Ray rice on Wfan now

It seems like everyone unanimously agrees that he's washed up and has nothing left. I didnt' personally think that at the time. His production had gone down but he had battled injuries along with the Ravens kind of hitting a slump. Figured he would've had another shot by now, that just shows you that no one thinks he's worth the time. Which is upsetting.

what, is this 2006 Celebration Day (or should I say rub it in day)? First Gary on Mike and Mike and now Ray on B&C?

He played his last season with a torn quad.

A half dozen NFL teams lost their starting RBs to long term injuries. Several others (my Giants included) don't trot out anything special week to week.

If people in the league thought Ray could tote the rock, he'd be in pads, instead of on the radio.

Teams have proven they will take the media hit if you can perform. Nobody thinks Ray can perform at a level that is worth the bad PR.

And the Ravens' offensive line was putrid that year - all of the other RB's had similar declines in production. Look at the difference in production for their RB's that year:

Bernard Pierce
2012 Baltimore 16 108 532 4.9
2013 Baltimore 16 152 436 2.9

Ray Rice
2012 Baltimore 16 257 1143 4.4
2013 Baltimore 15 214 660 3.1

Vonta Leach
2012 Baltimore 16 9 32 3.6
2013 Baltimore 16 11 23 2.1

Total
2012 Baltimore 16 444 1901 4.3
2013 Baltimore 16 423 1328 3.1
Sacks given up
2012 Baltimore 16 33
2013 Baltimore 16 48

Why doesn't he go play in the CFL and show he still has the skills? Then an NFL team would take a chance on him because he has paid the price for the domestic violence incident, IMHO.

If Hardy is still on an NFL team RR would be if anyone thought he was good enough

It doesn't cost to work out a player to check them out. Rice doesn't even get the free looks. I have to believe the elevator situation is still key.

All Raven RBs stunk behind the horrible Raven line in 2013 (but Rice still had 58 receptions - around 6th best for RB in NFL). Rice was injured and 15 lbs overweight. In 2014 Rice was back to 205 lbs and coaches said he looked like his old self in camp. His burst was back. In only 2 preseason games he averaged 7.6 yards on 5 carries (with a long of 18 yds vs Dallas #1s). Rice was only a year removed from carrying Ravens to SB on his back with "Hey Diddle-Diddle Rice Up The Middle" scamper. I think without the video etc (and winning a 1.6 wrongful termination suit vs NFL) that Rice is at least getting free looks. But as Rice said he knows he messed up and he might end up in Canada. He said he's "ready to play in Antarctica in summer clothes"

I think all of the handlers of Ray, including his agent and lawyers have bungled this. I always believed for Ray to get back on the field in the NFL, he should have had his handlers make a big play for having his first year contract not paid to him but to a women's abuse fund. From a PR move this would have been huge for Ray and show the public that he's seriously contrite and will do what it takes to continue to turn his life around and assist others in making sure this kind of abuse will no longer be tolerated in the NFL.

I think if they had approached NFL teams with this (we don't know, maybe they did, but I doubt it) Ray would be getting his second chance. And if it only meant a few more years in the NFL for him, at least he would have built back his reputation.

Ravens took some losses on the OLine that year which impacted the running game.

In 2012, they had Oher, Yanda, Osemele, and Birk together through most of the season (62 of 64 possible games) and Reid/Harewood largely swapping at the other OT position before McKinnie took over for the playoffs and Super Bowl.

In 2013, they lost Birk to retirement at center, and Osemele only managed 7 games before going out injured. McKinnie's performance fell off a cliff and he was traded after 5 games, before ending the season as one of the worst OTs in the league. Reid never really recovered from the season ending foot injury from 2012. The guys who had the 80 regular season starts in 2012 only combined for 39 starts in 2013.

Thanks Spanky, Pierce had a bad year also. People do not mention that.

I'll say this every time the topic comes up. The NFL is cutthroat. There are a lot of terrible people on NFL rosters making a lot of money because they're elite at what they do.

Ray Rice is not elite at what he does any more. Maybe he could be a solid contributor. But in the end all it is is a cost benefit analysis. If the benefit of bringing Rice in (his production) is not clearly higher than the cost (bad PR), then he won't be signed. Clearly the marginal benefit of Ray Rice over other available running backs is not high enough to offset the cost, or he would be on a roster somewhere. Guaranteed.

Please answer this question then. If, as you claim its all about production and nothing to do with the media, why wouldn't someone bring him in for a tryout and give him a chance?

I don't need to prove what it isn't.

I can demonstrate what is.

Ray Lewis killed a guy with a blade and played 10+ more years.

Hardy beat the crap out of his g/f and is playing.

Pac Man Jones is playing.

Johnny Football is playing

The WR for Cleveland--the one who practically smoked spliffs in the huddle--played until the NFL finally banned him. How many chances he get?

If you can play and represent a good value, you will play. Period.

I find it hard to believe that Ray is black balled for hitting his wife, while almost no player in NFL history--short of being incarcerated--has been black balled for off field behavior--IF THEY COULD STILL PLAY.

VIDEO...that is why Ray Rice is not playing and why Mike Rice will have trouble. Doesn't matter how much they have reformed or apologized... Nothing cancels out the bad press that might come by hiring someone with video that can be trotted out as needed by critics and competitors.

The NFL doesn't have to recruit. If Ray Rice could run for 1600 yards and 15 TDs this year and help a team with the Super Bowl, he'd be on a roster. That team would let their critics and competitors trot out that video and they'd watch it polishing their rings.

Exactly.

Whether he CAN play or not is irrelevant.

Nobody THINKS he can play. That's all that matters.

Plus, he's an $870k player, plus any bonus, under the veteran minimum. His salary cap hit is even less.

Why wouldn't you sign him if you thought he could play? Under the +2 veteran rule, he's less than a $580k salary cap hit (assuming no signing bonus and he signs for the veteran minimum in year 1).

Let us not forget Donte Stallworth, who ran someone over from what I recall and then paid off the family.

Your opinion, and you are entitled to it. The video and potential backlash is preventing a tryout, thats mine. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
