According to Dan Duggan in this mornings Star Ledger, Ash has spent the
last two years a Ohio States's co-defensive coordinator.
It also states Ash says he was ready to come to Rutgers and leave
Ohio State immediately, but Myers asked him to stay, and he felt
he owed it to Myers. Why couldn't the other co-defensive coordinator
and GS handle it.?

He probably felt indebted to Meyer and his defensive players to finish off the season with the bowl game. He said he also saw other coaches on the Meyer tree that went on to head coaching jobs but finished off the bowl season with Meyer. Also, even though he is listed as co-coordinator, lots of people say that Ash really called the shots on defense, over Luke Fickell

Luke Fickell is a fixture at Ohio State, but does not bring the press/attack mentality Meyer wanted for his Defense. That's why he brought in Ash in the first place. Meyer truly respects Fickell, more because of his team first mentality than anything else. That will be tested with the Schiano hire. But, Schiano can't just come in from day one, gain trust and respect, while at the same time prepare the team for a Bowl game. That is why Ash is still with Ohio State.

Does the head coach have to give his ok for any coach on his staff to talk to another team about a head coaching position. Maybe that was the trade off that he gives him the go ahead, to check out other opportunities, but if he was picked that he has to finish to the bowl season. I'm just asking.

I don't think so. It's a promotion, I don't think you can stand in the way even in the NFL for "true" promotions. It's only when you finagle around with titles and try to make something look like a promotion that really isn't does something arise but going from coordinator to HC is a promotion and no one can block that. I'm sure he'd ask Meyer's advice and all that but Meyer can't stop him regardless.

It varies from coach to coach. I saw Mack Brown say he preferred his coaches to go right away, so it all depends on the HC. Meyer seems to want his guys to stick around and as a professional courtesy/friendship his assistants will because they know they owe him for getting opportunities. Besides no one would want to burn bridges and go when asked to stay.

Because he is a very good coach, the kids respond well to him, and he is loyal.

Exactly. From everything I've read and OSU fans have stated, Fickell was as much a co-coordinator as Flood was for us in the late '00s. In both cases, it sounds like it was set up that way for salary purposes.

I don't know anything about Flood in the 00's, but everything stated here is pretty much spot on.

I would love to see Mike Vrabel former Patriot and currently on the staff of the Texans get the job. If you watched him on the HBO training camp show, he showed great promise as a coach. Young, charismatic and comes from the Patriots organization. I think he would be a good out of the box hire.

Only issue with Vrabel is that he would not be able to come on board until after the Patriot season is over. It could be very late.

I like that he will get to see all of the bowl game prep and getting the players ready to play! This will give him valuable insight when we are making bowl games every year

Here's a little tidbit I can offer on Vrabel...He just got to Houston (former DL Coach for OSU) and I know he has kids getting ready to enter Jr./High School. He just got them settled in.

I met Vrabel one time at a Baseball Tourney in Michigan. Really cool guy and he's really into baseball. His son is actually pretty good, and the baseball played in Texas is some of the best in the Nation. He may not want to take that away from his son. He never said anything like that to me, but it's just something i'm sure he would keep in mind IF he looked for a new gig...
