lol, if Portland States CBs can cover we'll be fine, I say we win bigger next week than today

Easy buddy...easy does it...enjoy today and hope we can see an improvement in our young secondary.

WSU is going to be a tough game, they are much better than the team we played today.

Let's just hope we get the "sad and depressed" Wash St team instead of the "pissed off because we lost/almost lost to an FCS" Wash St team.

I'm still worried. Teams match up differently. I have no doubt our offense will roll. But I think they'll pick apart our secondary. We need to control the clock.

17-17 now in 4th Qtr.
WSU and 3-9 Portland State from Big Sky Conference .....

Was worried before knowing about a Leach offense but less so now after seeing they lost. Again though you never know what happens, matchups matter. Maybe they change qbs, who knows. Sometimes it's just not your day and sometimes it is too. The worry meter has definitely gone down a notch though.

Portland St. won 24-17. WSU's offense is not the high octane unstoppable machine they advertise. Yes it was raining but we're talking about a 3-9 FCS team last year. They rushed on WSU at will and controlled the clock. Played man to man defense, I have to believe our DB's are as athletic as Portland St.. WSU did have quite a few drops today maybe because of the weather. The QB was not sharp dare I say not as good as ours. He did get hurt but was throwing on the sideline. Backup freshman almost had two pass intercepted before the third was.(He's not good). We control the clock with our running game, don't play zone defense with 10 yd cushions, their wide recievers are not that good we win.

Anyone who saw our secondary play today who isn't worried about our secondary next week and for the rest of the year, needs to have his head examined. They were abysmal. I like our front 7 and I like how our offense looked (liked both Rettig and Laviano, as well as our line, despite some hiccups, mostly due to inexperience, I think), but the secondary could cost us at least a game or two.

I think a lot of people are concerned about our secondary. I said I think it's likely to be an uphill battle for them all year and hopefully the offense can pick up the slack. The front 7 can also help their cause as well if they can pressure the qb.

A few things of note reading the recap of that game.

1. The game was played in a driving rain storm. That could have slowed down the chuck and duck offense
2. Portland State ran all over WSU. 230 yards rushing. Good sign for us
3. Washington State's QB was injured and had to come out late in the game with an undisclosed injury

Our secondary will get better every week. I am not saying they will ever be "good" this season, but they will only get better.

Portland State went 3-9 last year. One of those wins was against Western Oregon who is Division 2. Wazzu is bad.

Will we win by 50 like today? Probably not. But a score like 49-21 isn't crazy.

If the adage "the biggest improvement is between game #1 and game #2" is correct, both teams should play better. I have to think the bad weather was definitely a negative for a team that is pretty much all pass like Wash. St.
Certainly, some good news for us is that we did win our game handily and we have two competent QB's which Wash. St. will have to prepare for instead of the usual one.
Our defensive line is going to have to really apply a lot of pressure to keep their passing under control.
Their inability to stop the run of a team that is certainly not nearly as good as our RB's, should really allow us to run the clock.
I have to say that when Norfolk St. just cruised down the field on their first possession for a TD through the air, I could only think about what may be waiting for us next week. I am cautiously optimistic now.

There was heavy rain today, certainly more of a factor for the passing atack. But if they cannot stop Portland State on the ground, our backs will be a big problem. Add in Carroo, Patton, and Grant, along with TE targets, and I think we put up a big number. Their special teams are not good. Block a kick or two. Big returns.

Avoid a bunch of quick strike TDs, make them drive the field, and we win comfortably in the 2nd half.
