If you watch ESPN, you get spoon fed UNC much of the year (except for the whole academic fraud thing).....I assume living in nearby Va. that is even worse. In that context, I could understand if he chooses UNC.....but if he goes Wisconsin, that would be rather stunning.
With a change of coaches comes decommits .
Every new HC ,including the Turtles HC, deserves a mulligan when trying to keep the previous HC's commits to stay committed.
Also shouldn't be judged on his recruiting ability until he has started recruiting for the next recruiting class and then judged by how he does.
I'll take Ash and staff over the Flood and a class of 4*s. No recruit leaving will change my opinion.

I would assume that its still a sexy brand for young people. That color is associated with them and pretty much no one else. People really don't seem to harp on the fraud story, at least a fraction of the way people harp on Sandusky.
You would have to think NC believes the sanctions will not be significant prospectively. Otherwise what could they be selling to these kids?

Chapel hill is an incredible college town, and amazing academics if he's actually interested in that. Just because they offered fake classes, doesn't mean Rene has to take them. He could genuinely be interested in academics
Other than its lack of institutional integrity, lack of athletic integrity, and lack of academic integrity, UNC is a terrific place.
As for the pending NCAA punishment, the Heels reckoning is near. Five Level One infractions as outlined in the Notice of Allegations including lack of institutional control, spanning two-decades, involving Men's BB, FB, and other athletic programs. Hundreds of fake "no show" classes, forged grade changes, etc. all resulting in keeping athletes eligible to play, while their competition was burdened by ethics, rules, class work, grades.
The NCAA went after UNC for Impermissible Benefits, mind you. Not Academic Fraud. Believe what you will. But all indications point to significant sanctions, vacated wins and retracted championships.

I'm honestly disappointed ash couldn't save this one. I don't have high expectations for this recruiting class but with the ohio state connection and him being a great defensive coach, I thought rene would've been easier to keep.

The latest UNC scandal "news" will break soon, involving a scheme to have incoming student-athletes advantageously being diagnosed as Learning Disabled/ADHD.
A Dookie has poured through a recent doc dump by UNC, resulting from a public records request. And the docs point to this whole new area of cheating at UNC.
In short, per @Bluedevilicious, the general population has an ADHD incidence of 4-5%, and athletes have an ADHD incidence rate of 8-10%. But UNC LD/ADHD incidence rate is 38% for FB, and was 61% for two consecutive FB/WBB classes.
These kids were also newly diagnosed as freshman at UNC, apparently not having been diagnosed prior to their enrollment.
Apparently, with this diagnosis comes certain "accommodations" such as unlimited time to complete assignments and tests, "take home" test provisions, and also certain prescribed meds that apparently are also classified as PEDs.
Expect to see some press on this, soon.

Honestly hope you're right about the hammer coming down on UNC, Pinehurst, since it would be refreshing to see the NCAA take one of the "name" schools and make it truly pay for cheating and dishonesty. (And also have the NCAA actually make a school found guilty of all the infractions mentioned have to endure the full punishment meted out and not simply throw out penalties as window dressing only to reduce them or rescind them later.)
And as far as Rene goes, at a place that's apparently committed the laundry list of infractions detailed above, it probably wouldn't cause the coaching staff in Chapel Hill any loss of sleep selling a recruit a bill of goods about there not being any serious sanctions pending. -But that's PR's problem now if, in fact, the 'Heels really do get whacked.

How can a "fine academic school" allow this nonsense to happen, for decades?
After six internal reviews and only after it was cornered does this "fine academic school" actually concede that it had, in fact, been allowing athletics to corrupt its academics, with academics as a willing participant?
And at no time did this "fine academic school" come forward with a self-imposed punishment or apologize for its cheating or make reparations to those schools it cheated out of victories, championships, and $.
And its FB and BB HCs continue to lie to recruits and their families, stating that their programs were not part of the scandal and that their programs are not in jeopardy as a result of the NCAA NOA.

I gave up wondering why a recruit would go to programs that were ready to be punished by the NCAA, already limited by sanctions ,and various other valid reasons recruits should find another program than the one they decide is right for them.
So it wouldn't surprise me if UNC is Patrice's choice and I hope he'll stay injury free while playing as a TarHeel if that's the program he plays for.
I will hope he'll earn his degree during his time at North Carolina , but other then those two things don't care if he's successful on the field or enjoys his time as a college S/A.

IMO thumbs down to the new staff on this one. Understood losing Russo but it seemed way too easy to pry this kid away. Your a defensive coach who recruited him at your previous school - you have to had a relationship with kid. He was the top kid in your existing class and he is gone weeks before NSD. Disappointing.
For what it's worth, when I see that someone wants to pursue engineering or is getting recruited by Ivies, that stands out as legit. Neither are applicable to this particular recruit, but it's worth mentioning.

No athletics-driven academic scandal occurred at UNC as reported in the Wainstein Report and in the SACS report and as outlined in the NCAA NOA. These findings are fiction, and the systematic two-plus decades of scandal did not happen.
Further, I am not a Rutgers grad but a plant by a bitter and resentful rival school of yours. Got it.
Oh really? On the academic front? Rutgers handled the situation right away and dealt with it by fining, suspending and ultimately firing Flood. All of the problems on the team were dismissed right away. Quite a huge difference. But, the self-loathing part of the fan base wants to drag us down to UNC's level. SMH.
