even so ... RU is objectively getting to the FT line a LOT, and is making them at a high percentage. It helps that the correct players are taking the FT's: Harper, #1 (54 FT's, 78%), but in order after Harper, RU's top FT shooters by attempts are: Derkack (70%) - 27 FT, Sommerville (80%) - 25 FT, Bailey in 5 games (78%) and Ogbole (56%) - 18 FT's each ,,, then Williams in 6 games (86%) - 14 FT's.

Now there were also negatives, no surprise. These include:

1) Rebounding - are lack thereof. This has been an ongoing concern, rightly so. And I see no full solution. Yes, things can improve - Pikiell WILL get the team improving on rebounding, I believe. But my guess is that this is one of the holes in the team that will have to be papered over, finding other elements to perform at an advantage against opponents that offset this disadvantage. Alabama particularly abused RU, 43-31 overall, but worse, with 16 offensive rebounds - almost as many as RU's 19 DEFENSIVE rebounds. That said, perhaps not a silver lining, but maybe more of a silver polka dot: RU appeared to do a bit better with its OWN offensive rebounding than in prior games (fueled by a strong effort by Ogbole), and a team effort.

2) 3-point shooting: It is very difficult to win ANY games hitting just 2 3-pointers in ANY game - let along against a good team, and especially a good offensive team (especially when that team hits 10) ... and the PERCENTAGE was bad also, at 2-13. RU was actually shooting okay coming into the game (fan angst aside): 35% - which probably would be the best RU has ever done under Pikiell, maybe its best ever, or close. RU is now shooting 33% on the year - not good, though a modest improvement over last season (a way too low hurdle). Harper and Bailey were 1-6 - and 2 or 3 were not good choices. The rest of the team was 1-7 ... and ALL were wide open, good shots that had to be taken (except MAYBE Martini's deep 3 try). But all missed. Look, it is worrying. But Derkack is GOING to hit some of those shots - he did not in this game ... Martini (0-2) is going to hit some). The problem is that Hayes got no attempts and Martini got just 2 - RU's 2 best 3-point shooters (though actually Bailey is hitting 43%, better than Martini - on the same # of tries). The problem is that Hayes has been so poor defensively the last 2-3 games the HOPE for a 3-pointer or two made cannot justify his being on the court more ... Same with Martini. Hopefully there will be games where the other team does not have such athletic front-court players as Alabama, and Martini and Hayes can match up a little better. Also, neither Martini not Hyaes can or will take (and not should they) CONTESTED 3's - unlike Bailey wh can take and make contested 3's. So their opportunities are limited to being wide open only shots - which other teams seem to be aware of.

3) Defense: So ... I know it sounds ridiculous in a game where the opposing team hit 40% from 3 and 52% overall (plus got 16 offensive rebounds), and gave up 95 points, but I actually thought RU's defense was improved versus Alabama. I thought Bailey, in particular, was vastly improved with his defensive effort and fundamentals. Harper was very solid to very goo also. Williams was very good as well (his 1st 2 fouls were totally phantom fouls, should never have been called). Even Derkack, though he sometimes gambled a bit and occasionally got burned, was very good. Ogbole had a better defensive game also. Still, Sommerville is ... to be generous, a work in progress. Martini cannot cover tall athletic players, Hayes was regularly abused. Acuff, though he did get burned a couple of times, I thought was definitely improved in defensive focus and effort. And Davis WAS better defensively as well than he had been in the prior 3 games (where he was not that good) - and Davis HAS to be good defensively to get playing time.

Players:

Harper: Words cannot express ... Amazing, fantastic, unguardable. Showed an terrific variety of shots from different places on the floor. He started the game 1-5 FG, hit 9 of the next 10 shots, ending 11-19. Plus 15-16 FT (great percentage, and all the fouls on him were legitimately real fouls). The one fly was 0-3 3-pointers, now down to 27% on the year with 29 attempts (the most on the team). We will want to see that improve to above 30%, preferably 33%. Also, he DID have a number of opportunities to pass the ball to the wing even more than he did (twice he had Bailey wide opn at the 3-point line but took it to the rim) - but tough to complain when he was MAKING almost all those shots. Plsu he DID pass the ball to the wing at least 4 times when his teammates MISSED wide open 3's - he could easily have had 3-4 more assists if his teammates had made their shots. The superlatives, even in a small sample size, are extraordinary. Please, lets not get disappointed when he "only" scores 20-22 points in a game, or heaven forfend has a bad shooting game and does worse. We ARE seeing his current ceiling: A First Team All American. His floor, remember, is still also very high.

Bailey: If not for Harper's ridiculous performance, and Harper's ridiculous back to back performances, we'd be saying "WOW" in re Bailey's game. He was excellent, in my opinion - though NOT his ceiling (he will have games where he scores and rebounds more). What I liked is that he played HARD, especially on defense. You could see the improved defensive effort: very active hands, better help defense, anticipating jumping into the passing lanes. And 22 points on 9-18 FG and 3-3 FT (just 1-3 3-pointers). And he DID take the ball to the rim on offense several times. We will see more games like this, and more points in a game before the season is over. BUT ... we will also see some games where hi misses some of those contested shots. I continue to believe the shots are not as contested as they might look to us, the fanes, because of his ability to get separation and elevation. He was getting clean shots with 6'8" to 6'10" inch athletic players in his face - still clean looks, IMO.

Williams: If anyone doubts the importance of a healthy Williams, the last 2 games show how important he is. Yes, not a 3-point shooter. But he does everything else you need from a complementary 3rd player: He can score in the mid-range hit FT, rebounds, and defend. The 1st 2 fouls called on him were IMO phantom fouls that should never have been called. And though he is not a great 3-point shooter, I would much rather have him in position to take the 3's Derkack took down the stretch: Just from an experience perspective. HE is the player with the best chance to give 10+ ppg on a consistent basis, to complement Harper and Bailey. Others on the team may end up having individual games scoring more than Williams (any of Derkack, Acuff, Sommerville, Hayes or Martini are all candidates, and have done so - except Acuff) ... but game in game out, Williams predictable and reliable FLOOR is impoertant.

Ogbole: Quite simply the best game he has played in his college career - and against multiple tall and athletic opposing post players. And he was just 2-6 FG ... though he DID hit 5-6 FT (huge shots) ... 9 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 TO - playing decent to solid defense. He does still look awkward shooting anything but an uncontested dunk or lay-up, but you can see he has the potential to improve from here - and maybe not be a star, but be a real contributor. He does have a problem covering the high screen on defense - he just is not quick enough (or maybe not know enough either yet) to know when and how to best hedge, jump or switch. I would add, his screens for Haroper on offense were truly excellent, and one reason Harper was able to penetrate so much. Definitely room to improve, but some hope given also, especially against less athletic post players.

Derkack: Sigh ... he is so aggressive (in a positive way mostly). He is athletic. he has a lot of positive aspects. But he is really struggling with his shot selection. More than any other player he takes shots he shouldn't - or misses because he is TOO aggressive and not patient enough. Well, Bailey - except Bailey takes shot OTHER players should not take but those shots are not as bad for Bailey because of Bailey's skills. By the way, even after going 309 vs Alabama, Derkack is still 14-29 from 2 point range on the year ... it is the 3-15 from 3 (and 0-3 vs Alabama) that hurts so much. He is wide open on most of those 3's - he has GOT to hit 30% of them, or stop taking them. Williams, by the way, often passes on open 3's to drive and pull up, or take floating mid-range shots, but Derkack has not shown he has the mid-range game Williams has, at least not yet. Derkack is basically a at the rim player or 3-point shooter - who misses the 3-pointers. Now, this is still a small sample size. Alabama's Darin Stevenson, after all, came into the RU game 0-17 from 3 on the season in 6 games - and hit 2-3 vs RU. So, we have time. But Derkakc probably also only played 27 minutes vs Alabama because of Williams' foul trouble. I still like Derkack and think he has a lot of potential.

Others: In one paragraph .. Acuff - I actually thought he did a lot better, gave good minutes (forced to because of Williams' fouls), did not force things, and while not a oplus defender (got burned occasionally) showed better defensive movement and focus - still a lot fo upside there for this year ... Sommerville - ugh ... became a sinkhole on offense - he has got to pass the ball out to the wing from time to time - got abused on rebounding, boxing out and defense - a LOT of potential still, a very high ceiling of double digit ppg and 4-6 rebounds and is leading RU in blocked shots, but still a learning curve ... Martini - cannot cover athletic and tall post players, WILL hit open 3-pointers though he missed his only 2 vs Alabama - a role player who will get more minuets against different match ups ... Hayes - can shoot like hell, but really abused on defense again ... Davis - I know I am in the minoriity, but I thoght he did better on defense than in the prior couple of games, and I did not have a problem with ANY of his shots vs Alabama - all good ones - but he has to start hitting some of them to get more playing time.

If Davis never takes another shot the rest of the season I will be perfectly content with that. He plays like a schizophrenic methhead on crack out there, always goes a million miles per second. They need to teach him patience and trying to slow his pace up. I will be honest, if he is completely removed from the rotation it would have no negative impacts on this team. He doesn’t do much in the way of positives when he is out there.

Outstanding recap... always a must read

Three thoughts about foul shooting (#4 above):
1) To Pike’s credit, he touted FTs as a strength preseason, and it looks like it will definitely help.
2) Lathan at 80% is a real plus for a big. Martini should be solid from there, and even Big E has a good stroke and has been improving. So FTs from our 5 position should not be a detriment, as it’s been for all Pike teams up til now.
3) Dylan getting 0 (zero) foul shots against KSU still irks me, when 40 fouls were called in that game and he took it to the rim under contact consistently. Coulda been a difference maker.

I think you have lowered the bar of expectations so low on Bailey's defense and rebounding that the few possessions where he made an impact altered your assessment of his play as a whole.

He showed improvement for sure and actually made plays/rotations on D. His defense was better than it has been all season. He did get 4 DREB (only 4 overall) which is better than 2, but still..

Fair points.

I will admit that Bailey closes on the 3-point line too slowly (a positioning thing, I am certain). And he has GOT to improve his rebounding a lot to give RU what RU needs in that area. I did not watch closely enough (nor am I likely to rewatch the game to chart it - as I sometimes do) to determine whether I can identify the rebounding issues for Bailey. Does he not box out (because either he is still out of position or because he lets his man beat him to inside position on rebounds)? Does he get pushed around physically? Or is it because he is really a WING forward, and is outside the lane mostly? Or ... is it because he is launching himself to run the court in transition on a missed shot? Or something else I cannot or would not see?

In terms of the defense: Against Alabama I saw MULTIPLE times where Bailey played the passing lanes to the player he was defending. I had NOT seen that at all in prior games. Hence, I interpret that as a more aggressive style of man defense, and an improvement (from coaching, I am sure, and Bailey listening to the coaching). He got 1 steal from that assertiveness, caused a turnover when the passer had to hold up and travelled, and got at least 2 other deflections.

If I indicated he made a true defensive impact, that is probably overstating his improvement. But ... I definitively saw real improvement. Bailey does not have to become an IMPACT defensive player to help RU a lot - merely adequate and helpful on defense, not a detriment ... in other words, a solid defender. Is he there yet? Maybe not - just 75 games into his albeit brief college career. I just wish to see improvement (and it may not be in a straight upward line).

Ace has no problems creating his own shots but I don't think we use him enough as a spot up 3 point shooter. Dylan drive and dish to Ace at the corner 3 needs to be used more considering Dylan is going to draw a crap load of double teams.

I'm surprised he doesn't take more 3s, instead settling for long 2s.

Post Mortem? Who died?
Your thoughts and opinions.

One of the guys who blasted Ogbole. You obviously don't understand how BB growth and development works for players who did not grow up playing the game. There are two parts, development and game experience.

Summer highlight clips is when we saw the time spent on development. Something he could not do last year due to injury.

Now we are are seeing growth thru game experience. Pikiell is now letting him play thru mistakes and stay on the floor. He will absolutely still have games and stretches where he still looks bad but each bit of game experience will continue to help him.

this. we did in late in the second half but we have to create some easier shots for ace as a standstill shooter. he’s the best shooter on the team , 3 point percentage wise.

Ace is only 5 games into his college career, after missing our first 2 games due to injury.

His rebounds have been 6, 10, 1, 4, and 4. The 1 rebound against KSU is unforgivable. Since then we’ve played our two toughest opponents and he’s had 4 rebounds against each, still not great but showing potential.

The guy averaged 16 rebounds per game his senior year of HS, and he’s only played 5 meaningful games since then. He’ll figure it out.

personally i think it's a physicality issue more than anything. small part of a "want to" but as you said in your recap then want to when he doesn't have the ball in his hands is greatly improving.

he'll be more than fine imo. he's just standing next to one of the most complete freshman i can remember in college (still need to pinch myself that he plays for RU).

Good offense generates FTs, open looks and avoids turnovers.

Right now, if the turnover number stays below 10, RU becomes a live team against anyone.

I will rewind back to 1 and 2 years ago and only mention that taking 3s is cool BUT when RU missed 3s, they usually lost against equal or better competition (especially in B1G play).

While defense is actually a concern, rebounding is a concern, you can overcome that, if you make FTs and can get to the line.

We shot 2-12 from 3 before the Harper heave at the buzzer, which counts, but we had some solid looks. Derkack had a 3 that was wide open, Martini had a couple that were rushed.

If I can add, I am actually not concerned about the 3s.....or the number of 3s....

The main concern are empty possessions.....3 possessions ended with JMike attacking the basket and attempting a difficult layup.....

I am assuming the defense gets better, not worse. I am also assuming that we "might" see more lineup changes. It is trending towards 2 paths for success.

A) Hayes and Martini get better and more used to what it takes to study film....why am I mentioning studying tape?? Because it's the one advantage that players can have to play better defense.....

Learn your opponents tendencies....study their moves and where they like to score from. I am not taking away from the talent or drive of Caleb McConnell, he had more "want to", than any player in recent memory.....but he was also a player who battled through bad back, injured feet, knee etc....and he was not an elite athlete.

Hayes and Martini are relatively healthy....Sommerville is healthy....they have to dedicate themselves to making sure they can get every advantage on defense to improve.....

OR B

We plug in Grant at the forward for Hayes and Martini and let him be the 4th or 5th scoring option.....if Ogbole can score 8PPG as the 5th option on offense, so can Grant in Hayes or Martini minutes.

We can expand Hayes and Martini roles IF they have the drive to want to improve on defense, as much as they can or want to shoot 3s.....3s are EARNED, by staying on the court and becoming serviceable on defense. Then as you improve on defense, the staff trusts you more to make fewer mistakes and you can get scoring opportunities.

It is very difficult for fans to ask for "getting shot attempts for Hayes".....Hayes is a much better player and shooter than Gavin Griffiths last year, but the stakes are higher this year.

If Gavin couldn't find minutes, when RU was struggling to score last year, how do we justify playing Hayes and Martini, when we now have scoring options that can get to the FT line?? Why do we need to cry about 3s, when we can score with quality 2s, layups, dunks or FTS?? 3s arent a requirement unless you cannot drive and score/draw fouls....we can do that now, when we couldnt the last 2 years (Mag, Hyatt etc didnt drive enough to get FTs at the pace Derkack can).

It (to me) would make more sense to put the best defensive players on the court with Dylan and Ace.....right now the other 2 locks on defense are Jwill and Derkack. JWill and Derkack can score around 10 PPG, which is fine, even without any 3s.....if they hit 3s, that goes to 14PPG in some games, because they're getting to the FT line.

I would play Dylan Grant and let him get his feet wet.....he is the missing athlete up front that closes the defense and rebounding concerns. He HAS to start pushing for minutes sooner than later.

If Pike thought Grant could help with defense and rebounding, he'd be out there. All Pike thinks about is defense.

Good recap and highlighting the positives and negatives. But Dylan ‘s supernatural performance and Ace’s best game versus competition , ends with a win even with the 2-13 from 3 and the lack of defensive rebounding , if some simple fundamental things happen
. One was in the first half , when Zack is inserted into the game and he proceeds to miss a wide open 3, then misses a layup , the easiest one he will have when getting fouled, barely touched , and then proceeds to miss 2 foul shots. Finally , he has a rebound loses it and has to go to the floor, and they get the tie - up , we retain possession with less than 2 minutes in the half , but Alabama then gets ball to start the half , costing us another possession. All simple fundamental plays and we get 0 points from Zack.
Also in first half , JMike did it again driving into trees and getting stuffed , not looking to pass out ever. Cost us points. We should have been up 5 at the half and instead were tied at 41-41.

Now , we switch to what I believe was the most critical play of the game., in the second half. Teams were trading blows , tied from 41-41 at the half , to like 53 all and momentum starts to shift to RU as Dylan is unstoppable , Jeremiah hitting shots , we briefly take a 5 point lead , which they cut back to 2. Then the play , when we were either tied or up 2 , when Jordan goes to the hole with a clear uncontested lane , he attempts to dunk the ball instead of just laying it in off the glass , his miss results in a breakout for Bama and Sears hits an uncontested 3 in transition. A 5 point swing and we were either down 3 and never got the lead back the rest of the game. Jordan missed 2 dunks against Notre Dame , got fouled on one, but again, had 4 easy points and Notre Dame came down and scored and a huge momentum swing. He then drove into the trees and into Nelson and threw up and terrible shot that was a costly lost possession. I will not even mention Jordan’s missed 3 , wide open 3 , down 91-88 that would have tied the game , because sometimes shots go down.

I am talking about fundamental easy , relatively , that cost us the game from our role players. Jordan ends with 6 points that should have been 8-10 , Zack ends with 0 points when it should have been 3-6 points and JMike ends with 0 points that could have been 2 or better yet maybe 2 assists.

Another huge impact on the game.
Jeremiah getting in foul trouble and eventually fouling out , when he already had 10 points and was becoming our third option and scorer on the game , hurt us tremendously on offense . It also hurt tremendously on defense as he could have neutralized Sears better with his quickness and length. Huge loss in the game.

One last thought . Acuff was getting beaten badly as Bama ‘s guards got by him for 4-6 layups but Pike found time for him hoping for some offense from him or a threat of offense. However , I think Pike should have found a way to get PJ in the game in the second half , despite his defense , because with all the fouls there were a lot of offensive / defensive substitutions spots and he never got him back in the game. We ended 2-13 with Ace’s three cutting it to 3 late. If PJ is in and hits 1 at any point in second half , it likely changes the outcome , and if he hits 2 , we most likely win that game. PJ taking that 3 instead of Jordan and we are likely tied at 91. We cannot afford to have PJ scoring 0 points but worse yet getting 0 shots. Getting 0 from PJ and Zack was also an underated cause of the defeat. One caused by Zack and the other I think Pike has to do a better job with the subs.

Maybe he doesn’t want to put him into pressure situations. I was at 2 practices in October. Dylan Grant more than held his own , won player of the week once , can play defense , but from what I saw , he moved without the ball and ACE kept finding him for dunks when he did. Suprised to date we have not seen him. But Pike is overwhelmed with the options on this roster so somewhat understandable

Number 2 will be a consistent positive through out the season with the length of this team showing with hands in the passing lanes,
Ace’s ability here will continue to grow and be impactful especially with over the top passing into the paint.
Love Jordan, just think he comes up a little short, hopefully he gets just a little better.
Jwill is crucial

I agree with everything you say here.

BUT,

I really think Ace COULD become a lockdown, fearsome defender if he really wanted to. He has the sort of length and athleticism that would make it a horror show for opposing offenses on the wing trying to pass around or shoot over. That play in the first half against Bama when he reached his long arm and deflected a perimeter pass and then raced down the floor for the dunk is the sort of thing I’m talking about.

I’m also thinking about how effective he could be at the top of a 1-2-2 full court press (something Pike hasn’t shown yet).

However, I realize we shouldn’t really expect Ace to become Caleb 2.0, as he’s needed more on offense, and we don’t want to tire him out too much on defense. I’m just saying he has the capability.

Hawk - no matter how much you try to talk yourself (and us) into thinking we can win games consistently without 3-pointers, it’s just not practical to think this way.

We will not, repeat NOT, win many games if we’re only able to hit 4 or 5 threes each game — let alone only hitting 2. Free throws are great, but we just had an historic night shooting free throws (30-35) on a night when Dylan had an historic 37-point outburst, and we still lost the game.

No major analysis needed here. In today’s game of college basketball, the winning teams are hitting 6 to 10 or more threes every game. This tells me a few things about our team:

- Ace needs to take threes instead of multiple deep twos each game

- Dylan needs to hit threes at a better than 27% clip

- WE NEED TO FIND THREES FOR PJ HAYES AND ZACH MARTINI. Pike will need to “massage” the rotations in order to cajole these guys to play and hit threes without them hurting us on defense too much.

- the ancillary shooters (Acuff, JWill, Derkack) need to hit a better percentage of the threes that they’re already taking.

- nobody else (JMike, Sommerville, and certainly Ogbole) should EVER take a three unless the shot clock is at 3 or below.

Bottom line even with increased scoring Rutgers has a very small margin for error because of poor rebounding/defense and the lack of 3 point scoring.Bailey and Harper could have games where they only score 30-40 points which would then favor the opponent to win .

Degaz, excellent points. We need Martini and Hayes in there for their abilities to hit threes. If that means Pike needs to play more zone when they’re in there so be it. There is no reason to not hit 6-8?threes per game. None.

Missing from the offense is a pick and roll game between Dylan and a Center. Likely not to happen with Ogbole. Maybe will happen with Somerville.

As for interior defense, I thought our players did a fairly good job against a team with many athletic bigs. Indeed, I consider giving up 15 points to Bama’s Grant Nelson (big white forward) a moral victory. He was dominate against a very physical tough Houston team.

You bring up LS's potential, but for a frosh big, I think you're much too harsh: "ugh, sinkhole, abused" in one sentence about current play. He didn't come is a part of a Super Trio w. Ace and Dylan. He's contributing: 4 boards per 20 mins., 50% from field, 80% from FT, leading team in blocks. There are positives to his game right now.

RU runs the pick and roll with Harper and the center often. But Harper gets downhill towards the rim so well - and quickly - you do not necessarily want the center clogging up the lane after the screen ... so kind of a pick and ongoing screen (i.e. the center, if Ogbole, drifts down the lane maintaining the screen - or Harper beats him to the rim) ... or if Martini at center, the pick and pop (Martini flaring to the 3-point line).

Zebnatto: I do not disagree with your general thoughts on Sommerville - Sommerville also leads RU in blocked shots, FYI. There are plenty of positives, and he has a very high ceiling I think. But his general defense is ... not even "meh." Meh would be an uptick. He WILL get minutes, he WILL have some excellent games this season, I am confident, there will be plenty of games he has more minutes than Ogbole. But he also has a long way to go defensively.

Or pick and roll with Ace. Would have so many possibilities

Maybe. I watch the games, make observations, but in all honesty don’t remember half of the a day later (Boomer here). but we can break his or EO’s (or CO’s) D responsibilities down: 1) post D matchup against opposing five; 2) hedge and recovery on high screen; 3) defensive rebounding; 4) off ball D—where Cliff and most Bigs gets most f his blocks; 5) awareness and anticipation on guard penetration towards basket. Would you assess him as Defensively weak in all five? Me? 1) not a real problem but you may just be more observant than me; 2) I’d give him a good grade grade and think he is really working very hard at it; 3) strong; 4) strong and he hasn’t left his man for easy put backs, good anticipation and decision making; 5) weakest area but not surprising for a freshman five.

Offensively, once he understands his options better atop the gifts he already has, he will be a REALLY STRONG force.
