Quinerly Decommits from Arizona

Isn't the FBI report saying he took the money? I didn't read the whole thing.
The FBI report doesn't name him but it looks like he might be who they mean:
>How do we know it's Quinerly? The document reported that Richardson took a total of $20,000 in bribes and gave most of it to a "top point guard" who committed “around three days” before Aug. 11. Quinerly, a five-star point guard, announced on ESPNU on Aug. 8 that he would play for to Arizona.<
This is in same article: >While Richardson spoke of directing two current players to the agent, there is no suggestion those players have received any money from him or an agent.<

What if JQ and his family did not receive any money?

Good point— the compensation could have taken many forms— jobs for family members, cars, trips. The FBI is involved; they’ll connect the dots and it will be interesting to see how this plays out legally, especially for the players & families.

Ok, let me rephrase: What if JQ and his family did not receive any impermissible benefits?

Just a waste of a thread. JQ is not considering Rutgers. The Hudson Catholic program has zero respect for Rutgers. One of their assistant coaches is really in these kids ears alot and he HATES rutgers. and I mean HATES. and he doesn't even have a reason too but all the asshole does is talk shit about RU

Most people I know who incessantly talk "shit" about RU didn't get into RU. Especially prior to the merging of the schools, when there were 11 or so different colleges, and you could apply to 3 max, and each had their own admission standards. I know so many kids - like myself (ended up in Engineering elsewhere, but RU was right lol!!...) - who didn't initially get into Rutgers College OR the College of Engineering, but didn't apply to a 3rd option they easily would have made, and hate RU to this day because of it. All Jersey kids, many ended up at "rival" schools, and all talk shit incessantly.

(** obviously, as a son of an alum and with lots of family at the school, I never turned into one of those asshats lol...)

I'm a third option baby. I owe my success to Livingston College and the admissions office. (And the "old D policy")

Bribes are not gifts. The feds are out to prove these transfers were indeed bribles and if successful these are taxable events.

That's the whole point...and that's not an easy one to prove at all.

That is why CI's wear wires and phones are tapped. Feds hate to lose and be embarrassed and would not move forward unless their case is reasonably solid. And the Judge Ito's on the Federal Bench are few and far between so do not expect OJ type shenanigans or UNC's don't bother us defense to prevail.

Then you file a gift tax return and it comes of your estate

No Tax due

To be a bribe, you must be bribing a public servant or in a limited commercial context, neither of which applies here. The money to the athlete is a gift and it is not subject to income tax. It would only be subject to Federal gift tax if the donor exceeded his annual exclusion ($14,000 per recipient) and used up his entire Federal gift tax exemption ($5.49M).

The bribe charges involving the assistants have nothing to do with the money going to the athlete. The money that the assistant coach accepts is the bribe

The bribes were also to players. "The documents allege a $15,000 bribe from Richardson to Player-5, who "verbally committed to attending" Arizona "on or about August 9, 2017". If it was just a gift no strings would be attached (i.e. no commitment from player would be required).

That’s not what the document says. It says that Richardson took the bribe money given to him and gave a portion of it to player 5. It’s not a bribe of the player under criminal law, just a violation of ncaa rules.

That’s why assistants were arrested and not the players.

If the program moves in the direction I think it will, these coaches' opinions of Rutgers will become much less of a factor. It's easy to talk shit about a perennial loser you have some personal issues with. But put a competitive B1G team in their backyard and see how fast they change their tune.
