Rapid Reaction - Iowa

Goal is to maintain some dignity this season
so far...on the edge. Shameful given the past 3 seasons. His team. He owns it. Still don't see the value added he brings on prep, development, and discipline. He sold his defensive MO and got nothing in return. He has no big man clue or plan.

Sorry. I am not impressed by him as a coach. Man / yes. School ambassador yes. (screw it. I'll stop there).

Since no one really deserves to play, the benefit of the doubt has to go with players who we expect will be back next season. Noah can spell the guards for short periods and we need Cliff out there to provide some sort of competition. As terrible as Griffiths has been, he should get the majority of the minutes. We need to know who we have to play with the freshmen next year. I’m ok with giving it another week (we play an equally lazy Indiana team this week) but this season looks like it’s toast.

This year needs to be about finding legit dawgs that can help contribute and lead next year. There are no primary scorers on this team. They are coming in next year.
Hopefully the staff will figure out how to take advantage of what these players do well and not turn them into bricklayers who can't make layups.

People don’t want to hear it, but this has been the goal since the Wake game. Very very fortunate if we win 5 conference games this season. The talent and coaching gap is enormous right now. We’re also failing to develop our top recruits lately.

Simpson, Williams, Mag, Hyatt, Cliff. Let them run it. Jamike, Griffiths and Woolfolk first off. Coach is being too nice with his minutes distribution.

I was editing while you were replying.

DS isn't a point guard. We're asking him to play the two guard, but he's more of a combo player. JM is a better point guard than NF is, so you won't see hate there.

DS is a two guard, with higher expectations, especially as a sophomore. NF is struggling to both distribute and score. JD is better at distributing then scoring. DS needs to get better at scoring to fill that scoring guard role.
Virtually identical at distributing, and Simpson far better scoring. And not just better shooting, JMike foul shooting….
Still don’t see or understand the push for JMike and the disparagement of Simpson especially where we have seen Simpson win games for us, Indy, PSU and Stonehill and almost OSU. I give Simpson the keys to the car and let Williams play as other guard. JMike over Fernandes as first backup is perfectly fine IMHO. Only outlier is Noah did show up at SHU and OSU.
He’s only a sophomore and speed we haven’t seen since JY and before that I don’t know who, Mack maybe?

Williams has shown nothing from a distribution perspective, so that would put the entire burden on Simpson, which would limit his scoring. Give Davis 28 minutes and he will have 3+ assists/game, and a 3:1 ratio.

Williams has had one game in double digits, not sure why people are looking to hand him the keys at the 2.
Unfortunately we have not seen that play making ability at all. Yesterday was an audition to show off his playmaking skills and instead he threw up 12 shots, missing layups and dunks and ended up going 4-12. With 7 or 8 minutes more than Simpson, he only have one more assist. Some commentators said he played great and others said he’s earned more pt? How? Not yesterday at all. We want all want him to be the guy but so far hasn’t shown it. He does seem tough and plays good D. But then again so does Simpson.

My bigger worry is with the horrible foul shooting you will have to pull him end game. It’s one thing for a big man to be a poor foul shooter, it’s another for your point guard. That’s a strong argument for Fernandes. Announcer went on a three minute rant on his foul shooting…that’s not a good sign.

This season is over……work on developing the guys we need next year. Noah is utterly useless at this point, we’re not playing for the tourney this year, he’s not part of the equation next year……….he’s like the only straight guy at a party full of lesbians…..pointless. FIX GAVIN……..FIGURE IT OUT……..that would at least be a positive takeaway from this season.
No coach or player that has ever played Division 1 ball thinks the season is over. Time for the team to look in the mirror and everyone of them has to play much better than they have shown . They have a grow a set. This BIG 10 is the worst it has been in a decade. Every team has flaws except maybe Purdue . Time to get tough , rebound , drive hard , pass better and make some damn shots. You need momentum going into next year

I actually dont think that is the worst thing in the world…….the pointless part

No one's arguing about giving Simpson's minutes to Davis. It's giving Fernandes' minutes to Davis and Williams.

In order to get assists, you need players willing and able to score off of passes. You have one fewer of those with Fernandes on the floor. He either creates his own shot off the dribble, or doesn't shoot.

Gotcha. Some of comments suggested the contrary. Can’t play Simpson and Davis at same time as two small guards. Several suggested Davis and Williams. Many also suggested equal number of minutes for Davis and Simpson as well.
Really don’t have issues preparing for next year. It’s the idea that Davis played great, ran the point well or has earned or deserves more PT. That was a lot of the commentary. Certainly did not yesterday.

Since AW isn't playing 40 min a game, we will be playing a lot of minutes with two small guards. No real way around that - it was a big concern of mine in the off season that we didn't have any size on the perimeter.

Even if you play AW 30 min/g, that's still 25% of the time you'll be running with two small guards. Most likely AW will be closer to 25-28 min, which means about a third of the game with two small guards. Since JW isn't available, that's the nature of what we have on the roster right now.

I haven’t said much the last couple of games because this team is who I thought they were.

Love Pike, he has been the right guy for us and still very excited for next year, but he deserves a fair amount of criticism for this year.

Some comments on the game and this season:

-Fran McCaffery can beat Pike’s defense in his sleep. Iowa waits for us to overplay the ball, and then swings the ball to the open shooter. This has happened again and again over the past several years, and we never adjust and change our defense. Anyone who wants the blueprint on how to beat us show just watch game film of us against Iowa over the past several years.

-Pike did not have this team ready to play at the start off the season, every though we had several weeks of extra practice due to the overseas trip, and he doesn’t have the team ready to play at the start of games, as we consistently fall behind early behind awful shooting to start games. Hopefully Pike has learned his lesson about bringing in a bunch of players coming off of severe injuries and expecting much from them.

-Pike hasn’t adapted his offense to the players he has. Maybe next year with Dylan and Ace, everything will
be fine playing a lot of iso ball, because they can consistently beat people one on one, or even two on one. But this team does not have those capabilities. This year‘s team needs help getting some good looks. Right now teams are daring us to shoot from the outside and packing it in so we get nothing inside. Our shooters, Hyatt, Gavin, and Noah should be coming off screens to get better shots so teams have to play us all over the court to open up lanes to the basket and also create more opportunities in the paint.

What was the score of the home game vs. Iowa last year

Literally everyone knows this. It's easier said than done at the college level. But every single college coach in the world including Pike himself knows his defense can be beaten with that strategy and great execution. It's the tradeoff inherent in the defense. There doesn't actually exist a defense that can stop everything.
