1. Derek Simpson was the MVP tonight, with a career high 23 points (with 4 assists), but more importantly, he provided key buckets in the first half when nobody else was scoring, including that dagger three at the halftime buzzer. This is now three really good games in a row for Simpson, who has now taken control of this offense.

2. The full court press with two of our small, quick guards continues to be effective. We got some steals tonight and also a 10-second violation.

3. Tremendous response from the team after Howard cut the lead to 5 points in the second half. We came out of a timeout and ripped off 8 straight points and then continued to put defensive pressure on the Bisons, eventually ballooning the lead to 20+.

4. Cliff was dominant tonight on defense. He blocked several shots, changed several others, and generally made life hell for Howard in the paint. He also had 15 points and 14 rebounds.

5. Aundre Hyatt had a quiet, but important 12 points. He had just 3 points at halftime, but he got some early second half buckets in the post and then a dagger three that pushed the lead to double digits. This is now four games in a row for Hyatt in double digits. Consistency.

6. Gavin continues to struggle from the field, but he didn’t let his shooting woes affect the rest of his game. He had 3 assists and he went to the hole, including on that baseline drive and dunk that electrified the crowd. Good to see he can contribute even while he’s finding his sea legs.

7. Another solid game from Fernandes, with 12 points (including two critical threes) and 3 assists, along with pesky defense, especially in the full court press.

8. The second half is “proof of concept” if Dylan is waiting to see what our new offense looks like. We got out and ran constantly, and we got early offense, rarely letting the shot clock below 5. Three small guards who are all quick and have good handles makes for some fun basketball.

Press is a must. Don't need to gamble. Just slow them down.

Great game by Simpson. 2-4 from midrange, lucky either brick went in. Great penetration from him all game. Layup or 2 foul shots for a great foul shooter.

Wolf with 2 great dribble drives. Very impressive.

I like how everyone was taking the shot if they had a good one. They seemed prepared to shoot it but I didn't really notice any forced shots.

I think Simpson can be key to season if he continues to be outstanding foul shooter. That’s a weapon we really haven’t had since Myles Mack and Geoff Billett.

Noah when feeling it appears to be coming around.

Gavin was impactful. Even when his shot was off. Some dunks, steals and blocks. Shots will come.

Hyatt as noted a solid “quiet” game.

Best Cliff game of the year. Well done.

We were down by 7. Announcers Said Howard starting five all graduate students. An NCAA team last year. Nice win. Gavin didn’t back down to 8th year senior Towns.

Bryant beating FAU makes win better.

Doesn’t it feet like RU, BU, Bryant and Howard are playing a tournament? ADs friends? :-)

Difference though: Spencer didn't really drive to draw fouls and get to the line. That FT% was great but late in close games, having a PG that can drive and draw contact, then hit the FT, is a big help.
So true. And that’s a big difference. Spencer didn’t get to the line too often considering the minutes he played.

Nice summary. I love the depth of this team. Big difference from last year.

True - only 84 on the year. Even though that was 2nd on the team behind Omoruyi, that's not a difference-making number.

Single season FT% leaders in the last 25 full seasons (min 75 attempts):

.895 - Mack (2013-14)
.894 - Spencer (2022-23)
.882 - Mack (2012-13)
.864 - Carter (2012-13) (interestingly not in the media guide)
.858 - Mack (2014-15)
.847 - Douby (2005-06)
.839 - Rosario (2008-09)
.835 - Hodgson (1997-98)
.827 - Billet, T (1999-00)
.826 - Douby (2003-04)
.826 - Billet, G (1997-98)
.818 - Billet, G (1998-99)
.814 - Jones (1998-99)
.811 - Shields (2002-03)

Forgot how good Ricky Shields was.

Got to listen to the game on the drive back from Happy Valley and got to glance at a few highlight plays too (I was driving and my buddy had my phone as I have B1G+). Great win - seems like the team is gelling and playing much better, including both the guards and Cliff. So curious to see how we do against top competition.

Or games when you have the lead and need to close out. It’s so valuable to have your primary PG be the player to receive the ball in the trap to take the foul to stop the clock. Spencer isn’t a bad ball handler but Derek is much more reliable with a trap.

Couple of good stats from last night that show our change in style:

- 27 fast break points

- 23 points off turnovers

The first stat especially shows that we’re getting out and running at every opportunity (and watching the game certainly confirms this).

A much more enjoyable brand of basketball.

Everyone, who would you starters and closers be? Still too early to tell?

I would go with Noah, Simp, GG, NB Hyatt, Cliff. First off bench would be JaMike for Noah, Oskar for GG and Wolf for NB Hyatt. I would keep rotating that back and fourth unless other players proved worth in practice for it to switch. Eventually Mag will come back and take Oskar first sub spot after he adjust back.

As suspected , we are getting better every game. Let’s start with Gavin. His three shot is not going down yet , and I mean yet because soon we will see 5-5 splash threes, but finally he did all the other things he is capable of ; got out of the corner and drove to the basket and dished for assists ; drastic improvement in his defense and using his height for blocks ; stealing the ball and going coast to coast for the slam ( last game I said he has to defense rebound more and get it and go with no need to give it to a guard and he did that ); overall court awareness letting the game come to him with no forcing of shots ; pump fake in corner and drove beautifully for the slam( expect to see
more of this , reminds us of ACE highlights ) . Gavin can provide so much besides his shooting and his threat of shooting threes.

A few games ago I started a thread of not knowing what to make of this team . I said clearly the team will only get better if the guards improve , start finding Cliff, make some layups and easy open shots , go get rebounds ( steals work too) and go on fast breaks ). Well it has taken 2 games against Georgetown and Howard to see what this team is capable of. The guards all of them Derek, Noah , JMike have all come alive and showed their capabilities , making this team dangerous for anyone to play.

Derek was absolutely terrific , confident , decisive and showed just a glimpse or two of a player that can carry us when the rest of the team is having a bad shooting night or needs to get over the top. His defense has improved but his handle was tighter , effective , allowing him to get to his spots and knocking them down. He also splashed a few threes in rhythm. He drives hard and is getting fouled consistently . He was 18-18 at the line after making a few before he missed 2 of 3 when he got fouled at the three point line because Howard had too foul to stop him. However, he will be money at the line and in a close game he will be the one with the ball with the lead. Taking that huge leap from frosh to budding sophomore star. Watch out Big 10.

Noah and JMike also playing great defense and providing energy , passing , and Noah showing off his 3 point range and splashing them timely causing the opposing coach to call a timeout in the middle of a run. Noah and JMike have shown that they can get buckets in spurts and ignite our spurtability as a group. Huge huge winning trait for a team and we have the guards to do it.

Cliff and Wolf being as impactful on both ends with Cliff , his second straight monster stats but even more impactful a game. Dominant on the block when he got the ball from the guards but tremendous defensively. The stats say 4 blocks , but to me it looked like 10 as he seemed to swat every shot Howard took in a 5-6 minute stretch.

We are seeing the identity and speed and positive tempo this team is capable of playing with. Such such enjoyable brand of basketball and so easy to root for this team or watch this team if you are a diehard RU fan or just a college basketball fan. I am agreeing with Pike that this team plays offense and defense to be an 80’s scoring team and it happened tonight . It was high 60’s and 71 before that but that is with 10 or more missed foul shots a night , which unfortunately continued last night. Clean that up and continue our defense and great things are going to happen for this team.

This leads to soooo many more easy buckets which is crucial
