Still early but thought it might be interesting to think of some names that could help with offense/recruiting moving forward in the event any of our guys get promotions or move elsewhere. Some good options might be out there who have East Coast ties and fit our needs. Feel free to throw out any other names:

Matt Brady, Maryland: From South Jersey, nicknamed the "shot doctor", might need a new gig with Turgeon gone; https://www.baltimoresun.com/sports...0211124-ubknachy2zattadsevpieip7my-story.html

Keith Urgo, Fordham: DC native who played at Fairfield and has extensive high level experience at Villanova and Penn State. Stud recruiter who is first assistant at Fordham but should really be coaching at a P5 school. https://victorybellrings.com/2021/04/16/ex-psu-basketball-coach-keith-urgo-fordhams-pat-chambers/

Matt Abdelmassih, Nebraska: Stud recruiter at a program which seems likely to make a change at HC (or at least should). Previously at St. John's and was named the top transfer recruiter in the country by ESPN when they brought in Figueroa & co. Not sure if the recruiting rumors at Nebraska would make him less likely to get hired here.

Mike Pegues, Louisville: Another DC native who played at UDel and is now the Louisville interim HC. Big man specialist who has basically followed Chris Mack over the years. If Mack is unemployed, he could be a good option to fill the Jay Young role and develop Cliff and Dean/build some inroads in Maryland territory.

Tray Woodall, Fordham: Another Fordham coach with significant connections to NJ and RU. Played for Bob Hurley at St. Anthony's and played for Brandin Knight at Pitt. Was an assistant at St. Bonaventure where they always seem to overachieve and find/develop diamonds in the rough.

Brett MacConnell, Princeton: Obvious connections to NJ and Rutgers. Regarded as an up-and-comer and was on our hot board previously.

Bryan Dougher, Fairfield: Don't think we'd look to poach him from Young but obviously very familiar with Pike and the program.

Not happening unless Knight or Hobbs get another job..

The St John's or current Nebraska assistant
Matt Abdelmassih is 99.9% going to be landing on the NCAA list for recruiting violations

I said it when Hayn was promoted and I'll say it again.

Who is the top uncommitted guy for 2023 or 2024?
Hire his uncle, HS coach, AAU coach.

If we end up with 2 openings then go to the next highest uncommited guy - rinse/repeat.

Everyone says "we need a coach with recruiting connections". Okay. Then get someone with great connections to a player instead of mediocre connections to many players (who are most likely not to come here).

A assistant coach with prior experience instructing front court players should be a priority. The current coaching staff were all guards in college.

And they've done a terrible job developing Cliff and Reiber.
No mention of Johnson who was at Rutgers 4 years and showed very litle inprovement on offense.Cliff was a highly rated recruit who is very athletic and a great dunker I'm pretty sure Reiber had the skillset for the 3 point shot prior coming to Rutgers.Young who now is the head coach at Fairfield was the best assistant coach for front court players.Yes, any assistant coach can instruct front court players but its the actual experience of being a center or power forward that enhances the overall resume and the ability to share prior experiences with the players.

Are you suggesting the players don't need coaches because they are useless? 😁

At most schools recruiting is a major responsibility for assistant coaches. They are also assigned other duties during practice and preparing scouting plans for future oponents ..As for instruction I don't think the entire coaching staff should all be former guards.I don't see what is so complicated about this discussion. Its a opinion and has nothing to do with assistant coaches being useless which is a ridiculous comment.

Jay Young was recognized as a really good big man coach. Not sure if he even played CBB but it would not have been as a big man. Good Coaches can Coach regardless of who they are coaching.....guards, wings or Bigs.

What is hilarious is your signature says exactly the opposite.

Shit!!!
Wait - I got this.

The exception is a direct connection - like HC Williard did at Seton Hall in 2016.
If you hire AAU Coach X it will bring player Y.
Small scale. Assistant coaches only.

The large scale nebulous "Only HC Y can deliver the top NJ players" is bogus has been proven wrong year over year.

I think that works.....

Looks like the only two available from the original list are Abdelmassih and MacConnell. Have to think Brett gets the first offer at least.

Interesting to see Pegues is at Butler with the Fernandes battle going on (although I’m not sure if he’s be his recruiter given his specialty)

Outside the box - since the new guy is going to be #3 behind Knight and Thompson
Connor McCaffery - Fran's son - he spent 6 years at Iowa as a player and was a high-IQ player
Get some of that Iowa offensive movement and efficiency - they were the #4 offense by KenPom last season - pair that with Rutgers defense and wow!

If he wants to break into coaching I would think it would be under his father.

Problem is you aren’t watching them past mid March.
I'd rather watch them than most of the teams I saw in the NCAA tournament.
It works the other way too, If I were McCaffery and I could hire a Rutgers asst/player, I'd jump at the chance.
