Rapid Reaction — Georgetown

Rotation we only had 9 guys dressed tonight
I don’t like the fact he has Gavin on such a short leash now is the time to play him
Cliff is Cliff that’s all one can say has no basketball IQ and of course no hands and zero post moves
Our offense runs better with Woolf at the 5.

I will die on this bridge. His mid range shots without having a hand in his face and his rising up for an uncontested shot should be taken 10 times a game if available. We haven’t had a guard score 20 points in a game since Geo was on a roll. Derek is capable of 15-20 a night and if he gets his shot , uncontested , , I want him taking it. I however,, do not want him to shoot too much when we are not there for offensive rebounds or if he is forcing it and is off balance. But if he does a crossover , leaves his man behind , then he should be shooting it !!

You cannot cite statistics from last year to discuss his shooting this year. He hardly was a factor last year until the last 7 games and he took too many wild shots last year. But he has spent all summer in the gym perfecting his mid range jumper and that was what the coaching staff was raving about and expecting a big jump this sophomore year. Derek’s positive progression and improved shooting his mid range shot will go a long way to getting us back to the dance. The staff is expecting a lot out of him.

Yes our guards all have to do a better job getting Cliff the ball especially out on the break.
I'm with you. Derek can take his man into the lane whenever he wants. He's got to keep taking those shots.

All summer perfecting the midrange? I know it's only 4 games but he's at 27% THIS year.

His 1st 3 mid range
15 ft - ugly BRICK
15 ft - brick
Almost 20ft - make (his left back heel might have been grazing the 3pt line).

Cliff plays Edey as well as any player on the country and shows up offensively as well. He doesn’t have Dickinson ‘s moves or craftiness and he has worse hands than both of them . He is still a force and with better guard play he can once again consistently score in double figures and be the leader of our offense.
Just an FYI, the last time we played Purdue, we triple teamed Edey every time he touched the ball, so Pike clearly didn’t think Cliff could guard him without lots of help.

Cliff's defense is pretty good away from the basket. On the block it's pretty horrible - needs help.

Keep on watching it get better every game and more importantly we need that offense from Derek. What are you missing? You want him not to shoot , not to drive to the hole , and only shoot 3’s ? Are you kidding me ?

That is called a game plan you dolt . Pike took a chance the freshman guards could not knock down jumpers to beat us. He was right. He , Cliff and Mag, neutralized Edey , and won the game. Cliff has played Edey well the prior year including the dunk that put Edey on a poster.

That was not the last game we played against Purdue. The last game was in the Big 10 playoffs, which we lost because Mason Gillis and David Jenkins were wide open when everyone was try to collapse on Edey.

Furthermore, the game you are referencing earlier in the season, Edey missed some time in the first half with a couple ticky tack fouls, but when they were on the court together, Edey throughly dominated Cliff. Rutgers won that game not because they did well against Edey, but because his teammates didn’t show up that night.

You said he was perfecting it over the summer. I'll keep an eye out for it to get better every game.

Drive to the hole, shots in the key and some 3's. Last year we had no speed at the guard position so we had to live with Simpson's inefficient shots. We don't need Simpson jacking up mid range shots this year. We have so much more speed at the guard position this year.

Edey was the national player of the year and no one can guard him. Cliff did as good of a job as anyone

Cliff rarely gets the ball delivered where he can do anything.
And when the double comes he is not good at finding an open man.
I bet cliff is missing that guy with the headband.

We were terrible last

cliff is limited offensively and needs to work harder at getting better position lower in the block. Last year he allowed himself to get pushed out way too far. It’s early the guys will figure it out. I miss Caleb too

Gillis was either 8-8 or 8-9 from 3 that night , clearly an aberration , but the point was Cliff plays Edey as well as you can. Edey will get his against anyone every night. Pike’s game plan was sound because the freshman for Purdue were hitting a wall , as they showed against FDU , and just got unlucky with Gillis having a career night

How did he look last night at all 3 levels and at the foul line ? Did your statistics from last year play out ? No , I didn’t think so. Was Derek efficient enough for you ?

Goru7,

2 for 4 from midrange. 1 make was an UGLY bank from straight on from 15 feet. He should not be shooting 2's over 14 feet.

He was able to get to the hole and got layups or foul shots. 14 feet and in or a 3 pointer. With his ability to get to the hole, there is no need for the inefficient mid range. Geo wasn't as strong getting to the hole compared to Simpson.

He is 7 for 19 on 2 point jumpers. That is 36.8 percent. That's the equivalent of a 25% 3 point shooter.

I love how you won't give up despite him not shooting it at a good percentage and the analytics saying it's a bad shot. Data be damned. Lol.

Screw the analytics. How efficient was he yesterday when everything was clicking. You think he made those threes all of a sudden or because he had built up the confidence that he could get his shot at anytime and can elevate into his 2 point shot. He was in a nice shooting zone yesterday and that helped him hit those threes. What I do not want to happen is for him to start jacking up 3’s in a game and finish 1-8 in a close game when he could have gone 4-8 from 2 and we would have won the game. He and the coaching staff have been very vocal that his breakdown and mid range game will be his think primary shot this year and he is working on perfecting it . I Think I will take 5-9 from 2 , 1-2 from 3 and 6 foul shots a game or 19 points a night. I do not want 2-3 from 2, 2-9 from 3 and 2-4 foul shots because he is jacking threes and not driving , which is 12-14 points . This is subtle nuanced point and I hope you get it and put the analytics hammer away.

I also think you are missing how shooters get on a roll. It is not from jacking up 3’s but getting into a rhythm and shooting when Pike calls a play for him or if he is trying to breakdown his man and get to his spots. Derek is not going to become a 40% three point shooter in my opinion . But I can see him becoming a 45-50% 2 point shooter with his midrange and drives to the basket. Those are damn important consistent points that also likely stop a drought or stop a team from going on a run. He jacks up 2-3 threes and misses and the other team comes down and converts , it is a 6-9 point run we have to overcome . This is so much more than just the analytics but the flow of the game and the essence of basketball. It is not as simple as you are making it out to be.

With the way he shots the mid range shots, he just needs to be a 26% 3 point shooter.

50% from midrange = 33% from 3
He hasn't and isn't shooting 50% from midrange.

The team needed someone who could get their shot off last year so we had to live with bad shots. We're faster this year and don't need the least efficient shot there is.

We are 185 in offensive efficiency this year. We were 189 last year. Our defensive efficiency was 5 last year. I don't think we will finish at that level this year (currently 23rd).

If we want to go to the tourney, the offensive efficiency will need to improve. "screwing the analytics" is not a recipe for the tourney.

If you want to talk analytics, you should know that it's wayyyy too small of a sample size this season to take any shooting percentage seriously

He shot 22% last year from 3... again need larger sample sizes this season. If he can become at least a decent 3 point shooter, that would be absolutely massive. If he ends up shooting a similar number this season, do you really want him shooting 3's? Did you want Caleb shooting 3's when he was shooting in the 20% range from 3? Probably not

It is not equivalent. If Derek makes 2 threes a night it will be highly unlikely, and although it happened the other night , I would not count on it . You want him to shoot 10 threes a night to get those 2 . That is 6 points. If he takes 11 shots but 8 two point shots and hits 4 between his mid range and drives of his 2 point shots that is 8 points and 1 of 3 of his three point shots that is 11 points. Plus it is more likely Derek goes 7-9 from 2 point range than make 3 of 9 from 3. He is not Cam and he is not Gavin.
Let me make this very clear. Derek getting 14-18 points a game is crucial to this team having success this year and back to the tourney. Derek trying to become a three point shooter , which he is not , is not doing what he is good at and will help the team the most . Derek has the best chance to get 14-18 playing his game.

Derek hasn't made 3 mid range shots in a game this year yet. I haven't said anything about how many 3 point shots Derek should take. He hasn't shown that he can shoot the 3 yet. The last game was likely his best game, in his RU career, from 3.

With our pace and ability, this team needs to reduce the number of bad shots. Our margin for success/failure is razor thin.

Last year, Paul was a mess, Caleb was a mess, cam couldn't create on his own and mag was out. Derek was basically the only guy who could create a shot. This year we need him to be more efficient.

I agree with ur football posts. Your bball posts...not so much.

Thank you for the football post props.
Believe me you will come around. Sample size is small. Let’s revisit in 10 games by January 15 at which time we will know if Derek plays the way I suggest and his 2 point game leads us to victories or whether his failure to step back behind the 3 point line has cost us some games. Now I doubt Derek gets here this year but it would be great if he shot the 3 pointer considerably better combined with high 2 point efficiency , then we will have an All BIG guard and we would be highly successful as a team.
