RAPID REACTION - Iowa

They’ve been doing that silly inbounds pass to the backcourt a lot this season. Fran clearly saw it on tape and figured out how to exploit it
I don’t understand how you can’t not only inbound the ball but get a good look. Standing around three straight times is inexcusable and may have been the difference in this game. You can’t piss away opportunities.

24 combined points from Harper and Ace against defensively and athletically challenged Iowa just won't get it done
The lack of points was bad, but the lack of effort was worse from both of them. Low energy Dylan the whole game and Ace beaten on the defensive end a number of times by players who are nowhere near his talent level. It wasn’t about talent tonight, it was about effort and Iowa had way more than us on a night where our two best players looked like they played with minimal effort.

Team is done. Same issues every game and zero improvement all year so far. Horrific roster construction and a non functional offense (yet again). Just a disaster of a season. Coming off a disaster of a season. And heading into a likely another disaster of a season. But let's go build a statue...
Spot on comments except for building a statue.I prefer a refund to all season ticket holders.

Andy Katz was the sideline reporter on the telecast. He mentioned twice in the 2nd half that Pike was imploring the team during timeouts to play with energy, clapping and trying to energize them.

This team has no heart and no leadership.

And we still haven’t figured out how to defend Iowa’s motion offense after 9 years.
Probably never will at this point, assuming Iowa and Rutgers have same head coaches

But, but, but Pikiell is a defensive genius. Bull shit. He's a stubborn fool. Macaffrey made the adjustments in the second half by running his motion offense with high and low ball screens and cutting into the paint, and they killed us in the paint with their center and wings with easy layups. then when we collapsed on them, they kicked it out to Dix and Sanfort and knocked down open threes. Why Pikiell insists on playing man-to-man baffles me, especially when we're getting smoked out there.

I concur and strongly recommend implementing such a offense at Rutgers.

Now that I've had a few minutes to calm down, get this coaching staff out of my university. Can get a cheerleader who rolls the balls out and holds nobody accountable for a lot less than $4M per year.

Thanks for the good times, but it's over. Take the high road and negotiate a settlement with the school. He's obviously too stubborn to change up how he runs this program.
This was unacceptable tonight, everyone from Katz on the sideline, Hummel on the broadcast, to Pike himself on the bench talked about the lack of energy and effort. That falls on Pike, totally unacceptable and based upon the downward and disappointing arc of the program, it makes Pike fireable. I know it’s not happening in reality, but in a perfect world it should happen as the team did not listen and respond to him. Makes you then wonder if any messages are getting through to them this year.

The Pike era ended when all the old folks got in Hobbs ear to schedule Princeton and we let Princeton beat us on a neutral court. That game ended the hopes of the tourney and ergo the Pike era because no coach is coming back from missing the tourney with not one, but two NBA lottery picks.

This is why Rutgers struggles with donations because of the constant embarrassment they manage to get themselves into. We will be the butt of NBA jokes (not that anyone watches that league anymore) for 15 years.

Pike has 8 weeks to save his job because if we miss the dance next year he needs to be put out to pasture. Thanks for that one time in 10 years we made the tournament and won a game in it.

McCaffrey has been kicking Pike’s ass for a while now, not likely to change at this point. McCaffrey loves playing Rutgers.

You’re right about the jokes, I could picture watching inside the nba years from now and Charles Barkley saying “Rutgers had both Harper and Bailey and you’re telling me they didn’t win? Come on man, that’s turrr-uh-bull man, come on man”

I turned the page on this season at the final minute tonight.

However...Pike isn't going anywhere with no University President and no AD, and his generous buyout from Hobbs.

Even more scary, as bad as this season has been, next season has the making of an even worse one. Pikiell at least needs to upgrade his staff because there is zero coaching or accountability with this horribly disadvantaged roster.

Think we played our best basketball at the end of the first half with Hayes, Acuff, Martini out there.

It’s true, tonight’s loss angers me more than any other as we didn’t play with effort and gave less than 100% effort. We have lost games this year where we played hard but our defense, or rebounding cost us, or free throw shooting, or three point shooting, but tonight it was lack of effort that cost us this game, against a bad team as well.

Announcers summed it up in one sentence. “There is no leadership on this team.” There is no one to hold the younger guys and transfers accountable. Jwill is a net loss on the court and an absolute abomination when it comes to leadership ability.
You can tell that from watching the bench. Lack of energy
I brought it up in the in game thread. Jwill joking and laughing throughout was a harbinger of things to come. He continued that attitude throughout the season. His constant flopping around and attitude set the course for the young guns on the court.
Jwill does it every game all game. Just a kid having fun but you question the ability to lead. Sad
Big pike fan but tonight the inability to inbound under your basket 3 times. That is inexcusable and likely cost us the game. Losing faith rapidly and the failure to lock down on a rotation is another legitimate knock.
This has been Pikes kryptonite for years. We lack all inbounding ability. Bad coaching

Tonight, this is where I blame Pike

He should have benched Harper early in the 2nd nd half after that poor in bounds pass to JWill.

The last 10 minutes of the 1st half lineup had energy, enthusiasm and rhythm. Acuff was on fire when Harper wasn't on the floor, how does the staff not see that?

JMike had 10 points in 11 minutes, Sommerville 12 minutes and who knows why Grant was in the doghouse in the 2nd half. Dortsch got 4 minutes in the 1st half and then went on the side of a milk carton.

Yet Pike plays guys who definitely won't be here next year, Martini, Hayes and the lottery twins.

Then in 25/26 we will be subjected to 4 freshman and 300+ transfer portal players because this year frosh will have transfered out.

Yes, inbounding cost RU a trip to San Diego in ‘22
Then in ‘23 resulted in a loss to Minnesota & even getting bid..
& if the lineup was working so well at the end of the half, why switch it up for the start of the 2nd? .. It was at that point that I thought we would lose the game.

Weird night tonight.

First sign was PJ Hayes being first sub off bench.

Most glaring sign was first few minutes of 2nd half when we started lackadaisical and let Iowa back in the game.

On the MIA front : where was Dylan Grant in 2nd half ?

Iowa has 2 kids who can score and we could not stop it.

Got the impression that it was a chore for majority of crowd to be at the game - including myself !

Probably the same for coaching staff and players !

Was just terrible. 40-20 Iowa run after we were up 53-44. That should never happen. Did anyone notice that we build the 9 point halftime lead with DH/AB on the bench?
This is exactly what pissed me off tonight

Any other coach worth their salt would have recognized this early in the 2nd half and rectified it.

5 turnovers on inbound plays.

The play coming out of a timeout with 34ish sec left??

A pass to Dylan GRANT who was to feed a cutting Jwill for a foul line jumper?

So, Pike your play to get a bucket is having a freshman who you would not play for 15 games to be the trigger man . Grant a trigger man then passing to Jwill (I fall down too much) for the shot???

That’s your play in a 5 point game with 34 sec left?

Umm I think Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper are on your team and available to shoot.

There were so many coaching mistakes in just tonight’s game alone.

Nice guy bad big program coach.

Needs to go back to lower level basketball. Never will get a big time job now

lol basically no coach was ever being like “oh the team played well at the end of the half, let me just continue sitting the two players that are by far the best on my team”

Can you imagine the reaction on here if he did THAT and then we lost.

This board is ****ing nuts lol

Tonight we had no energy, but JWill always has energy, too much energy really and it’s not used constructively on the floor. I compare JWill leadership out on the floor to that of a schizophrenic on Meth while on an Easter Egg Hunt……JWill played well tonight but he is so far and away not a veteran leader or a team captain.

It looked like half the team has the flu!

I'll cut Dylan and Ace slack. I was at the game and they both clearly weren't fully recovered or well from their recent health issues.
agreed. it was clear they were nowhere near 100%... but we had no gameplan that considered that.

Here's teh thing.. The players knew they were not 100% and played like they were more decoys to pass the ball to others to make moves... but the other players did not play that way. They still looked like they were playing hot potato.. get rid of this ball thing. That led to clumsy and ugly turnovers.. for the second straight game.

If this was a one-off.. okay.. but it is not a one-off. We just saw this at Maryland and probably thought.. well, a road game at a ranked team.. okay.. move on.. next game. But come on.. this was piss poor.

Rutgers please hire a University President and AD already. Take all the NIL money and revenue sharing allocated to basketball and buy Pikell’s contract out. We can’t wait 2-3 years when we become a laughingstock and no quality candidate will want the HC job.

Agreed. Wonder how the ankle roll impacted Dylan’s mentality and caused some tentativeness. He never should have chucked up that 3 late. Even the broadcasters were critical of that decision.

I have no issue with that 3.. no one else was stepping up and, really, the game was kinda out of reach, momentum-wise. We should have called a timeout soon after that last inbounds turnover and just torn into the team... unacceptable.

Think of Izzo.. he loves his players of the court.. on the court he is demanding ecxcellence.. he can be both. He probably demands excellence in practice too. Team needs some tough love. Too late for this season.. but something must be done if you don't want this thing to spiral down even further making our good youth even more susceptible to recruitment. It may even be too late for that.. no NCAA? maybe I need to be elsewhere.

This has been Pikes kryptonite for years. We lack all inbounding ability. Bad coaching
I give Pike/Mulcahy/Harper a pass on that one inbounds vs.. umm.. I forget.. it was on the sideline at opponent's bench and the guy guarding the inbounds clearly was out of bounds to cut down the passing angle.. that should have been whistled then and there.. instead the 5-second count continued.

But, yeah, it is February and we don't seem to have a plan vs a press of any kind.

I think the idea was they couldn't press a healthy Harper.. it would cost them.

When we came out with JWill at point I was worried. I saw Harper take point for a very brief time but he is not himself. I still think the illness has a last effect on him in addition to the ankle. Same for Bailey.

I just feel bad for the whole team. They dug a deep hole.. was working hard to climb out while injured.. but they just seem to have lost the will to keep climbing.

I've never thought about that. Is it against a rule?

I've never thought about that. Is it against a rule?
Rule 7 regarding inbounds:

b. No opponent of the thrower-in shall have any part of the body over the inside plane of the boundary line.

PDF of rulebook

he cannot even stick a hand over the line.. nevermind actually jumping out of bounds to block a vew or throw

it should have been a technical foul for unsportsmanlike and not just stopping the play and give them another chance to properly defend it. Especially when you consider how a coach on the bench was leaning forward, waving his arm, etc.. to interfere as well. And players getting up and sitting down... official might have given us a different spot to inbounds from.. and Mulcahy and Pike could have complained to the refs about it even before it happened. Force thre refs to make a decision.. either ignore teh rule and infraction and give us a 5 second rule turnover or follow the rule and do something about the infraction.

It was Penn State.. I found the video.. check the tall white player looking to sit down but teh coach next to him puts his hand behind his back imploring him to go to the end of the bench... also.. during teh inbounds teh assistant closest to head coach leans far forward with a clipboard in his hand... all this while the defender jumps out of bounds after waving out of bounds, well over the line. The official has a clear view and does nothing... none of them do.. at a home game for Rutgers... that probably decides an NCAA bid or not. We win that game, barely.. and wind a 1st round B10 Tourney game and go on to NCAA First Four where ND beats us somehow.
