In any case, UNC is not a "garbage" school. It is on par academically with many state flagship universities.
What UNC is, is a very a profitable institution, and it has built a very profitable brand and public image that is misleading and belies a few underlying less-adulatory dynamics, due to a large part by championship athletics and the university's prioritization of athletics over substance and integrity including academic integrity. In the run up, academics have been compromised, to the point where the school is on ACADEMIC probation. Probation is a big damn deal.
But they do have a chance to right the flagship and regain credibility. And yet they continue obfuscate, deny, deflect, when they need to come clean, maybe. . . I don't know. . . offer up some sort of self-imposed sentence. But, no, they continue to drag out the inevitable NCAA punishment timeline, the latest by "self-discovering" and "self-reporting" some additional academic irregularities involving women's BB and soccer, or some such. What this has done is muddy the situation further and extend the NCAA punishment timeline (perhaps), effectively buying time in which men's BB is running toward the NCAA tourney, perhaps a NC, and FB's recruiting is unimpeded for another cycle.
